GritaRadio - Las 200 Rolas del Rock Mexicano

Post by Blanco »

In 2010, we celebrated the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence. The celebrations included all kind of areas, including, of course, music.

From 6 to 24 of September of that year, GritaRadio published and transmitted a list that was produced by Hugo 'Hugokoatl'. Being produced by a person outside the radio station gave the advantage that the list could be transmitted to other radio stations, which are:
In addition to GritaRadio, (broken link, new one: http://gritaradio.com)
Com.Única Radio
Rock and Radio
Vive Más Radio
and Radio Alternativa
(all of these according to this site.)

"Two hundred years after the War of Independence began, two hundred years that are grouped into a named Bicentennial celebration. And if you celebrate it, celebrate Two hundred Mexican rock songs.
GritaRadio is painted green, white and red to introduce a selection of two hundred National Rock songs. Your patriotic vein that does not jump to other things, will jump when the adrenaline invade your blood.
Every day from September 6, and until September 24, at nine in the evening, you will know the songs that make this list, which are part of what we call Mexican rock."

Does this mean it's a single person's list?

The short answer would be yes.
The long answer is:
Although the list was compiled by one critic, his work was mainly compiling, rather than choosing the songs (though he did write an article for each song). He based his information on other sources such as the book "Guaraches de ante azul" (blue suede guaraches) by Federico Arana, and the book "Ahí la llevamos cantinfleando" by Merced Belén Cruz. In addition to publications such as "Rock and Blog" by the newspaper El Universal (The largest newspaper in the country), and radio stations as Interferencia 7diez, Reactor, Ibero, and Órbita 105.7fm.

The critic who compiled the list is called Hugo Galván. After studying Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at UNAM, he worked in the newspaper El Universal. (The same I quoted earlier). He was part of the entertainment section, where he interviewed musicians and singers mainly. He has also been radio announcer and writer for GritaRadio. He also writes reviews for albums each week for online and print publications. He has also published a few things, like this book about Mexican rock and their popularity on the radio, plus he currently writes a documentary about Avándaro Festival (The equivalent of Woodstock in Mexico), and its subsequent influence on contemporary music festivals.

And well, the list was published in different radio stations (Those I mentioned earlier, in the first post). Though I suppose that unlike those lists created by other media which only mention that were created by critics but did not mention who, on this occasion they did say who compiled the list. Although from my point of view, they do not give a lot of credit either. Hugo is barely mentioned as the producer of the list.

Is it possible to find information how these songs were selected? Were they the most mentioned in these books etc.?

"LED y reProducciones Iconoclasta se han dado a la tarea de rascar hasta en lo más recondito del rock nacional para agrupar sólo a las 200 rolas que mejor representan el mestizaje del rock con la sonoridad mexicana. Con esto podemos levantar el cuello y decir que el rock mexicano orgullosamente se ha trepado al ferrocarril de las celebraciones del bicentenario y del centenario."

Translation:

LED and Reducciones Iconoclasta have taken on the task of scratching the deepest recesses of national rock to group only the 200 songs that best represent the miscegenation of rock with Mexican sonority. With this we can raise our necks and say that Mexican rock has proudly climbed the railroad of the bicentennial and centennial celebrations.

I think Hugo Galvan have enough credits to be considered a important music critic of Mexico. I hope his list be reconsidered.
