The Supremes are one of those performers that don't have a consensus choice for "definitive" song. "Stop! In the Name of Love," "You Can't Hurry Love," "Baby Love," "Love Child," and "Where Did Our Love Go" are all contenders. Of them, I think "Where Did Our Love Go," despite being their breakthrough hit, is the weakest cut, although "weakest" is most definitely a relative term, considering that "Love Go" ranks in my all-time top 1000.

40) Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
39) Just My Imagination - Temptations
38) Light My Fire - The Doors
37) Tainted Love- Soft Cell

27) Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
26) Be My Baby - Ronettes
25) Will You Love Me Tomorrow - Shirelles
24) Where Did Our Love Go- Supremes

According to AM it's either "Stop! In The Name of Love" or "Where Did Our Love Go" as the top Supremes song. To say it's "weaker" than "Love Child" is just wrong IMO. People went crazy when they first heard "Where" as it sounded so different than anything that had ever come before it. The group has 5 songs in AM's top 762 of all time, and "Love Child" is not even in the top 2800. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" is a brilliant record.

Gimme Shelter was not a single...at least not in the USA or the UK.

A great record for sure. The story of its recording is fascinating.

Quincy Jones did not even think the song was good enough to be on the album. MJ had to fight him tooth and nail to get it included.

Whatever it was, it won both Bracketology and the AM Songs poll. And if Henry's vote counted and you hadn't gotten in before me, it would have won this too.

Clearly a favorite in any board poll we run.

Of course both Billie Jean and Gimme Shelter are in my top 10 AT.

stone37 wrote:The Supremes are one of those performers that don't have a consensus choice for "definitive" song.
I did consider putting "You Keep Me" in my original post. I included "Love Child," because it was their biggest hit, at least according to Joel Whitburn, Billboard guru. In his list of the Top 50 songs by Diana Ross and/or the Supremes, it ranks third, only behind "Endless Love" and "Upside Down."

For artists and songs, I think of three categories. Biggest Hit. Defining Track. Best Song. The first category is basically objective (but you can argue the evidence). "Defining" is subjective, but requires evidence. The third is completely subjective. It is a matter of taste.

For the Supremes, I would go:

Biggest Hit (at the time of release): "Love Child," but a strong case can be made for "Where Did Our Love Go" or "Baby Love"

Defining Song (best remembered, most enduring): "Stop! In the Name of Love" ("Where Did Our Love Go" would probably be #2)

Best Song: "You Can't Hurry Love"

Sorry, RickMayer, you're 2 years too late on this one... But it's been a while since we've had one of these, so I'd be down to start one later tonight. Anyone wanna join?

This looks interesting. Kinda like Random Rules. We could just use AM's top 200, 100, etc, or maybe even the AMF's top (insert number here) on our latest songs poll.

And at the risk of seeming like a complete idiot, I must confess I didn't realize until just now that you must have some sort of carousel of images for your avatar, Sweepstakes Ron. I honestly thought you kept changing the picture for the longest time.
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...

I'm shocked this thread didn't end up locked. Maybe it was but got unlocked following the removal of Bruce from the forum.
