Stephan, could you please replace the Youtube clip of Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso (bracket 1, song 2) by the mp3 file I gave you ?

Or this clip? Thanks in advance

I'm definitely reluctant about youtube vids because of the poor sound quality and loading problems.

@Honorio : The Spotify version is shortened to half its length. I leave it to you to publish it or not. Maybe for those who can't stand 14 minutes of musical ecstasy

Bracket 3.2.5
Anoushka Shankar - Inside Me
Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso
The Anoushka song is lovely, but Nusrat is impeccable and truly on fire in this song. He goes on a little long, but when the song is this good that's not really an issue.

Bracket 3.2.6
Ravi Shankar - Improvisation on the Theme of 'Rokudan'
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Tery Bina
This time Nusrat has the shorter song, but again it's the longer song that leaves the biggest impression.

Bracket 3.2.7
Ananda Shankar - Dancing Drums
Ahmad Zamir - Khuda bowad yaret
Not a big fan of Ahmad, Ananda is much, much better. It might be the best song this week. Gonna really have to check out Ananda Shankar and His Music.

Bracket 3.2.8
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Ganj-e-Shakar (part 1)
Farida Khanun - Aaj jane ki zid na karo
Wow, Khanun is really something else. I'm still taking it in, but it's pretty clear to me already that it's the better song. Had it been up against Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso it would've been a little harder to decide.

The Spotify playlist, only lacking the Ahmad Zamir song and (as nicolas pointed) with an edited version of Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso.

Wow, this week looks like a duel! Nusrat vs. the Shankars...

Bracket 2.3.5
Anoushka Shankar - Inside Me (India, 2011)
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso (Pakistan, 1992?)
Very nice sample of flamenco-rāga by Anoushka Shankar, a fusion more natural that one can think (it's supposed that gypsies got their remote roots in India) but it's a path that not many travelled before. The only problem is that there is a much better example (in my opinion) in Camarón's 1979 song Nana del caballo grande. So my vote goes to Nusrat and these gorgeous 14 minutes (yes, nicolas, I can dig it, my own nomination is even longer, "Ganj-e-Shakar" last for 22 minutes!).

Bracket 2.3.6
Ravi Shankar - Improvisation on the Theme of 'Rokudan' (India, 1978)
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Nothing Without You (Tery Bina) (Pakistan, 1990)
Another example of fusion of different roots music, this time with Anoushka's father trying his luck with Japanese music in an album aptly called "East Greets East" (previously he released some albums with Yehudi Menuhin called "West Meets East"). The trance-like properties of both Indian and Japanese traditional music makes this fusion sound so natural. "Tery Bina" is fantastic though.

Bracket 2.3.7
Ananda Shankar - Dancing Drums (India, 1975)
Ahmad Zamir - Khudaa bowad Yaaret (Afghanistan, 1973)
Since probably Ananda Shankar will win easily this bracket I'm going to vote for the warm voice of this artist from Afghanistan nominated by Mindrocker.

Bracket 2.3.8
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Ganj-e-Shakar (Pakistan, 1994)
Farida Khanun - Aaj jane ki zid na karo (Pakistan, 1978?)
My two nominations... I like both but I'm going to chose Nusrat's song because of family reasons. Let me explain it. My two brothers (Jesús and Miguel) teamed some years ago with Alain Mauviel, a French sax player, in a project called El Trib Real (The Royal Trip). They recorded an (excellent) instrumental demo in 1997-1998 that was never oficially released. The CD-R included a cover of "Ganj-e-Shakar" that it was called Tangos of Ganj-e-Shakar. Well, it was not really a cover, most of the melodic lines (like the bass line on the intro or the horn-sounding synths on the second section) were original melodies composed by my brother Jesús. In fact the only melody taken directly from Nusrat's song is the one that sounds from 1:23 to 1:31 (you can listen to it in Nusrat's original just in the beginning played by the harmonium). So Nusrat served basically as inspiration and not as a direct source, I can listen also echoes of flamenco, free-jazz and even Zappa's "Peaches in Regalia" (am I right, Jesús?). But that was only a demo, my brother Jesús is planning to include a reworking of this song for the fourth album by Gent del Desert. The new version will feature Balkan sounds courtesy of folk band La Trocamba Matanusca, sounds coming from demonstrations of the Arab Spring and lyrics taken from a poem by Anselm Turmeda, a Franciscan monk of the XV Century that got converted to Islam, a poem about the money's corruptive power (a highly topical subject especially nowadays).

Anoushka Shankar - Inside Me 4
Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso 4.25
Inside Me was a grower, but my own Nusrat pick wins. This is how I like him. Improvising for 14 minutes with his choir. This is Nusrat when he performed as lead vocalist along with his cousin Mujahid Ali khan as second voice.

Bracket 3.2.6
Ravi Shankar - Improvisation on the Theme of 'Rokudan' 4.25
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Tery Bina 4.25
This flute/sitar duo is amazing. But it's competin against my second favorite Nusrat song, IMO the best "Westerniezd" song he recorded.

Bracket 3.2.7
Ananda Shankar - Dancing Drums 4
Ahmad Zamir - Khuda bowad yaret 4
Both songs are good and different, but as we've alreafy qualified another Ananada S song, I'm gonna go with Ahmad Zamir's lament (with a gypsy flavor)

Bracket 3.2.8
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Ganj-e-Shakar (part 1) 4
Farida Khanun - Aaj jane ki zid na karo 4

Same here, both good songs but I'm gonna go with Farida Khanun's sweet voice

Bracket 3.2.5
Anoushka Shankar - Inside Me
Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso

Both good but not great IMO. Pass.

Bracket 3.2.6
Ravi Shankar - Improvisation on the Theme of 'Rokudan'
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Tery Bina

Beautiful. This Ravi Shankar piece suited my ears much better than the '56 recording last week.

Bracket 3.2.7
Ananda Shankar - Dancing Drums
Ahmad Zamir - Khuda bowad yaret

Ananda Shankar's music is so cool, but Ahmad Zamir's song and performance was really touching. Fantastic matchup.

Bracket 3.2.8
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Ganj-e-Shakar (part 1)
Farida Khanun - Aaj jane ki zid na karo

I'm listening to these songs for the first time tonight and it's impossible to decide. Pass again.

Anoushka Shankar - Inside Me 7
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Na Ruk Te Hai Aanso 6

Ravi Shankar - Improvisation On The Theme Of Rokudan 6
Husrat Fateh Ali Khan - Nothing Without You 6

Ananda Shankar - Dancing Drums 9
Armad Zahir - Khuda Bowad Yaret 9

On Dancing Drums I love the mix of the Western beat and synths with the Eastern melody, but Khuda Bowad Yaret edges it out with a more vocally talented performance.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Kkahn - Ganj e Shakar 8
Farida Kahnun - Aaj Jane ki zid no karo 7
