Yes, just in the middle of a poll maelstrom here it come the combined 50s and 60s poll, after the excellent 90s, 80s and 70s yearly polls (hey, Nassim, Stephan and Henrik, I just hope to be able to match up your great work). The rules will be similar to those previous polls but with some variations. This time we are going to chose:
- The 50 best albums of the 50s (5 albums per year).
- The 100 best albums of the 60s (5 albums per year from 1960 to 1964 and 15 albums per year from 1965 to 1969).
- The 100 best songs of the first half of the XX Century (an “open” poll of songs released from 1900 to 1949). With “open” I mean that you can post your votes on the thread or send it by mail, just like the songs poll that Jonathon is running right now.
- The 100 best songs of the 50s (10 songs per year).
- The 100 best songs of the 60s (10 songs per year).
The schedule of the poll will be:
- January: 1950, 1951, 1952 (5 albums and 10 songs per year).
- February: 1953, 1954, 1955 (5 albums and 10 songs per year).
- March: 1956, 1957, 1958 (5 albums and 10 songs per year).
- April: 1959, 1960, 1961 (5 albums and 10 songs per year).
- May: 1962, 1963, 1964 (5 albums and 10 songs per year).
- June: 1965 (15 albums and 10 songs per year).
- July: 1966 (15 albums and 10 songs per year).
- August: 1967 (15 albums and 10 songs per year).
- September: 1968 (15 albums and 10 songs per year).
- October: 1969 (15 albums and 10 songs per year).
- November: 1900-1949 (top 100 songs) and 1950s (top 50 albums and top 100 songs).
- December: 1960s (top 100 albums and top 100 songs).
I’m aware that this poll (specially the first months) will have less participation than previous polls (and of course than the “complete” 00s poll that will take place during 2011) but I would encourage all of you to listen to some of the wonderful music released during the 50s and the 60s and come up with some votes.
Your lists will need to include at least 5 albums/songs. Ranked lists are preferred. However you can also post unranked lists, in this case every album/song will get an average score of 10 points. The scoring of the ranked list is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1
During the first months you can choose to make separate lists for every year or an only list for the three-year period (the latter will be my personal option). I will create a separate sheet of the Excel file for every year so I will count anyway the first 20. In the second option it’s preferred to specify the year of release but it’s not mandatory.
One last thing: I think we should not be strict about the criteria of “compilation” during the first years of the 50s. The 10” long-play album was new then and most of the albums were collections of songs simultaneously (or previously) released in 78 RPM singles. If you look to my first list my #1 album (“Masterpieces by Ellington”) is really an LP (songs newly recorded by the artist seizing the opportunity of releasing longer songs with the new format) but my #2 (“Moanin’ the Blues”) is more a compilation of previous singles “Singles Going Steady” style. So probably we should consider proper album and not compilations the 10” or 12” long-play albums including songs by the same artist not previously released in LP format even if the songs were released as singles during a 2 years period prior to the album release. So for instance Johnson’s “King of the Delta Blues Players” compiles material from many years ago and Smith’s “Anthology of American Folk Music” compiles songs by different artists. But we still have problems with these criteria: Davis’ “Birth of the Cool” compiled songs released 4 or 5 years before but included some previously unreleased songs (to my knowledge) and all the songs included in Monk’s “Genius of Modern Music” were previously released as a singles in a period of 2-3 years prior to the album release (the singles were released in 1948 and 1949 and the album in 1951). Acclaimed Music list these albums as official while Rate Your Music as compilations. My opinion is that we should consider it as official albums not only because of its classic status but because it was the first release of these songs in LP format. And mainly because we wouldn’t have enough albums to vote if we exclude them.
Enjoy it…
