Rate the Album, 2020, Ratings Thread!

Post by Holden »

Hello! I thought we could use this rate the album section to rate new albums! So here it is! In this thread, comment the albums you’ve heard from 2020 (good and bad), and rate them out of ten! I’ll collect all the data and make a ranking!

You have until January 31st, 2021 to get in ratings, after which I will be doing a pretty low-key rollout of the results.

Here's everything from 2020 I've heard above a 6. The order and rating may waver over the year, especially after more spins (everything below has had at least 2 full listens apart from The Weather up There and Deities, both of which I've only heard this week):

Moon Hooch - Life on Other Planets 9
Alexandra Savior - The Archer 8.5
The Big Moon - Walking like We Do 8.5
Les Amazones d'Afrique - Amazones Power 8.5
Moses Boyd - Dark Matter 8.5
NOISIΛ - Armajet EP (Original Game Soundtrack) 8
Alien NoseJob - Suddenly Everything Is Twice as Loud* 8
Wire - Mind Hive 8
Gengahr - Sanctuary 8
Sepultura - Quadra 8
Sløtface - Sorry for the Late Reply* 8
Paul Bergmann - Paradise EP 7.5
Mercston - Top Tier 7.5
Algiers - There Is No Year 7.5
Anti-Flag - 20/20 Vision 7.5
Katie Gately - Loom* 7.5
Jeremy Cunningham - The Weather up There 7.5
Jeff Parker - Suite for Max Brown* 7
The Heliocentrics - Infinity of Now 7
Drive-by Truckers - The Unraveling 7
Mob Tactics - Eject EP 7
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - Texas Sun 7
RATBOY - GOVERNMENT VACATION EP 6.5
Poppy - I Disagree 6.5
Tame Impala - The Slow Rush 6.5
En attendant Ana - Juillet 6.5
Squarepusher - Be up a Hello 6.5
Squirrel Flower - I Was Born Swimming 6.5
Moses Sumney - grae: part 1 6.5
Green Day - Father of All Motherfuckers 6
Tortuga - Deities 6
King Krule - Man Alive! 6
Pinegrove - Marigold 6
Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline 6

Not listed but heard: 24 albums that I have no wish to further slag off but *spoiler!* the Eminem album is included in this grouping.

On first listen, I'm giving The Secret Sisters - Saturn Return a risky 8.5, some wondrous country harmonies there.

Only other album I've heard in the past week to match my above list is ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - X: The Godless Void and Other Stories, which is presently a 6 between Tortuga and King Krule.

Most of these are fairly high, but mostly because I tend to avoid music I'm pretty sure I'm not going to like. For explanations, check out the 2020 albums discussion thread.

1. U.S. Girls – Heavy Light (8)
2. Beach Bunny – Honeymoon (8)
3. Cornershop – England Is a Garden (7)
4. Tennis – Swimmer (7)
5. Drive-By Truckers – The Unraveling (7)
6. Soccer Mommy – Color Theory (7)
7. Alexandra Savior – The Archer (7)
8. Algiers – There Is No Year (7)
9. Nadia Reid – Out of My Province (7)
10. Riz Ahmed – The Long Goodbye (7)

Other 7s: Green Day, Halsey, James Hunter Six, Moon Hooch, Bill Fay, Pinegrove
6s: Grimes, Stephen Malkmus, Eminem, Porridge Radio, Caribou
4: Code Orange

A new personal #1 has been brewing for a while-- I expected it to be Dark Matter but it's actually Les Amazones d'Afrique - Amazones Power, which I'm compelled to bump up to a 9.

Sightless Pit - Grave of a Dog 7.5 (between Paradise EP and Top Tier). Not quite CALIGULA but similar territory for Lingua Ignota, just more industrial and dancier, strangely enough.

Shabaka and the Ancestors - We Are Sent Here by History 7.5 (between There Is No Year and 20/20 Vision). Sons of Kemet/The Comet Is Coming saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings' other band dealing more in cool/trad jazz than whatever you call the modern electronic jazz hybrid of his day job, which I prefer to this but it still has its moments of exhilaration.

Swamp Dogg - Sorry You Couldn't Make It
Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott - Manchester Calling (both
7 between Mystic Familiar and Suite for Max Brown)

I somehow missed ranking Obongjayar - Which Way Is Forward? a few weeks ago but it's a 6 between Deities and X.

