MCCh 2014 (01) January 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2014 (update January 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating and the number of reviews (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

New Entry or Re Entry

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Ausralia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Jenesaispop; Laut; LesInrocks; Mondosonoro; Music-story; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Playgroundmag; Rip It Up; Sentire Ascoltare.
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405.

How did you determine the highlight songs?

I expected this question

There are some sites that (in addition to review) highlights some songs. I make a small ranking and put the three songs most valued.

That's awesome. The reason I asked is that this could then be the source for nominated to the AMF chart. However, as only one song (I think) will be nominated for the chart, would it be right to always take the first track that you have listed?

The albums in question for next week's chart are the ones from East India Youth, Stephen Malkmus, Actress and Broken Bells.

The problem is that there are often several songs tied.

In this case, I try to break the tie by reading the reviews of other websites. So I can know which songs are the most commented.

Now the three songs are in alphabetical order. I'll try to put them in order of "popularity". (coming soon)

Thanks! However, this is not really needed for other albums than the ones I mentioned. Don't spend too much time on it.

And away we go...

Looks like 2014 is off to a strong start. This time last year there were 4 albums with a score of 77 or higher - we've already got twice that number.

Thanks, Otisredding!

Love the list and the added songs, Otis! Thank you very much! :)

Just as a curious suggestion in attempting to scrounge more out of your efforts - I know listing the top 100 twice a month is a pointless effort. But, for us who use your list to look into new music, would it be too much effort to list the albums up to the 70,0 score, to get a few more albums as an 'Honorable Mentions' mark? You totally don't need to list songs, or even rank them, I just think it would be really interesting, haha.

With so much good music, it's a shame to leave some of it out, I think. But either way, your work is amazing! Looking forward to how it all shapes up ^_^

Awesome. So far the only albums I've found from this year are Thee Silver Mt Sion and Damien Jurado.

Brilliant! Haha. Thanks again, Otis. That'll tie me over plenty. As some have mentioned, this is definitely looking like a pleasant year so far. Looking forward to what comes ^_^

Thank you for this amazing work - love it!

This is not a criticism at all but I wondered why you do not use Q or Mojo for the UK ratings? They are the oldest (Q) and most respected (Mojo) monthly magazines in the UK and the only ones I read every month.

Thanks again

I'm really excited that this is back, Otisredding! Also a bit surprised that Roseanne Cash's "The River & the Thread" didn't make the cut, as I was expecting it to top the January list. I assume it fell short on the minimum number of reviews?

Indeed, Q, Uncut, Mojo are three prestigious music magazines (also here in Spain), but do not publish their reviews online...

And welcome to AM,

Roseanne Cash only has had five ratings (it takes seven). Maybe February 15 ...
