Best Music Videos Poll (deadline end of Oct. 31 UTC)

Post by Live in Phoenix »

List your favorite music videos, whatever you think of as a video (broadest definition: a full, singular musical piece plus visuals), from music films to present day YouTube. jamieW will tabulate up to 100 videos (minimum 15) per forum member, using the formula of 100/(rank + 2). The deadline is the end of October 31st, UTC time. Rollout is scheduled for December.

If there is more than one version of a video, please list the version. Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" and U2's "One" come to mind here. Different versions mentioned here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9057&p=128252#p128252
(An exception is if most people only know of one version, which you're voting for as well.) It isn't mandatory to list directors, or something like "uncensored version" or "long version." There will also be a very basic rollout for a stricter, MTV-type definition of music videos or "promo films" from 1965 to the present day. (10/10 update: There will only be 1 rollout at our current rate; virtually everything posted here has been a conventional music video.)

Ok, so if Kate Bush is in a white dress during Wuthering Heights, then that should be version 1.

It looks like there are 4(!) videos for Relax. I assume you voted for the 1st version (what I might call the Roman emperor version).
The first official video for "Relax", directed by Bernard Rose and set in an S&M themed gay nightclub, featuring the bandmembers accosted by buff leathermen, a glamorous drag queen, and an obese admirer dressed up as a Roman emperor, was allegedly banned by MTV and the BBC,

prompting the recording of a second video, directed by Godley and Creme in early 1984, featuring the group performing with the help of laser beams. However, after the second video was made the song was banned completely by the BBC, meaning that neither video was ever broadcast on any BBC music programmes.

A live performance video of the song was directed by David Mallet, making the rounds at MTV.

Another MTV video of the studio version includes footage from the Brian De Palma film Body Double. Body Double, a popular 1984 erotic thriller film, contains a film within a film sequence in which Frankie Goes to Hollywood performs Relax on the set of a porn film.
=====================================================

By the way, no one's voted yet for U2's "One," but there are 3 versions:
Three music videos were created for "One". The first, directed by Anton Corbijn, was filmed in Berlin and features the band members performing at Hansa Studios interspersed with footage of Trabants (an East German automobile they became fond of as a symbol for a changing Europe) and shots of them dressed in drag. Bono explained that the idea to crossdress "had been based on the idea that if U2 can't do this, we've got to do it!", and it was fostered by the group's experiences dressing in drag for the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. However, the band pulled the video, fearing the single's status as an AIDS benefit would result in critics finding AIDS-related interpretations of the video. The Edge explained, "We didn't want to be involved in putting back the AIDS issue into the realm of sexuality... It wasn't worth the risk of people imagining we were saying something about the AIDS issue through the drag footage, which was totally not what we were trying to say."

The second video was directed by Mark Pellington. It comprises images of blooming flowers, the title word in several languages, and slow-motion footage of buffaloes running, leading up to Wojnarowicz's "Falling Buffalo" photograph. Much like for the first video, the band did not believe Pellington's video would be good for promoting the single.

The group filmed a third video in an attempt to appeal to a broader audience. It was directed by Rattle and Hum director Phil Joanou and edited by Glenn Lazzaro and was primarily filmed in early March 1992 at Nell's, a Manhattan nightclub. The video depicts Bono sitting at a table smoking a cheroot and drinking beer, interspersed with footage of the band performing in concert. While Bono was filmed, the rest of the band, along with models and transvestites, attended a party in the basement, awaiting their turns to be filmed. However, they were never called to the set and by 3 a.m., they realised that the video was to focus on Bono.

I'm not tabulating, but I'm trying to not be caught totally flat-footed either. So far there are already approx. 77 videos with at least two votes (counting my work-in-progress list).

whuntva and Wezzo, are you both voting for the U.S. "burlesque" version, then?
There are two videos for this song: the first version (also known as the UK version) was filmed in Staten Island, New York, and was directed by Brad and Brian Palmer under their studio Surround.

Later on in the year the label decided to create a more mainstream video for the US market: the second video (also known as the US version) was filmed in Los Angeles, California. Directed by Sophie Muller, the video stars Flowers, Izabella Miko, and Eric Roberts in a love triangle, occurring within the context of a burlesque show.

