The Beach Boys had one of the oddest careers among widely acclaimed artists. Among the top 20 or so artists on AM, they might be the only one that has only one album in the "albums that you have to listen to when you're getting into music" category: Pet Sounds (I wish I could put Smile Sessions in this category too, but it's probably too much to ask for from an archival release). They are widely known among the public, but really only for their early surf rock era career and select singles like Good Vibrations and Wouldn't It Be Nice. Many people that lived through that era of music, like my parents, still view them more as a novelty act than as a group to take seriously. This attitude makes Pet Sounds one of the most rewarding listens when you first start getting into music; the obvious greatness of that album compared to the band's reputation among the public makes you feel that you're being let in on a secret. But for some reason, many people stop listening to the group at Pet Sounds, even those who enjoy it (for example, the number of ratings for Pet Sounds on RYM is 5x that of any of their other albums). The group's post-Pet Sounds output lacked a singular masterpiece, sure, but it was much higher quality and consistently interesting than its reputation among critics would indicate, and there are so many gems buried in the lesser-known albums. I wonder how the band's reputation would several of their shorter albums from the late 60s/early 70s had been combined into one double album that was a major "statement" album.

Albums:
1. Pet Sounds
2. some version of Smile (I generally know it from Brian Wilson's 2004 version, and the excerpts from the band's 1993 box set)
3. All Summer Long
4. Little Deuce Coupe
5. The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album
6. The Beach Boys Today!
7. Smiley Smile

12. The Beach Boys Love You
13. Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)
14. Surfer Girl
15. Holland
16. Sunflower
17. Surfin’ Safari

These guys sometimes show up in the AM Top Artists top ten, and I've tried at times to listen to all the albums in that top ten, but 30 Beach Boys albums is just way too much for me.

