EXTINCTION - 200 Greatest Artists

Post by SavoyBG »

The list is from Digital Dream Door's "300 Greatest Popular Artists" of all time, all genres of popular music. We're only using the top 200 from the list.

Here's the rules. Each poster can choose one act to eliminate each day (new day starts at midnight eastern time). There's just one difference from the songs contest. A poster can eliminate any act from 101-200 by himself. In order to eliminate an act in the top 100 it takes two different posters to vote that act out. So when you vote you can either eliminate an act from 101-200, or put one strike on an act in the top 100, or, as we get going, you can give a second strike to an act in the top 100 and eliminate them. If you are giving an act in the top 100 their first strike, use the S to put a line through the act's name. This should help eliminate crazy oustings of top acts by one poster who doesn't like them.

No, I think the acts in the top 100 deserve an advantage. This was we don't get Moonbeam eliminating the Beatles right away like he will in the other game with the Rolling Stone list. I see you gave Mariah Carey her first strike.

Savoy - I would be very surprised if there aren't two votes against the Beatles.

156. Celine Dion
There's no doubt in a technical point of view she has a fantastic voice but she never used it to sing a decent song or to convey any honest emotion.

Here's the current list. The S line does not copy when you copy and paste so see Mariah Carey for what else you need to do when giving a top 100 artist their first strike. That way the poster will know which acts need to get the S when they post.

Well, if it was called "most popular artists" I would have a bit less issues than "greatest popular artists", especially since I'm not sure the definition of "popular" is one anybody can agree on.
The US bias is not an issue by itself, Hank Williams had little to no impact on Europe but I really don't mind seeing him in the top 50. Then seeing Al Jolson, the Mills Brothers and Mahalia Jackson is more surprising. Heck I can even let Conway Twitty go (which since you seem to base a lot of importance around Billboard charts should be way higher based on your criteria).

I don't feel you always are unbiased toward those criteria by the way, let's take 2 artists, Robert Johnson and the Velvet Underground. Robert Johnson sold very poor records during his lifetime, The Velvet were not the biggest seller either though (as said in another post) didn't fare too poorly. Both later acquired cult status and are cited as huge influences and major artists by critics and other bands, none are much aired on the radio (I guess you're more likely to hear Sunday Morning than anything by Robert Johnson, though Cream's Crossroads probably still is a staple of classic rock stations). So I'm really curious to understand why with those 2 artists with relatively similar profiles based on your criteria, one is 42 of all time and the other isn't even in the top 200, except for the fact that you like one and hate the other.

Anyway, based on "greatness" and not on "popularity" (but sure, those 2 terms are both hard to defined) I don't want to see Streisand, Tony Bennett, Mariah Carey, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como or R. Kelly in a top 100 all time.
Though at least the inclusion of R. Kelly saves it from being a total slap in the face to anyone under 40 given the lack of lots of things popular during our lifetime.

First off, I am not a big Robert Johnson fan, but he did have the biggest selling blues album of all time, a platinum album. The VU never had any big selling item. They are on the list, they are just not in the top 200. They are #279.

http://digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_artistspop.html

My definition of greatness, and DDD's general definition of greatness includes popularity as part of the criteria. Otherwise all you have left to determine greatness is personal taste.

What is your problem with Streisand, Como, Mathis and Bennett, aside from the probable fact that you don't personally like their music? All 4 artists are legendary traditional pop artists who have had dozens of huge selling albums and/or singles. Mathis and Streisand are each among the 5 biggest album artists in USA history.

I mean, you can't actually believe that a cult band like the VU is in the same league as artists with succesful 50 and 60 year careers like Streisand and Mathis, can you?

Lots of Grammys, and awards and other acclaim for these artists. They may not have a lot of acclaim on THIS site, but that's because most of the critics whose lists are used on this site are strictly rock critics.

As for your comment about R.Kelly, there are plenty of more modern artists on the enitire list. My idea is that an act (in most cases) has to be around for decades before they prove that they belong on a list of all time greats. If this was 1978 would you want to see Peter Frampton on the list? Or if this was 1975 would you want to see Grand Funk on the list?

I'm still not entirely clear of the criteria you employed to come up with this list, but if album sales and number one albums alone were used then it would be hard to justifiably exclude a band like Nirvana who have in the region of 75 million album sales. That coupled with the fact that they were and still are an incredibly critically acclaimed act and have undoubtedly been a major influence to many artist would, in my humble opinion, warrant a quite high position on your list.
The only reason i can think of that they might be excluded or be placed outside the top 200 is that there is a quite evident bias against acts from the last 20 years or so on the list.

