Phil shares some Anatolian rock, sadly not on Spotify in my region. The surprising thing was that when I went to YouTube for a link it marked the video as seen. I don’t remember it at all, nor what the context was for checking this out, but it looks like it was not for an earlier Biggest Fan.

Love me some Turkish rock! This gets a 9 from me. And here’s the inevitable Eurovision connection: these two would later become 2/3s of MFÖ, who represented Turkey in 1985 and 1988 with two certified bangers, “Asik Oldun” and “Sufi.”

Rock it may be, but it is also a groovy affair that puts mood over energy. Somehow incredibly pleasant to listen to.

We made it to #100! Only the power of love could have brought us this far, as Filbie knows well.
I’ll already present the results of the first 100 this weekend. Usually I wait a week longer to let people catch up, but I leave for the Cannes Film Festival coming Tuesday and don’t want to keep you all waiting for two more weeks.

100. Jennifer Rush – The Power of Love
Year: 1984
Album: Jennifer Rush
Biggest Fan: Filbie (#62)

A fittingly bombastic song to wrap up the first 100! Maybe I’m feeling sappy because I’m visiting my girlfriend for the weekend, but I’m ready to learn about “The Power of Love” and I give this a 9.

Thanks for all your hard work so far, Rob! It’s been fun actually keeping up with this game and I intend to keep doing so after your well-earned vacation to Cannes. Enjoy!

Jennifer Rush – The Power of Love: 5
I don't think I ever heard this version before, even though the original, but I heard Céline Dion's very faithful cover many, many times, thanks to my Céline-obsessed sister in the nineties and zeroes. It's been a while since I heard that one, so now this sappy song is basically a nostalghia piece for me that reminds me of Pokémon, which I was very much into when my sister played the Céline Dion version over and over and over (and over).
All this could not have been foreseen Jennifer Rush, but the fact is that thanks to my sister this song is both nostalgic and traumatic (my sisters obsession has created a lifelong antipathy of anything remotely Céline) that goes beyond my rating system. It would have helped if the two versions were more different. The fact is, this isn't my kind of song at the best of times, but compared to others of its ilk it isn't that awful either. Make of all this what you want. Or don't. Next!

Thanks Stevie, but although Cannes is a lot of fun, it's still work and no holiday. There's several meetings to attend and way too many films to watch for professional reasons.
However, in contrast to last year I will not put the game on hiatus during Cannes. Last year during both Cannes, Venice and my holiday I thought the pace was interrupted to frequently, so I decided to no longer do it that way. Especially since a third film festival (Bologna) will be attented by me this Summer (it truly is film festival summer for me this year). I just hope I don't forget to post, but if all goes well there will be no interruptions. Not even during my actual holiday.

Listening to the songs of the game again, I've come to think that sometimes I've been too generous. So I've downgraded some of the songs I didn't like that much this second time around. Except for one song that has been upgraded to a 10/10.
The songs with a change of rating were:
5. Tangerine Dream – Sequent C (1974) 6/10
6. Leonard Cohen – You Got Me Singing (2014) 7/10
8. Blancmange – Living on the Ceiling (1982) 5/10
15. Johann Sebastian Bach - Matthaüspassion, BWV 244 / Zweiter Teil: No. 39 "Erbarme Dich" (1727) 10/10
31. Bad Bunny, Jowell & Randy and Ñengo Flow - Safaera (2020) 4/10
34. Jockstrap – 50/50 (2021) 4/10
44. Sigúr Ros – Untitled #6 - E-Bow (2002) 8/10
54. Andrew Lloyd Webber – Think of Me (1987) 4/10
56. Foxes – Let Go For Tonight (2014) 5/10
58. The Boo Radleys – Reaching Out From Here (1995) 7/10
62. Run-D.M.C. – It's Like That (1983) 7/10
65. Igor Wakhévitch – Materia-prima (1971) 8/10
78. Run the Jewels featuring Prince Paul as Chest Rockwell – Twin Hype Back (2013) 6/10
80. Al Green – Call Me (Come Back Home) (1973) 7/10
87. Paulinho da Viola – Nada de novo (1970) 8/10

Yes, I know I've only voted for the 1st and 100th song. I'll try to keep up with 101-200.