Since everyone has been making conventional choices so far, I’m inclined to weasel out of making 2 rollouts, since any unorthodox choices will likely make up a tiny portion of submissions at best.

Thanks for sorting out the multiple versions, Live in Phoenix. Once I start entering data, I will post any questions I have in this thread for those who haven't specified a version where multiple options are available.

#41 on the List should be "Perfect Drug" instead.

And yes, you are correct for both "Version 2" selections. I wanted the more "elaborate" versions of both videos.

The golden age of music videos was the eighties until early noughties, when cable TV was hugely popular and people zapped to music channels during commercial breaks or boring moments. Everything had to be fast and glimming. A pop star had to be a good dancer and telegenic. This shallow but enticing culture collapsed when MTV made the dreadful decision to switch from music videos to reality soaps, and younger audiences turned from television to the internet. After that there were still a lot of good videos, but they're not on television anymore. The colums stand for Artist, Title, Video Release Year and Director.

Yes, would it have killed them to make a couple of hours of prime-time appointment viewing every weekday -- one night, it could be the top 10 hottest songs in the country, what with how they used to do countdowns; another night, the hottest rock songs; another night, a different genre; another night, a music video spotlight on a popular artist.

(And this is off the top of my head at 6 in the morning when I'm not even awake enough yet to remember that I'd already warmed up my tea.)

Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice
Madonna – Express Yourself
Madonna – Like a Prayer
Sinéad O'Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U
Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight

There are other videos that I forgot like Galvanize from "Chemical Brothers", "sweetest thing" from U2 and mainly the Björk clip that she dates a cat (I don't know how I went to forget this masterpiece)

I'll probably be posting my list sometime close to the end. (What else is new?) But I do already know what my #1 will be (and it's one off the grid a bit). New Order's "The Perfect Kiss" was directed by Jonathan Demme, about a half-decade before "The Silence of the Lambs." For me, this is the perfect illustration of the joy I get from music:

Hello Live in Phoenix, I've made some changes to my list. I've added Rabbit in Your Headlights, Don't Look Back in Anger, and Debonair, while I've removed Liberation, Never Let Me Down Again, and Crazy.

I probably won't begin tabulating the lists until the last week of October, since I know a lot of people will want to make changes. Once I begin, I'll still allow changes right up until I'm finished, but I'll then probably ask everyone to let me know if they do make any.

I've been working on director info. I have found or confirmed a director for every video except the ones below. (One of them is today's Biggest Fan selection.) A couple of these surprised me. Some of these I just don't expect to be figured out. For instance, after inquiring at a Carpenters forum, I now know everything under the sun regarding the "Superstar" video, except who directed it. Anyway, if you know the director for any of these, please let me know.

Carpenters – Superstar
If you'd enjoy reading my Carpenters thread:
https://forum.amcorner.com/threads/dire ... deo.17684/

Civil Twilight - Fire Escape

Codeine Velvet Club | Hollywood

Jimmy Fallon (as Neil Young) – Pants on the Ground

Luke feat. JT Money and Clayvoisie – Cowards in Compton

Mac DeMarco - Chamber of Reflection

Ratt – Round and Round

Replacements - Bastards of Young
--This is an "anti-video," but has shown up on best-of lists over the years, so this one is frustrating

South Central Cartel feat. 3-2 & Big Mike – Gang Stories
--This is from my list, and it's probably not surviving the next revision anyway

Steps | Say You'll Be Mine

Sylvester - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)

TTC - De pauvres riches
--A director name was provided, and I'll take it, but I'm having trouble confirming it anywhere

Lame French pun, I'm afraid- J. C. Pas = << je sais pas >> = "I don't know" because I don't! I'll try to do more digging for the actual director, I'm planning to watch a few more vids to round my list off anyway. That'll include Pants on the Ground if it's a patch on Jimmy Fallon as Young & Springsteen doing Whip My Hair, pure comedy gold

Didn't take me long to find some of my selection's directors http://www.animatedreview.com/2011/09/t ... s.html?m=1 "Animated by Luna Cohiba in collaboration with illustrator Alexandra Compain-Tissier". No director is given for the live-action shots but I'd say for Cohiba and Compain-Tissier to be at least kept as placeholders for the director credits.