I consider myself an above average knowledgeable music fan, and there are artists on this list I'm not really familiar with. Hence, as much as I think most of us should learn more about music history, to me the name of this list isn't fitting. It looks more like "the 200 most popular artists of old times".

Recorded music has been around now for 120 years. Why would you not want to cover all eras of this on an all time list. People like Al Jolson are among the greatest recording stars of all time. Enrico Caruso MADE the record industry. If not for the huge sales of his records in the early 20th century the record business may not have survived. In those days there was no radio, no way to hear the great Caruso unless you saw him perform live. When he started making records it caused millions of people around the world to go out and buy record players so that they could hear the Great Caruso, who before that they had only been able to read about.

If not for theese pioneers recorded music may not have caught on with the public.

The vast majority of the acts you've just listed were at there creative peaks 20/30/40 years ago, so depending on the age of the person you ask, the answer might well be a most definite yes. i can appreciate that the recorded music industry has been around longer than any of us, and i'm sure the inclusion of many of the acts that are unfamiliar to most of us is justifiable, but that doesnt take away from the fact that many acts that have made significant contributions to music over more recent years have been overlooked.

I have no intention of naming any of the acts on the list you just included or any acts that are not on the above list, nor am i going to name any acts that i think might warrant exclusion from the list. Any acts i might mention for either exclusion or addition to the list would be tainted by my own pesonal bias and musical preferences and i'll be damned if i get drawn into a protracted argument over the merits of one artist over another.
That aside, my original point remains valid, that there is a quite evident bias against acts of more recent times on the list, which is probably quite evident to the majority of posters here.

You used Peter Frampton as an example of an artist who were very popular, but just over a few years, as an argument to not include new artists. But what about The Ravens? According to Wikipedia "They were one of the most successful and most influential vocal quartets of the period, and had several hits on the R&B chart in the late 1940s and early 1950s." That's only a few years, and I don't think they have been very popular since then. I don't think any people I know are aware of them at all. So if The Ravens fit the criteria for this list, I think the latest stars could be eligible as well.

And Nirvana, I assume you consider them very popular but as you don't find them great you have excluded them from the top 200? I'm just trying to understand as I think they should be in the top 30 if you're making an attempt to be objective.

We don't feel that an act that has only been around for 8 or 10 years has done enough yet to warrant inclusion among the greats of all time. That's something that an artist earns over a lifetime. Or at least over decades of work. Same reason why acts are not eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame until 25 years after their first release.

The list is not tainted by my own musical prefences. There are dozens of acts on the list that I personally hate, and some of my all time favorites are not on the list, like Smiley Lewis, Sticks McGhee, the Five Royales and Five Keys.

If it was based on my musical preferences there would be no Madonna, no Police/Sting, no Mariah Carey, no Whitney Houston, no Radiohead, No Pearl Jam, No Jay-Z, No R. Kelly, etc...etc...etc....

I think I've got it now. The list is a combination of greatness according to you and popularity accoring to Billboard. If you confirm this I have no more questions. :D

Hey SavoyBG, I usually do not say what I'm about to say, but I could not help it. Anyway I do not think you care much, but see, this game really seems like a very good idea (Thanks Henrik). It's fun, and you learn not only music, but also why the judgment of others. The problem is that from my perspective, as opposed to playing Henrik's "Survivor", your EXTINCTION games are just not fun, (Well, Ok... At least wholesome fun. I almost died laughing with some arguments in the last game.'ll use some of them as examples in my next work on fallacies and dogmatic beliefs.) they do not teach anything really, do not leave me anything useful ... nothing, Bruce.

Well, I could simply not play, but I like the theme of the game, and I realized that if you create these games, neither Henrik nor I nor anyone else will create another game of the same style at the same time or within a few weeks, probably. I'd like to play with the list of AM. Playing fairly, and not you answering each of the other players who are wrong from your perspective. I mean, this would be fine, except that it instead of giving valid reasons, you resort to things like
SavoyBG wrote:I think you're 100% wrong
or
SavoyBG wrote:That dumb record only someone who is stoned would like.
or
SavoyBG wrote:It's just noise.

or
SavoyBG wrote: Unfortunately there are a lot of white people around the world [...]
etc.