Songs:
1. Wouldn’t It Be Nice

6. Kokomo
7. Surf’s Up

ALBUMS w/comments/rationale
29 | Summer in Paradise | 1992
Truly abysmal. Only "Strange Things Happen" is tolerable.
28 | Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 | 1996
Not sure I count this as a BB album since they do backing vocals on all these. Best track is a decent Willie Nelson take on "Warmth of the Sun". Not sure why she's here because she's far from country but Kathy Troccoli on "I Can Hear Music" is the other highlight.
27 | Carl and the Passions - ""So Tough"" | 1972
I will never understand the apologists for "Marcella". Far away the best track is also the BB only GOOD track about Transcendental Meditation. ("All This is That")
26 | Holland | 1973
This may be the only album where the Brian Wilson contributions are the worst thing on it (other than "Sail On Sailor"). "Steamboat" is pretty trippy for the band.
"Sail" is best cut.
25 | 15 Big Ones | 1976
I've started to appreciate this more with the passage of time. Their version of Spector's "For Once in My Life" has some passion.
24 | Still Cruisin' | 1989
Best NEW cut is "Somewhere Near Japan". "Kokomo" is decent. I don't really think of this as a proper album either, more of a compilation with "Kokomo" tacked on for people who didn't want the COCKTAIL soundtrack.
23 | Keepin' the Summer Alive | 1980
This one gets a lot of hate for the country tinge to some of the songs. Nothing absolutely essential here but "Endless Harmony" is underrated.
22 | That's Why God Made the Radio | 2012
Honestly I haven't heard this one very much. It's mostly pretty slick which will probably keep it from becoming a favourite but there's nothing embarrassing and it seems like there's enough catchy cuts that it could grow on me.
21 | M.I.U. Album | 1978
Hot take: "Hey Little Tomboy" is actually OK if not the most feminist song in the world. Best cut is the underrated "My Diane".
20 | Surfin' U.S.A. | 1963
The titular Chuck Berry ripoff is the star here.
19 | Shut Down Volume 2 | 1964
All car songs album. Best is "409".
18 | Little Deuce Coupe | 1963
More car songs. "Don't Worry Baby" gets the nod over "Fun, Fun, Fun"
17 | Surfin' Safari | 1962
Top track:"409".
16 | Surfer Girl | 1963
Top track "In My Room"
15 | The Beach Boys | 1985
My first "hot take". Yes, this is undeniably an 80s album sonically. Produced by Steve Levine, who was also responsible for at least one Culture Club album, there are synths, Fairlights and electronic drums. Because of this it gets shit on as "dated" which is a tired critic's code for "I would prefer keys and digidrums never existed" rather than any attempt to engage with the actual music contained therein. The band's last really good album. Best tracks: "She Believes in Love Again" and "Where I Belong".
14 | Beach Boys' Party! | 1965
This album is a lie. Presented as a Beach Boys party recorded live in the studio, it was in fact pieced together out of multiple takes and the "party" is calculated. (Listen to the album called THE BEACH BOYS PARTY! UNCOVERED AND UNPLUGGED (2015) and you can hear earnest discussions about "It seems like someone should cough there? Anyone want to cough?") But the fact is that the lie SOUNDS convincing much like a "live" concert album that uses spliced in studio overdubs to cover up flubs. Some of that is likely due to the fact that the participants were a bit drunk and/or "recreationally enhanced" at the time making the performances sound loose. Best tracks: "There's No Other (Like My Baby)", a rare tribute to Brian's idol Phil Spector and a somewhat raw vocal from Dennis on the Beatles "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" as well as the manically sung "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow".
13 | L.A. (Light Album) | 1979
This one attracts a lot of ire for the disco cut ("Here Comes the Night") but I suspect it has less to do with critical dismay that it is bad disco than an assumption that there is no such thing as "good disco". Solid album with trademark BB harmony on several cuts. Highlights:"Full Sail" and "Goin' South".
12 | Wild Honey | 1967
The Beach Boys R&B album. As such, it is rawer vocally than most of their output and there are few group harmonies. Nevertheless it is often good to great if you can get past that. Best ones: "Here Comes the Night" (yes, this is the same one they disco-ized above), the haunting "Let the Wind Blow" and the title track.
11 | Summer Days (And Summer Nights!) | 1965
1965 is when the BB began to cha-cha toward PET SOUNDS...a couple steps forward then one back. So while you get the trio of "California Girls", "Let Him Run Wild" and "Help Me Rhonda" you also get throwback filler like "Amusement Parks U.S.A." which is what keeps this from rising higher.
10 | Smiley Smile | 1967
Undoubtedly the trippiest album the BB ever made. Cobbled together after SMILE fell apart, it was described as a "bunt instead of a grand slam". Taken on its terms instead of comparing it to the SMILE that never was though, I think "double" is more apt. Best cuts "Wonderful", "Good Vibrations" (natch) and "Heroes and Villains".
9 | 20/20 | 1969
An odds and sods collection basically rather than necessarily conceived/written as an album but a lot of good stuff. Best tracks: a gorgeous remake of "I Can Hear Music" that bests Spector at his own game, SMILE acappella castoff "Our Prayer" and "Time to Get Alone" which was written for the band that became Three Dog Night. Album also contains a curiosity, "Never Learn Not to Love", which was brought to the band by a hippie commune leader, one Charles Manson. (Originally titled "Cease to Exist"). It begins with an eerie backmasked cymbal before moving into standard BB territory.
8 | The Beach Boys Love You | 1977
This is probably their most polarizing album. It's full of analog synthesizers, the voices are deeper with little falsetto and the lyrical choices "quirky". Best cuts:"The Night Was So Young", "I Wanna Pick You Up" and "Johnny Carson".
7 | Sunflower | 1970
Probably the most underrated BB album in the U.S. at least. One of the most balanced albums in terms of song contributions revealed that Dennis in particular had some great material to offer. Best cuts: raison d'etre tune "Add Some Music to Your Day", Dennis' gentle "Forever", Bruce's tearjerker "Tears in the Morning" and rocker "It's About Time".
6 | Surf's Up | 1971
This one just eked out Sunflower largely due to the title track. Best cuts: "Surf's Up", somber "'Til I Die", Bruce's paean to youthful innocence "Disney Girls (1957)" and the inspirational "Long Promised Road"
5 | All Summer Long | 1964
A major leap forward for the BB as heard on tracks like "Wendy", "I Get Around" and their reinvigoration of the Mystics' "Hushabye". There are other treasures to be found, too, such as the underrated "Girls on the Beach".
4 | The Smile Sessions | 2011
I honestly feel a bit disingenuous ranking this so highly because it is still, in the end, a group of outtakes from something that never happened. But the pieces are so exquisite from the shattered pottery that was SMILE that it gets a pass. If you want to learn more about the greatest lost album ever, I highly recommend "Look, Listen, Vibrate, Smile" by Domenic Priore which compiles all sorts of news clippings and quotes from the era about the rabid experimentation and eventual implosion. Priore has also written "Smile: The Story of Brian Wilson's Lost Masterpiece" which is newer and easier to find but I can't personally recommend it only because I haven't read it. I am assuming though that it will contain the same information that made "Look!" wonderful (no pun intended). Best cuts: "Good Vibrations", "Wonderful" and "Surf's Up".
3 | Friends | 1968
Brian has been quoted at times as saying this was his favourite BB album. This is probably because it was during a relatively "relaxed" time for the band. In the aftermath of SMILE, the cognoscenti of rock were no longer touting an artistic race for supremacy between the BB and Beatles. But that is not only the only reason. The album is the aural equivalent of a sigh you make upon collapsing into a comfy chair at the end of a day's toil. Best cuts: the waltzing title track, soaring "Be Here in the Morning", Dennis' meditative "Little Bird" and a hymn to puttering around the house, "Busy Doin' Nothing".
2 | The Beach Boys Today! | 1965
Side B is packed with charming ballads that point the way firmly toward PET SOUNDS. Only the sore thumb filler "Bull Session with Big Daddy" ruins the flow.
1 | Pet Sounds | 1966
I don't know what to say about this album other than to say Brian and his collaborators wrote my heart.