Hello, everybody! Here is an update on the rankings. I use a weighted average formula that takes into account several things:
1. The amount of albums you have rated, the more, the higher your weight
2. The variety in ratings, the more varied your ratings, the higher your weight.
Here are the top 20:
1 | Wire | Mind Hive
2 | Soccer Mommy | Color Theory
3 | Dan Deacon | Mystic Familiar
4 | Makayla McCraven | We're New Again
5 | Porridge Radio | Every Bad
6 | Pinegrove | Marigold
7 | Bill Fay | Countless Branches
8 | Moon Hooch | Life on Other Planets
9 | Tame Impala | The Slow Rush
10 | Algiers | There Is No Year
11 | Caribou | Suddenly
12 | Katie Gately | Loom
13 | U.S. Girls | Heavy Light
14 | Moses Boyd | Dark Matter
15 | Grimes | Miss Anthropocene
16 | Kiwi Jr. | Football Money
17 | Alexadnra Savior | The Archer
18 | Sløtface | Sorry for the Late Reply
19 | Jeff Parker | Suite for Max Brown
20 | Destroyer | Have We Met

Edit: I changed the formula to make a low rating worse than no rating, as before albums with more ratings had a much higher score than albums with fewer ratings.

Here's some more of mine.

4/10
Disq | Collector
An indie rock band doing everything indie rock bands have been doing for a long time but without originality or interesting music. The lyrics are very bad and do not reveal a nice amount of teenage naivité (as I read in some review), but rather the weak songwriting abilities of the band. The two best songs are an instrumental („Fun Song 4“) and a song that‘s able to overcome the weaknesses of its lyrics by its solid guitar work („I Wanna Die“). Not recommended.

Quetzal Tirado, Sam Watson & Alex Wlach | Új Európai Zajongások
A short EP (11 minutes) consisting of two cover versions: György Szabados‘s „Nyugatra fúj a fekete szél...“ and Ornette Coleman‘s „Lonely Woman“. It‘s self-released so the engineering seems a bit off (particularly the percussion sounds rather hollow). The most enjoyable part is Tirado‘s saxophone, but it does not enough to save this for me.
Favorite track: „Lonely Woman“

5/10
Lauv | ~how i‘m feeling~
This is supposed to be a concept album. Each of the 21 songs is supposed to represent one of six facets of Lauv‘s character (he obviously watched the movie Inside Out). An idea like that sounds easy but is hard to pull off and he doesn‘t really succeed mostly because he never goes beyond the boundaries of easy-to-swallow pop which isn‘t inherently bad but doesn‘t work over 66 minutes. Even with 21 songs he can‘t fill the long runtime. The songs themselves aren‘t all bad (well aside from „I‘m So Tired...“), but don‘t provide enough substance to warrant this length. He deals with different subject matters including things like loneliness and sadness but never seems interested into actually exploring them. I‘m glad he doesn‘t use big electronic breaks as bridges cause that‘s one of the most annoying trends in recent pop music (it can be done well of course, but most artists can‘t do it well). The instrumentation provides mostly the background for his vocals which are solid but nothing to get excited about. Favorite track: „Drugs & the Internet“

Pearl Jam | Gigaton
I haven‘t heard enough of Pearl Jam‘s discography to judge how this shapes up with their former releases (Ten and Vitalogy are certainly better), but this sounds just like a collection of generic rock songs without much interesting happening, which is not a lot for a length of 57 minutes. The songs themselves aren‘t bad, they‘re just not good, maybe with the exception of the first three tracks, especially „Dance of the Clairvoyants“.

6/10
Funk Shui NYC | SharkNATO on a Plane
I listened to this because the title is wonderfully weird. The music itself is big band music, very influenced by funk with a strong rhythm section. Half of the tracks are original compositions, the other half are covers from people like Jack Elliott, the Gershwin brothers (the standard „Summertime“), but also Cream („I Feel Free“) and George Harrison („Blue Jay Way“). The title may make this seem like a joke, but these are serious musicians who know what they‘re doing. It‘s a pleasant listen, but nothing I would want to return to. Favorite track: „Rock Bottom“