Well, maybe you will answer me with many other words and letters and space, and they will have the style that I quoted earlier. You have the right of reply, but I'm not willing to discuss, at least on this topic. I will keep reading this, but I will limit my future contributions on this topic to animated gifs. This will avoid falling into disrespect that more than just affect you, affect the bright image of this forum, and the reputation of Acclaimed Music in general.

Thanks for reading and sorry if I have grammar or syntax errors.

KEY WORDS - "Any people YOU know." Among people I know none of them could even name a song by Nirvana, but many are huge Ravens fans. I am 55 years old, and most of my music friends are 60-75 years old.

The Ravens are highly influential as the first doo wop group. They started a very important sub genre of rock that was popular for the first 15 years of rock. I think the early pioneers of each genre are more significant than the followers from decades later. I have added Nirvana to the list and perhaps they will move up in the next revision.

Meanwhile, here's a list for you, from an organization that had a couple thousand members at the time that this list was done in 2000. I'm sure you've never heard of most of the songs and groups, but there are tens of thousands of fans of this music around the world. The Ravens have 11 songs on the list.

I can't confirm this because there are artists on the list who never had a hit on Billboard, like Lead Belly and Son House, for instance.

The criteria of the list is:

These Greatest Popular Music Artists were ranked for their Popularity, Influence, and Impact in Popular Music.

So, acclaim is not part of the criteria.

How can you justifiably call it a greatest of all time list then?

Henrik calls the lists on this site "The 3000 most recommended albums and songs of all time" yet there is relatively very little music listed from the first half of the 20th century. Bing Crosby only has one song in the top 2500 and only one other song in the top 3000. And just 4 songs listed as extras. Do you not think that Bing Crosby was highly acclaimed in his day?

The VU do not do well in the criteria. They have great influence, but almost no popularity and very little impact, which means the industry reaction to their releases at the time.

Given that recorded music has been around for 125 years, the last 15 years ahould only get about 12% (15/125). And that's assumi ng that you are ready to decalre an act an all time great after just 8 or 10 years.

Considering the acts you had listed as new are from the past 45 years, that would make them worthy of roughly 35% of the list, as opposed to the 15% they're receiving.
And if you really want to play that game, I guarantee the 50's have more than 8% (16 artists) they're "entitled" to.

Okay, here's the top 50 right now. Which of these acts do you feel should be below Nirvana?

Before you answer, let's just remember that Nirvana has released a grand total of about 40 studio tracks in their entire career.

Do you have them ahead of John Coltrane, Bob Marley, Tommy Dorsey, Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Madonna, all who are not in the top 29? How about Springsteen and Pink Floyd and Queen, none of who are in the top 40? Do you see Nirvana and their 38 studio tracks as a greater artist tham those people?

1. Beatles
2. Elvis Presley
3. Frank Sinatra
4. Bing Crosby
5. Michael Jackson / Jackson 5
6. Louis Armstrong
7. James Brown
8. Billie Holiday
9. Bob Dylan
10. Johnny Cash
11. Duke Ellington
12. Ray Charles
13. Chuck Berry
14. Hank Williams
15. Aretha Franklin
16. Al Jolson
17. Glenn Miller
18. B.B. King
19. Nat King Cole
20. Rolling Stones
21. Ella Fitzgerald
22. Muddy Waters
23. Stevie Wonder
24. Beach Boys
25. Benny Goodman
26. Charlie Parker
27. Miles Davis
28. Little Richard
29. Louis Jordan
30. John Coltrane
31. Bessie Smith
32. Bob Marley and the Wailers
33. Mahalia Jackson
34. Tommy Dorsey
35. Mills Brothers
36. Led Zeppelin
37. Marvin Gaye
38. Woody Guthrie
39. Jimi Hendrix
40. The Who
41. Madonna
42. Jimmie Rodgers
43. Robert Johnson
44. Sam Cooke
45. Bruce Springsteen
46. Queen
47. Abba
48. Pink Floyd
49. Buddy Holly and the Crickets
50. Elton John

Nirvana may have only released 38 studio tracks (albeit most of them are exceptional), but they still had one of the greatest impacts of the 90's. You, as a music historian, or whatever the hell you call yourself, should be able to acknowledge that.
Therefore they should without a doubt be in the top 50, and probably higher, and yet they aren't even in the top 200. That's ridiculous.

So you think that a band with a whopping three albums is as influential as Sarah Vaughan? They went over ten years between their 2nd and 3rd albums. Sarah Vaughan

Beiber has no influence at all, and is not respected by other musicians.

Maybe you'd like me to add Donny Osmond to the list?