Song list still to come..

This was a fun poll to participate in because most of the group's albums are under 30 minutes long and most of their songs are under 3 minutes long, so I was able to do a lot of listening to some of their less famous material. They are so ridiculously good on the songs side; my top 20 below are all in my all-time songs list (second only to the Kinks).

Re: Artist of the Month Song/Album Polls - October '20 - The Beach Boys!

Post by Honorio »

Excellent list everyone! But let me point to the great ones by Father2theMan and Miguel (not by chance the ones with Beach Boys related avatars).

I usually include archival albums on my lists but the only one I'm going to include is "The Smile Sessions" because the other archival albums could fall into the category of compilations with few unreleased songs ("Endless Harmony" and "Hawthorne, CA") or documents of the sessions of previously released albums, like a collection of an album bonus tracks (chronologically "Lost and Found (1961-1962)," "The Pet Sounds Sessions," "Keep an Eye on Summer," "Beach Boys' Party! Uncovered and Unplugged," "Sunshine Tomorrow," "Wake the World" and "I Can Hear Music"). I also haven't included two official albums because no new songs are included and are particularly uninspired projects that would have ended at the bottom of my list: "Stars and Stripes Vol. 1" (re-recording of Beach Boys hits in country key) and "The Beach Boys with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" (not even re-recordings, only undistinguished new orchestral arrangements were added).

Albums:

1. Pet Sounds (1966, my #10 album of all-time)
Brian Wilson left aside the glorification of Californian life, the beaches, surfers, cars and girls that characterized the lyrical universe of the Beach Boys till then. In Brian Wilson's own words: "I was not trying to entertain people, I was expressing my feelings straight from the heart." It was the time to talk about inner feelings, dreams ("Wouldn't it Be Nice"), maladjustment ("I Just Wasn't Made for These Times"), spiritual love ("God Only Knows") or the loss of innocence ("Caroline No": "Where did your long hair go / Where is the girl I used to know / How could you lose that happy glow?"). Best album ever? Well, why not?

2. Surf's Up (1971)
The Beach Boys arrived too late to counterculture. But when they embraced it they did it with an awesome selection of songs.

3. The Smile Sessions (2011)
Unpopular, I know, but I prefer the Brian Wilson 2004 solo album, it feels more finished. Anyway the 2011 album is magical.

4. The Beach Boys Today! (1965)
My favourite pre-"Pet Sounds" album, the first after Brian resigned from touring. Side two (ballads-side) sounds like heaven.

