Biggest Fan Songs - April 2020
Welcome to the April 2020 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.
There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.
Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.
You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

448. Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé - Barcelona
Year: 1987
Album: Barcelona
Biggest Fan: Profeta (#109)
The song is on Spotify only in a shortened single version and in a version with newly recorded instrumentation (who does that, some twenty years after the artist died?). For the full album cut in it's original make-up, go here:

448. Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé - Barcelona - 8 - Once upon a time this would've made my top 1000 but it's fallen out of my favour ever so slightly over the years. Still a big fan, and would likely make an expanded top 2000 list for me.

I never liked this. I'm already not big on opera, but this faux-opera that combines the voices of a real opera star with a rock star whose approach to opera is to yell harder, just comes across as silly kitsch.

Nah, I think it was Paul Rodgers. That other guy could be a dead ringer, though.

I love The Waterboys' Fisherman Blues, but never went beyond that album. This sounds like a song that could come from that one and if more of their later work is like this it might be worth a listen.

My first 10/10, and a rare one where I think the chorus is the worst part of the song. It's still good, but the melodies in every other part of the song are magnificent.

Florence + the Machine – Ship to Wreck: 3
I feel like have attacked this song multiple times already on this forum and that I should stop. The only thing I can think to add is that I find the chorus one of the most annoying of recent years. I'm surprised this one only got a single vote during the poll, as it feels to me as one of the most overrated songs of last decade.

Lol. And I think it’s one of the most underrated... you probably just think it’s overrated because I keep talking it up. But I haven’t heard anyone else say they think the verses and bridge are as great as I think they are, both in the writing and the performance. They’re among my favorites of the decade.Rob wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 5:23 pm Florence + the Machine – Ship to Wreck: 3

Maybe, but it also got a lot of radio play around here when it came out and at least in my personal social circles Florence + the Machine were extremely popular. It's one of those songs I disliked from the first listen, but was then forced to hear over and over again.andyd1010 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 6:07 pmLol. Fair enough, and then it just got a 9 and a 10 here, so maybe it’s thought of more highly than I realized.Rob wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 7:11 pmMaybe, but it also got a lot of radio play around here when it came out and at least in my personal social circles Florence + the Machine were extremely popular. It's one of those songs I disliked from the first listen, but was then forced to hear over and over again.andyd1010 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 6:07 pmLol. And I think it’s one of the most underrated... you probably just think it’s overrated because I keep talking it up.Rob wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 5:23 pm Florence + the Machine – Ship to Wreck: 3
I feel like have attacked this song multiple times already on this forum and that I should stop. The only thing I can think to add is that I find the chorus one of the most annoying of recent years. I'm surprised this one only got a single vote during the poll, as it feels to me as one of the most overrated songs of last decade.

An earlier attempt of Talking Heads to 'go Africa'. Very catchy, funky and fun.

451. Talking Heads – I Zimbra - 10
Do I have to do 2 10's in a row? Perhaps I do. After all, it is my selection.
Fear of Music is a weird album for me, I don't like it as much as the critics. But there's two songs that really stand head and shoulders above the rest for me: I Zimbra and Cities. They've been favourites of mine for a long time, since I started to get into my Dad's music as a teenager.
If you haven't heard it before, the live reindition that got cut from Stop Making Sense is also incredible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYFqdrOMqk4