Have a great trip to Cannes, Rob!

"Little Girls" is a 7/10 on first listen and a possible grower. We love the quirkiness and the steady changes in the metre. Everything is constructed so as to accentuate the satire of the lyrics, which should clearly not be taken at face value.

"Gone, Gone / Thank You" is an 8/10 on first listen. Never gets boring with all the different parts.

"Adımız Miskindir Bizim" is another 8/10 on first listen. A little monotonous for the length, especially right after the Tyler. But the bass track. And the instrumentation. Somewhat reminiscent of Love's "Forever Changes".

"The Power of Love" is a 4/10 on first listen. Too bombastic for our tastes and the song as written is not a complete winner either. Too long, too, which is why it started to grate us a little towards the end.

"Time Waits for No One" gets elevated to a 5/10 on second listen. MJ has done worse.

"Corcovado" stays a 7/10 on next listen. A pleasant and competent composition pleasantly and competently executed. Jobim's short piano solo stays the highlight.

"rockstar" is even more boring on second listen and gets downgraded to a 3/10.

"Twin Hype Back" stays a 7/10 on second listen.

"Fuck Your Ethnicity" stays a 7/10 on second listen. Kendrick's flow is incredible but otherwise it doesn't hook us as other tracks of his do.

"Kiedy powiem sobie dość" stays a 6/10 on second listen. Rather run-of-the-mill alternative pop-rock. Not unpleasant but uninteresting.

"Ride on Time" gets downgraded to a 4/10 on second listen. We are still very indifferent to it but six minutes is just too much time to be spent on indifference.

"April Come She Will" remains rather lackluster for somebody who'd become such an incredible songwriter. 6/10 and nothing else to it.

It's a shame cause we still just love the percussion but "Nada de Novo" gets downgraded to a 5/10 on second listen. Too sugary for our tastes. Sounds like adult contemporary bossa nova compared to the Corcovado real thing.

"Club Mekon" stays a 6/10 on second listen. A good 6 but a 6 nonetheless. There's something lacking to elevate it above mildly pleasant.

"September Song" gets elevated to a 5/10 on next listen. The tune is alright. Nothing to hate at least.

"21st Century Pop Song" gets elevated to a 9/10 on second listen. Maybe we were just not in the right mood for it the first time round but this is awesome.

"Cumbia sampuesana" made for a second very fun 7/10 listen.

"Fall Down" stays a 7/10 on second listen. Still reminds us more of '80s heartland rock than of '90s alt but a good song nonetheless.

"Triangle Walks" stays a 7/10 on second listen with nothing new to add.

"Two Worlds" would get a downgrade if it hadn't been a 1/10 the first time round. It is still torture to us from beginning to end. At least it goes to prove that we still have enough control over ourselves that we somehow managed to neither turn this off before the end nor smash our heads into the speakers.

"Weapons of War" gets downgraded to a 4/10 on second listen. Rather boring alt-rock. Last time we were probably just so relieved Xandria had ended that we rated it too highly.

We love "Little Girls", it makes us feel so good. Stays a 7/10 on second listen.

"Gone, Gone / Thank You" stays an 8/10 on second listen. Captivating from beginning to end.

"Adımız Miskindir Bizim" stays an 8/10 on second listen. The instrumental breaks in the middle and at the end provide a nice change of pace against the slightly monotonous sections with vocals.

"The Power of Love" is too much phoniness for us to take. Her vocals are so over the top from the first time she opens her mouth that the arrangement can't do anything but blow the entire thing out of the window. Stays a 4/10 as the melodic hooks are good enough.