Stephen J. Malkmus | Traditional Techniques
Favorite track: „Shadowbanned“

Nap Eyes | Snapshot of a Beginner
Songwriter and vocalist Nigel Chapman starts the first track with the line: „Nigel, you‘re so scared“ and sets the tone for an album that‘s very much about the personal state of mind, though many people may relate to his experiences of not being able to articulate one‘s emotions and feeling uneasy about one‘s own indecisiveness. Chapman isn‘t a great vocalist in the technical sense; he doesn‘t have a lot of range, but that‘s not important. He has a very pleasant voice and he proves he‘s able to carry a tune. The rest of the band uses the typical instruments: a guitar, a bass and drums, although some other instruments come in at certain points. The music overall is of a calmer nature, flowing along with an occasional guitar solo (most prominently in „If You Were in Prison“ which also features very simplistic lyrics that seem very funny to me).
To come back to the lyrics: There‘s a certain playfulness to what he‘s singing, most notably in „Mystery Calling“ which includes a verse starting with „Just procrastinate / All I do“ and continuing with „la-la-leigh“. There‘s also a song about Mark Zuckerberg (called „Mark Zuckerberg“) and one about The Legend of Zelda („Dark Link“, with synthesizer). However, some of the texts seem rather constructed (maybe they‘re intended to be), but it throws me a bit off. They also have a bit of a problem holding the tension on the eight-minute-long „Real Thoughts“.
Favorite track: „Primordial Soup“

Brian Fallon | Local Honey
Favorite track: „You Have Stolen My Heart“

The Weeknd | After Hours
The album is built almost symmetrically. There‘s a middle part with songs with a heavier subject matter than the other songs (basically from „Snowchild“ to „Faith“). With heavier, I mean mostly drug abuse. The rest of the songs, the ‚frame‘, if you want to call it that, does tackle the same theme but it seems to me not in the same way. In the middle part, his almost obsessive whining (I don‘t know how else to call it right now, sorry) to his lost lover, about how everything is his fault, which is present on most of the other tracks, misses for the most part.
Generally I‘m not a big fan of The Weeknd‘s way of singing because it seems rather monotonous to me; it works for individual songs (especially „Heartless“ shows his vocals off pretty well) but over a longer period it‘s in danger of becoming annoying. The best thing about this album is undoubtedly the production. It‘s a good synth-heavy, modern R&B album.
Favorite track: „Hardest to Love“

Waxahatchee | Saint Cloud
Favorite track: „St. Cloud“

Baxter Dury | The Night Chancers
Nice synth-pop melodies with pleasant female vocals providing the chorus, while Dury himself speaks (it‘s really more speaking than singing) the lyrics of the verses in a deep voice. There‘s a certain dry humour to the lyrics. It also doesn‘t overstay its welcome; 30 minutes is a good length for it. Just the whole „Baxter loves you“ in the final track throws me a bit off.
Favorite track: „Samurai“

Dua Lipa | Future Nostalgia
Favorite track: „Physical“

7/10
The Chats | High Risk Behaviour
An album with 14 songs that just falls short of 28 minutes running time. The Chats are an Australian punk rock band who make garage punk music full of nice riffs and funny lyrics that don‘t concern themselves with anything of major importance. The album is just downright fun.
Favorite track: „Dine N Dash“

Arca | @@@@@
Technically this is supposed to be a single with a length of 62 minutes. The style changes rather frequently and often abruptly, so I like to think of it as an album with only one track. Arca cuts together different sounds to create a disturbing soundscape. At one point there‘s insane laughter, at another whispering, but most of the track functions without vocals. Sometimes it sounds like shattering glass, sometimes like sounds from a video game. It‘s definitely an interesting electronic album with a lot to unpack.

Sorry | 925
Favorite track: „Right Round the Clock“

Irreversible Entanglements | Who Sent You?
A jazz quartet with trumpet and saxophone, a lot of percussion and Moor Mother reciting poetry.
Favorite track: Blues Ideology

Just a reminder to everybody that the formula I used gives each user a weight based on their variaty of ratings and the amount of ratings they've made. Right now, that weight looks like this:
Schüttelbirne | 0.197
TheLastEnemy | 0.146
Cold Butterfly | 0.143
spiritualized | 0.134
mileswide | 0.113
Holden | 0.096
Rocky Raccoon | 0.093
ArcadeFire | 0.052
madzong | 0.026
If you add more ratings, your weight goes up and your ratings have a bigger input to the overal formula, so keep adding ratings!

Here are some more my ratings. I haven't listened to Fiona Apple's new album, but I plan on doing so (I'm always two weeks behind). On the same day she released her album, Rob Luft released his new album, which was highly anticipated and was incredibly well received. I haven't seen a single bad review, but for jazz music there are generally less reviews than for pop/rock/R&B/rap music. Also, sources like Metacritic seem incredibly biased against non-popular music.