5. Sunflower (1970)
When mental issues exhausted Brian creativity, other members stepped up, with the blossoming of Dennis and Carl talents.

6. 20/20 (1969)
7. Smiley Smile (1967)
8. The Beach Boys Love You (1977)
9. All Summer Long (1964)
10. Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) (1965)

11. Holland (1973)
12. Friends (1968)
13. Surfer Girl (1963)
14. Wild Honey (1967)
15. Carl and the Passions "So Tough" (1972)
16. Surfin' USA (1963)
17. That's Why God Made the Radio (2012)
18. L.A. (Light Album) (1979)
19. Shut Down Volume 2 (1964)
20. Beach Boys' Party! (1965)
21. 15 Big Ones (1976)
22. Surfin' Safari (1962)
23. The Beach Boys' Christmas Album (1964)
24. Little Deuce Coupe (1963)
25. M.I.U. Album (1978)

26. Keepin' the Summer Alive (1980)
27. The Beach Boys (1985)
28. Still Cruisin' (1989)
29. Summer in Paradise (1992)

Songs:

1. God Only Knows (1966, my #4 song of all time)
If someone would ask me about my favourite minute of music (although why the hell somebody would ask me that) I would choose without hesitation the last minute of "God Only Knows." Musically there are a lot of things happening in the song, the chamber pop arrangements, the Christmas percussions, the sweet Carl Wilson vocal… But it's in this last minute where the vocal harmonies of the boys from the beach goes intertwining and intertwining forming a spiral that elevates (you) to heaven.

2. Good Vibrations (1966, #28)
Brian Wilson made a titanic effort to obtain what many people consider the best song ever. Seven months of recordings in three different recording studios (with the Wrecking Crew as session musicians and the superb harmonies of the Beach Boys), creating small musical fragments later placed in a meticulous sound collage, complex but accessible, innovative but addictive, luminous, magical, exciting. But now we know that this creative effort left the unstable Brian exhausted and disturbed.

3. I Get Around (1964, #136)
The acclaim came when the Beach Boys began to use complex harmonies and arrangements but their early songs no less creative and complex. A song like "I Get Around" condenses in little more than 2 minutes incredible vocal arrangements (how not?) and also a great instrumental backing with vibrant stop/start dynamics, and all that with that contagious fun, fun, fun attitude of their early days. The A-side of probably one of the best singles ever released because on the flip-side there was…

4. Don't Worry Baby (1964)
The best of the early ballads, sang by Brian Wilson with his sweet falsetto. He tried to surpass Phil Spector and arguably did it.

5. Surf's Up (1971)
It only took 5 years for Brian Wilson to go from "Surfin'" to "Surf's Up," probably the best example of a truly amazing evolution.

6. Caroline, No (1966)
7. Break Away (1969)

Feeling lazy but I should have found room for this single. Nice list. Very little I would quibble with for being there.

Songs:

7. Break Away (1969)
126. Aren't You Glad (1967)
133. The Little Girl I Once Knew
I should have shoehorned these in as well. You're clearly a huge fan. I see lots of obscurities on here. I'm guessing you have the "Living Doll" flexi-disc. 😛

Hi everyone! Today is the last day for this poll. My apologies that we won’t see the results for maybe a few weeks, I’m gonna take a little break after the All-Time poll, and then I still have the Prince results to do. Thank you all for your patience and participation!

Thank you, Father2TheMan! Well, count me as a huge fan, of course!
And I don't have that flexi-disc, no :D. But, of course, I've listened to the song in YouTube. P.S. for the not-as-huge fans: it was a flexi-disc included in a California Barbie doll in 1987...

Thank you so much. I have to say that Breakaway Break Away is not just one of my favourite Beach Boys songs. It was even my favourite of them for many years.

Thank you very much, Honorio. Yes, Surf's Up is my favourite album, not just from The Beach Boys discography. As I already mentioned to you once, Pet Sounds is, surely, a much superior album in every way. But the other one is more of a "personal weakness". For a time in my life it was a kind of soundtrack that accompanied me at certain times, and that makes me have a very special affection for it.