Check out the length of Vaughan's wikipedia article and the length of Portishead's wikipedia article and tell me which artist is thought of to be more significant?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Vaughan

Many modern artists, however, have claimed Sarah Vaughan as a major influence, chief among them Teena Marie, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Chrisette Michele, Amy Winehouse and Alison Goldfrapp.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portishead_(band)

In September 2011, Barrow stated in a Rolling Stone interview that he would begin work on his portion of the album in January 2012, pointing out "that could mean another fucking 10 years" before a new album is released.

I could make a list of about 25 or so artists on that list, but I'll say ABBA for right now.

Oooh...Wikipedia articles! The pinnacle of excellence and accuracy!
Let's get rid of Henrik's formula for determining the artists list on AM and just base it off how long their pages are on Wikipedia.

Using your criteria, here are the ones that I think should obviously be ahead of Nirvana. I'm not saying that Nirvana should be #7, but it's closer to how I see it than your 273rd place.

Beatles
Elvis Presley
Michael Jackson / Jackson 5
Bob Dylan
Rolling Stones
David Bowie (not in your top 50)

I don't think the number of songs released have such a great impact on your criteria.

Abba was the biggest artist in the world for a decade and they turned down a billion dollards to go on tour again, and you want them to rank below a band that only has 38 tracks in their entire catalog?

Henrik's formula's are good, but the problem is that he counts albums double in the artist rankings which is totally unfiar to artists from the pre-album era. There were no "albums" until about 1954 and albums were not important for most artists until at least the mid-1960s.

Do you really think it's accurate to say that Wilco, Pavement and Portishead and PJ Harvey are more acclaimed than Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Sam Cooke?

That's what henrik's artist rankings say.

An artist with over 300 hits (like Bing Crosby) is gonna crush an artist with only 38 tracks in popularity.

Do you seriously believe that Nirvana should rank ahead of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong?

According to you there's no act from before rock and roll who is greater than Nirvana?

Actually you have it ranked below Robert Johnson...

Everything stemmed from Robert Johnson. We'll see if Nirvana is more famous 80 years after their career like Johnson is. I doubt that people will even know who they are in 2075.

I said those are the ones that should obviously be ahead of Nirvana. Those three that you mention here are really difficult to compare to Nirvana. It depends on how you weight the past and the present. All four artists have had huge popularity and impact in the past. Minus for Nirvana is that they have a shorter past. Plus for Nirvana is that they are a lot more popular and have much more impact on the music scene today.

Today is no more important than yesterday. Beckham is much more popular than Pele today, but that doesn't make him a greater player.

I also highly doubt that Nirvana is more popular, even today, than Frank Sinatra. There are radio stations in 2013 that play nothing but Sinatra 24 hours a day. People of all ages like Sinatra, while very few people over the age of 40 or so listen to Nirvana.

I don't know how old your parents are, or if your grandparents are still alive, but ask them if they like Nirvana.

My 78 year old mother and my 82 year old father are big Sinatra fans, but they have never heard of Nirvana. They have never even heard of Led Zeppelin.

Nirvana's music is only played on classic rock stations. Sinatra's music is played on several different radio formats.

When you are ranking the greatest acts of all time, who is popular today does not mean any more than who was popular in 1947. Bing Crosby was the top recording artist in the world for almost 20 years. He was much bigger in his heydey than Nirvana ever was in theirs.

Do you have any arguments against Nirvana that don't include their 38 song studio catalog?
Perhaps a better question: Have you ever heard a Nirvana song?

My view on popularity, influence and impact is obviously borrowed from critics and there are other ways to look at it. Again there is no right or wrong, because there are no objective measures of these criteria.

Savoy, thanks for the discussion. I have nothing more to say now.

Whether I have heard a Nirvana song or not is not relevant (I have) to calculating their historical standing among the all time great recording artists. My personal opinion of their music is just not relevant.

A career that only consists of 38 tracks is a pretty strong argument for not ranking an act among the 30 greatest acts of all time.

It's not so much arguments against Nirvana as it is arguments FOR the acts that rank ahead of them. Elton John, for instance, was the biggest act in the world in the 1970s and has continued to have hits for decades after that. He also has the biggest selling single in history. He is popular with people of all ages and races, even placing a few records on the black chart. Nirvana is essentially only popular with white people under 40. A lot of people have only heard of Nirvana because of the suicide of one of the band's members. There are many people who know of the band for that reason, but have never heard any of their music.

The biggest style of rock over the past 25 years is hip hop, and Nirvana has had no effect on that.