9/10
Rob Luft | Life Is the Dancer
Favorite track: „Life Is the Dancer“

8/10
Childish Gambino | 3.15.20
Favorite track: „53.49“

7/10
Nine Inch Nails | Ghosts V: Together
Favorite track: „Hope We Can Again“

6/10
The Strokes | The New Abnormal
Favorite track: „At the Door“

5/10
Cornershop | England Is a Garden
Favorite track: „St Marie Under Canon“

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs | Viscerals
Favorite track: „Crazy Blood“

4/10
Anna Burch | If You‘re Dreaming
Favorite track: „Tell Me What‘s True“

3/10
Empress Of | I‘m Your Empress Of
Least horrible track: „U Give It Up“

Everything worth a 6 or more in my eyes since last time N.B. I've only heard the Fiona Apple & Enter: Shikari albums once each all the way through, so scores and positions could well fluctuate:

Alien Nosejob - Suddenly Everything Is Twice as Loud (upgrade from 8 to 8.5)

Chapelier Fou - Méridiens* 8.5
Laura Marling - Song for Our Daughter 8.5
Enter: Shikari - Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible 8.5
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters 8
(all between Alien Nosejob and NOISIΛ)

Octave Noire - Monolithe* 7.5
Melt Yourself Down - 100% YES 7.5
(both between There Is No Year and We Are Sent Here by History)

Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela - Rejoice 7.5 (between Dan Deacon and Swamp Dogg)

Brownout - Berlin Sessions 7
Jasper Hølby - Planet B* 7
Everything Is Recorded - FRIDAY FOREVER 6.5
(all between Texas Sun and GOVERNMENT VACATION)

Zuzu - How It Feels EP 6.5 (between GOVERNMENT VACATION and Poppy)

Nadia Reid - Out of My Province*, which is below X as the lowest ranked 6, which means:

King Krule - Man Alive!
Pinegrove - Marigold
Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline
are all downgraded from 6 to 5.5
All I got inside is vacancy!

I've never shied away from giving low scores on Biggest Fan, so I don't know why I've been reluctant to do the same here. At the same time, a lot of the below aren't outstandingly bad, they just haven't clicked with me. Anyway, here's all my ratings this year under a 6 in order!

Cadet - The Rated Legend 5.5
Man Alive!/Marigold/The Neon Skyline (already scored as 5.5)
Code Orange - Underneath 5.5
Degs - Letters from Ndegwa 5.5
Bohren & Der Club of Gore - Patchouli Blue 5.5*
Intranaut - Fluid Existential Inversions 5.5
Pigs x7 - Viscerals 5.5

Jadakiss - Ignatius 5.5
Porridge Radio - Every Bad 5.5
Tech N9ne - ENTERFEAR 5.5
Kvelertak - Splid 5.5
The Orielles - Disco Volador 5
Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud 5
Mats Gustafsson - Worn.Kissed 5*

Ingrid Andress - Lady Like 5
Baxter Dury - The Night Chancers 5
Lychgate - Also sprach Futura EP 5
Christine and the Queens - La vita nuova EP 5
Lanterns on the Lake - Spook the Herd 5*
TORRES - Silver Tongue 5 (on a not really relevant note, I've since heard TORRES' 2015 album Sprinter, which I enjoyed a lot more; noisy guitars suit her better)
Mare Cognitum & Spectral Lore - Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine 5
R.A.P. Ferreira - Purple Moonlight Pages 5
Ben Watt - Storm Damage 4.5
Bill Fay - Countless Branches 4.5
Tha God Fahim - Lost Kingz 4.5*
Grimes - Miss Anthropocene 4.5
La Roux - Supervision 4.5
The Weeknd - After Hours 4.5
Childish Gambino - 3.15.20 4.5
Serpent Column - Endless Detainment EP 4.5
070 Shake - Modus Vivendi 4.5
MIKE and Jadasea - Old Earth EP 4.5 (if it counts? It's one 11-minute track made up of about 4 distinct movements)
Soccer Mommy - color theory 4
LOLA - The Sleeping Prophet EP 4
Mac Miller - Circles 4
Caribou - Suddenly 4
Bonny Light Horseman - Bonny Light Horseman 4
Gang of Four - This Heaven Gives Me Migraine EP 4

Cask - Surviving on Borrowed Time 2.5
Drakeo the Ruler - Free Drakeo 2.5
The Word Alive - Monomania 2.5
TheHxliday - Broken Halls EP 2

Other albums worth 6 and over:
U.S. Girls - Heavy Light 7.5 (between Mystic Familiar and Rejoice)
Sorry - 925 6.5 (between The Slow Rush and Juillet)
Gorillaz feat. slowthai and Slaves - Song Machine Episode 1 EP. Similar to Old Earth EP, I have doubts about calling it anything more than a song since it consists of Momentary Bliss and 3 awkward skits. I'll place it as the last of my 6s.

Still need to listen to Ghosts VI another time at least to give it a fair mark what with it being all instrumental and less immediate than much of the above.
All I got inside is vacancy!
