Films of the 1950s: 1952

Post by JimmyJazz »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is February 28th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1952:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/besto ... popup=true
http://www.imdb.com/year/1952/

And here is the top films of 1952 on TSPDT (edited in order to fit correct release dates): Please note that TSPDT may be updated this month, but this is the list as of February 1st 2014

1. Singin' in the Rain / Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly
2. Ikiru / Akira Kurosawa
3. Umberto D. / Vittorio De Sica
4. The Quiet Man / John Ford
5. The Life of Oharu / Kenji Mizoguchi

7. Limelight / Charles Chaplin
8. High Noon / Fred Zinnemann

11. Othello / Orson Welles
12. Forbidden Games / Rene Clement
13. The Golden Coach / Jean Renoir
14. Casque d'or / Jacques Becker
15. The Bad and the Beautiful / Vincente Minnelli

Also, to shed some light on a few hidden gems, here are the films from this year which were once featured on the TSPDT list, but are currently off of it:

- The Bend of the River /Anthony Mann
- Bienvenido Mister Marshall / Luis Garcia Berlanga
- Flavor of Green Tea over Rice / Yasujiro Ozu

That one is from 1954, isn't it?
Otherwise it would definitely have been on my list.

Sorry for the delay, everyone! I will discuss this below, but first, here is the Top 10 Films of 1952, as voted by our users!

1| Singin' in the Rain / Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly / USA / 550 pts. / 13 ballots
2| High Noon / Fred Zinneman / USA / 298 / 13
3| Ikiru / Akira Kurosawa / Japan / 291 / 12
4| Limelight / Charles Chaplin / USA / 181 / 10
5| Umberto D. / Vittorio De Sica / Italy / 154 / 9
6| The Quiet Man / John Ford / USA / 148 / 6
7| Life of Oharu / Kenji Mizoguchi / Japan / 99 / 5
8| Othello / Orson Welles / Various Countries / 91 / 4
9| The Bad and the Beautiful / Vincente Minnelli / 70 / 8
10| Moulin Rouge / John Huston / 46 / 3

Now, due to scheduling conflicts derived from my handling of the 1970s polls right now, I will pass on my pollster duties back to Petri. Because he doesn't always check these boards right away, I will PM him about this so that the 1953 thread can hopefully be started. After Zorg takes over from me when 75 comes up, I will probably resume my role in this poll. Sorry for the shakeup, guys.

Shouldn't "5 fingers" be 10th with 59 points (50 from me and 9 from Charlie Driggs) ?

OK I can count the points until Zorg takes over the 70s polls.
