✅ Reclam's Basis-Diskotheken "Rock und Pop" und "Jazz"

Post by DDD troll account »

Two of German publishing company Reclam's music guides. The "Rock und Pop" one is already included in the rankings here albeit in an older edition. Both lists are unranked and obviously somewhat genre-specific but as they were published in book form and not a magazine I guess they count? Anyway here they are:

Some more jazz lists are always nice. No Nina, however! Henrik was right: jazz critics always ignore her as well! All of the most important acts are here, but it is unfortunate that Louis Armstrong won't have this counted to his score on the artist list. If there is 1 major artist that I feel is vastly neglected on the list, it is probably him, and part of the problem is that most jazz lists represent him via the Hot Fives and Sevens comp album. I understand Henrik's reasoning for not factoring in comps: I get irritated just as much as the next guy by the likes of RS, TIME, and EW representing certain acts by "Greatest Hits" albums, thereby fudging the rules and including collections as opposed to individual artistic pieces. But some artists, particularly jazz greats like Armstrong and Bird, get neglected in the process.

Well, to be fair Nine Simone is borderline jazz at best. Her output even on individual albums was far too diverse to really do her justice by placing her under whatever moniker. Obviously that also means that she'll usually be excluded from genre-specific lists, which is the curse of her genius.

And yes, obviously pre album era artists have rather bad chances on album lists. Even if compilation albums were included many of them wouldn't get an entry onto the 3,000 due to the vast amount of different compilation albums that are released. In Armstrong's case it might make sense to include "The Complete Hot Fives and Sevens" since they probably appear fairly often. Some compilation albums are even included on the site like "The Three E.P.'s" or "13 Songs" and according to Henrik's Q&A's section indeed only "Greatest Hits"/"Best of" albums are excluded, which TCH5a7s technically isn't but I also understand Henrik's reasoning for generally excluding albums that compile material from a completely different era. "The Complete Hot Fives and Sevens" would like mighty weird in a list of the greatest albums from the 2000s.

That is true about Nina. I've just personally always considered her to be broadly "jazz", but she was so multi-talented that, like you and Henrik have said, her own genius is her curse. As for the "Hot Fives...", I could see both arguments for and against its inclusion. It would probably represent him better on the AM list, giving him a fairer chance against other singles and albums acts. On the other hand, including such a collection in the 2000s list, up against the likes of Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem would be quite confusing, and probably not fair to either artists, since they would be competing with an act, and music, that is from a completely different era and style.
