AMF Favorite Books 2020 Edition Recommendations Thread

Post by BleuPanda »

Figured this would be good to reference for the next few months.

Here's my current top 25 (which is constantly changing because I've read a pathetic amount of books in my life until this last year); my top 2 didn't even make the top 100 last time, so I hope people will give them a chance! I'm bolding each book which did not make the previous top 100.

1. White Noise by Don DeLillo
2. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
3. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevesky
4. His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman
5. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
6. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
7. Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
8. Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov
9. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
10. Watership Down by Richard Adams
11. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin (do I need to list this as part of the Hain series? This and The Dispossessed below tend to be held up by themselves but share the same universe, and I'm likely to never bother with the earlier entries, so I would never actually recommend the series as a cohesive unit)
12. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
13. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
14. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
15. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
16. A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin (I actually like the first and third book a fair bit more than the others)
17. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
18. The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
19. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
20. 1984 by George Orwell
21. Macbeth by William Shakespeare
22. The Road by Cormac McCarthy
23. Hamlet by William Shakespeare
24. The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin
25. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

So a lot of those that were missing are genre fiction, but I hope that interests at least some of you

I don't think I'll participate in the voting for the poll but I'll post a couple of books I really enjoyed here, even if some of them are very well known:

VALIS by Phillip K. Dick
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
The Shining by Stephen King
Burning Secret by Stefan Zweig
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
There is No More Firmament.

I'd be shocked if this one didn't make the top 100 this time around, given its newfound popularity.

The fun thing is, I was going to watch both Game of Thrones and The Handmaid's Tale but decided to check out the books first, which is what kicked off me suddenly reading like crazy. Still haven't seen either show past the first episode! So my ASOIAF rank is also after spending a decade being kind of annoyed by the show's obsessive fanbase - though I'm still annoyed at the fanbase because it feels like the series gets discussed for all the wrong reasons (people really overemphasize the "anyone can die" bit...)

Three books from the 2010s I’d like to recommend - The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys, both by Colson Whitehead and Red Clocks by Leni Zumas. All three will be appearing high up on my list.

I have quickly compiled a list of 100 works. It is very heavy on old German books.
I don't know if I forgot something or if I will add something later (I tend to read a lot).
I tried finding the English title for most of the German books, but I couldn't find one for all of them.

I don't usually focus on this sort of stuff too hard, but the fact that only 8 entries in my 100 entries are written by women (for a total of 14 books, as Rowling's entry counts for 7 books), may mean I ought to make a conscious effort to read a bit more by women in the coming years...