Another post from me but should be the last on the thread for now! I've made the final additions to my list from 76 to 100 with none of the prior positions affected. It was mainly videos I'd forgotten about but also a few musical sketches/scenes once I realised these would fit criteria.

One more thing:

Rob Crabbe was allegedly the director throughout Fallon's run as Late Night host, so he's your man here.

Just an update on this: I'll be posting my own list on Saturday. (I pretty much have my list complete, but I'm revisiting a lot of the videos since it's been a while for some of them.) At that point, I'll begin tabulating the lists. If you make a change after that, please let me know. You're more than welcome to change your lists (or even post a new list) until I finish the calculations and send it along to Live in Phoenix (which should take less than a week).

Hopefully, we'll get some more lists by the deadline (or even a little afterward). Thank you to everyone who's participated so far!

Alright, still working on my own video list, but I've begun working on the spreadsheet. Everyone's welcome (and encouraged) to submit lists, but please let me know if you've make any changes so I can adjust the spreadsheet accordingly. (Live in Phoenix, I still plan on having the calculations finished by Friday.)

Thanks, all!

I'm so sorry, jamieW. I edited my list yesterday, and should have mentioned it. My apologies!

No worries at all, Miguel - thanks for letting me know!

I've made up my mind I'm finishing my list tonight if I have to stay up till 3 in the morning. The issue is I found out my "memory" of videos has not been the most dependable, so I've been re-watching all the contenders over the past week (which has moved some way up and others way down). Even though only 100 will count, I'll be posting a top 200. I never realized just how much I love music videos...

Live in Phoenix wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2020 4:51 pm I've been working on director info.

--A director name was provided, and I'll take it, but I'm having trouble confirming it anywhere
mileswide wrote: Fri Sep 04, 2020 12:02 am TTC - De pauvres riches (Dir: J. C. Pas)
(Mileswide, can you help me on this one?)

Veer Union - Seasons
Well, as 4 of these videos are on my list, I tried to find their directors, but I was unsuccessful
:( :(
Carpenters - Superstar
Sylvester - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
These two must have been removed from some performance for some TV show, maybe ...
But these videos are only present on my list and I think they will not qualify for final presentation and if they do qualify, rest assured to exclude these videos from the presentation if credits to the director are considered a requirement for voting
Mac DeMarco - Chamber of Reflection
Replacements - Bastards of Young
These two videos, I think the lack of credits to the director is purposeful, including there is an interview with Mac DeMArco saying that Al Pachino directed the video
Fetch the Bolt Cutters...

Last I checked, though I'm not up to date, every video for the main rollout (requiring a vote from two forum members) has director info. But a qualifying video would make it into the presentation no matter what.

Sorry - just realised I hadn’t numbered my list. I’ve done this now:)

mileswide, Live in Phoenix noticed you and I both have "Fight the Power" listed, but apparently there are 3 versions of this video and all were directed by Spike Lee. I wasn't aware of other versions, so when you had Spike Lee as the director, I just assumed it was from the opening sequence of the movie (featuring Rosie Perez) as mine is. Please let me know which version you were voting for. (And a tip of the cap again to Live in Phoenix for catching these things. He's put an amazing amount of work into this that's made my job so much easier!)

I"ll be wrapping this up today, so if anyone still plans on submitting a list (or making any changes to an existing list), please let me know.

Damn, I had no idea there were so many versions of the video either til I looked on YouTube just now! I only had the short PE rally one in mind https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mmo3HFa2vjg (the movie-scene one you're talking about is fine to me, just not the one I remember, whereas the longer PE rally take has a polemic about the civil rights movement from Chuck D that is just as flippantly disrespectful as his claim in the song that Elvis was a racist)

I have no issue with having my vote for the same version as yours, does that mean that different videos for the same song will be separate entries?

I don't have a preference as far as the previous paragraph is concerned, just raring to see what will doubtlessly winning collaboration between you both, the efforts LiP took in trying to hunt the credits for the Carpenters song alone show just how hard you've both worked on it

Thanks, mileswide! I think for the sake of voting for "favorite versions," I'll keep our versions separate. I haven't seen the version you referred to, but I'm sure interested in watching it as soon as I finish my calculations. (Like everything PE does, it sure sounds interesting!)
