Re: Favorite Album From The Year You Were Born?
The Dreaming by Kate Bush. Always wondered how it ranked in that last 80s album poll we took. Hoping Hounds of Love made the top 3. Being that the 80s was so dismal I only voted for a handful of artists so I had to really stretch out my list at the recommendation of the administrator of the poll. But Kate was definitely one of the few reasons I voted. She’d be my Joe Biden I guess you can say

In Utero. I should listen to more albums from the 90s cos I can't even do a top 10 from 1993.

Mine's a three-way battle between Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden, Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime. 1988 was a weird year.

Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californiacation, I haven't listened to Moby's Play yet but from the songs I've heard it may overtake the number one spot. I also don't really like a lot of the music from 1999.

Wish I could make a more idiosyncratic pick, but I have to go with Abbey Road. With Let It Bleed a very close second. #3 would probably be Trout Mask Replica, but even that doesn't really qualify as a left-field choice by now.

Well, I’d like to pick something else since it’s the obvious choice and there’s great competition that year but I’d be lying if I said any other album gives me more enjoyment than Nevermind...

I have now listened to Play and can definitely say that I enjoyed it better than Californiacation. I've also noticed that I have a lot of guilty pleasure music from 1999: Creed's "Higher", Sugar Ray's "Every Morning" and "Someday", Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" and Len's "Steal My Sunshine".ordinaryperson wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2020 5:32 pm Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californiacation, I haven't listened to Moby's Play yet but from the songs I've heard it may overtake the number one spot. Not a big year in music 1990, but these two artistic legends got together and paid tribute to their dearly departed friend Andy Warhol with the Style It Takes.

I have heard surprisingly little from 1987. I guess for now it is In My Tribe by 10,000 Maniacs, which is great.
Though I feel it is a missed opportunity somehow that I haven't yet heard Big Black's Songs About Fucking.

Depending on what mood I'm in, I could go for Kraftwerk - RadioAktivität, Springsteen's Born to Run, Tom Waits' Nighthawks at the Diner, Bowie's Young Americans or Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, but for today it's Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Re: Favorite Album From The Year You Were Born?
Glad this thread came back, certainly an interesting topic!
Looking back at the options, Is This It by The Strokes is an easy choice. 2001 is probably the weakest year in music from 2000-2004, but it's hard to deny some great albums come from 2001:
No particular order, Is This It being my favorite by a pretty wide margin. Pretty basic list, but I agree with the critics pretty often
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Daft Punk - Discovery
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Bjork - Vespertine
Bob Dylan - Love and Theft
The Microphones - The Glow, Part 2
System of a Down - Toxicity
Some albums from 2001 that I don't love as much as critics (or people on this forum!)
Radiohead - Amnesiac (always shocked when this places above other, better Radiohead albums like In Rainbows, A Moon Shaped Pool, and Hail to the Thief)
Jay-Z - The Blueprint (much worse than some of Jay-Z's other projects like The Black Album and Watch the Throne)

Re: Favorite Album From The Year You Were Born?
I am probably the youngest on this site! My favorites from the year I was born are...
Rufus Wainwright - Want One (86/100)
The White Stripes - Elephant (84/100)
The Rapture - Echoes (83/100)
Martin Gore - Counterfiet 2 (76/100)
Dave Gahan - Paper Monsters (74/100)
Oddly enough, despite Radiohead being my second favorite artist, Hail To The Thief is the only project of theirs that is just average to me.
I know I am a youngster but I have managed to listen to roughly 730 albums so I would like to think I am doing well.

Don't worry Edre Peraza, the fact that you are chosen Rufus in 1 absolves you of all your youthful sins. It's a fantastic album.
