Help wanted - genres for songs on AM

Post by Sweepstakes Ron »

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Here's a spreadsheet with every song included on AM, that anyone can edit. I'm trying to find the genres (as listed on RYM) for as many songs as possible. If the song was released as a single, you can look at the genre tags for the single release, or you can look at the separate tags for individual album tracks. Only primary genre tags are necessary, secondary genre tags need not be listed. Oftentimes, the genres between single releases and album tracks may be contradicting, so if you're uncertain about a genre tag just put it down in the "additional notes" column. Since RYM itself is still in the preliminary stages of implementing song genres, don't worry too much about getting everything perfect right away - there's always time for revision.

Also when the single is not on RYM, you can check the Wikipedia page.

I am not a registered RYM user, and I don't see this feature over there. However on sonemic.com, which is the official successor to RYM and is currently in open beta, I can click on an individual track on an album page and then see genre tags for the individual song. I think this might be the best way to do this, since the genre tags for single releases also take into account the b-side, which may be differing stylistically from the acclaimed a-side. I think Wikipedia should only be used when there is no other option available since often it is not really clear how the consensus on what genre a specific song is was made or if there even is one.

You have to go to the genre voting page for the album then on the left you can see the genre votes for each individual track

Ok, thank you. I still think this is only for registered users (or I am too stupid to find it). But I guess it would be no problem to sign up quickly if someone wanted to help.

Going to try and do some of these tonight, do we just want the first primary genre or if there are three or four should all of them go on?

All of them go in, as is already the case with albums on the site.

Another thing to note: on RYM, with both albums and songs, there is a lot of redundant tagging (e.g. an album is tagged as both Dream Pop and Alternative Rock, even though Dream Pop is already categorized as a subgenre of Alternative Rock). Henrik, do you think people should try to avoid adding these redundancies to the spreadsheet, or is it not a big deal?

I must re-emphasize this point, because I see there is (at least) one person who keeps adding the secondary genres (with the primary genres in bold) and I hate having to undo all their hard work!

Sorry, that was me, I didn't fully take in the instructions at first. I've now stopped listing secondary genres though, so you can rest assured the only descriptors included by me from here on in are primary genres

I suppose I should note here that the genre name "Lo-Fi Indie" has been changed to "Lo-Fi / Slacker Rock".

I think the use of genres according RYM is only referential, no? I mean it won't change everytime changes on there, right? I remember they began using Allmusic.com as reference years ago.

Do we know what songs from 2018/2019 are going to be added, so we can add genres for those as well?

Wohoo!!!! This is amaaaazing!!!

Last time I looked at the spreadsheet I only saw genres added for a few songs (maybe I looked at the additional notes column?) but now it is almost complete! :music-guitarred:

A BIG BIG thanks to everyone who has helped out here and to Sweepstakes Ron in particular for organizing this!!

It will take some time until I have implemented these genre data. But you can always post song genre lists and add them to this topic: http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=3&t=4180

I looked at the version history, and it was removed on August 6, 6:02 PM. Has any important changes been done after that?

I have identified 258 (!) genres that are not yet on AM... Could you please help me fill in the attached spreadsheet, so I can add these additional genres to the genre tree. Thank you!

Vacantjoy, I think it is not the best way to start the eternal discussion about music genres. Later it could be good having interesting proposals for establishing some new parameters. But so far, it's good to integrate music genres to the songs.

The proposals that i made in my opinion are obvious ones, even if we don't consider RYM and Wikipedia categorizing them in these genres,if you hear the albums you understand it by yourself! For example m b v sounds distorted ...so all the songs in this album should be in humble opinion listed as noise pop.In this case if my comments are inappropriate i am not going to add useless information!

I agree that there could be some that needed to be changed without pointing to a particular problem but we need some objective criteria beyond our opinions (Even in RYM there are music genres disagreements and changes all the time). My fear is that this could bring down the next incorporation of music genres into songs, and it is something that was kept on hold for years.

If later it appears some proposal for considering changes you are talking about, I will support you but first we need to build the foundation.

That genre was already in the spreadsheet, the "neuva" one was a misspelled duplicate.

"Neuva canción latinoameric" is actually "Nueva canción latinoamericana".
That genre was already in the spreadsheet, the "neuva" one was a misspelled duplicate.
You're right. But I think the unidentified genres needs to be corrected.

I'll try to make some observations in there.

Disco Pop: should be "Disco", "Pop" ?
Electronica: should be "Electronic" (I think there was a "Electronica" genre before, someone confirms that)
Nee Wave: should be "New Wave"
Neuva canción latinoameric: should be "Nueva canción latinoamericana"
New Soul: should be "Neo Soul"
Reggae Pop: should be "Pop Reggae"
UK Funk: I didn't find anything similar in RYM (except for a title in an album)
