362. X - We're Desperate: 9.5 (now #582 on my all-time list)
Love the jagged melody here, love the off-kilter dual vocals, X were really cool.

Thanks!

No punk today, but a track from a classic. Although this is one of the few songs from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot to not rank on AM:

363. Wilco – Radio Cure
Year: 2002
Album: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Biggest Fan: Nassim (#50)

I can see why this was so high on a list. Very gorgeous song from an album I really should listen to.

Wilco – Radio Cure: 6

Believe it or not, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is among a select group of albums from the AM top 100 I have not yet heard. In fact, I haven't heard a single Wilco album, even though theoretically I should love their work. But their songs, which I have heard plenty by now, never connect with me deeply, although like today's pick they are usually fine.

The two I'd recommend to convert you are "If I Ever Was a Child" if you want a simple song and "Impossible Germany" if you want next level guitar shreddage.

I know Impossible Germany quite well, as it was part of the 2000's song poll here. I usually love next level guitar shreddage, but somehow the song did little for me. The only Wilco I know that stands out for me is Jesus, Etc. I'll give them another chance in the future, through complete album listening, but it'll have to wait, because I have roughly 159 forum polls to contend with.

My margins are much lower. I honestly could see any song I'd give at least a 7/10 a potential all-time contender.

It seems like I like Robyn much more when she is singing with Röysköpp. I loved Monument, of which this almost sound like a sort of first try or prelude. Seriously, this one seems always on the verge of changing into the later song. As such it is very good, but I still wish I was listening to Monument instead.

Without doing this on purpose, I have about twice as many 9's as 10's. and twice as many 8's as 9's, and twice as many 7's as 8's, and twice as many 6's as 7's. So it is like a pyramid. This breakdown makes perfect sense to me.

The Format - Time Bomb: 6/10

I didn't expect to see this song outside the confines of my post about local music lists. I especially don't have a night life anymore, but anyway it's amusing to think of power pop as having been part of the scene here (going by the one song I know by this band). It bounces along fine; the best thing by far is the piano.

Just about keeping up with all the poll listening, but I'm determined not to fall behind

356. Ray Baretto – Pastime Paradise: 5 it is fine, but I prefer the original
357. Ne-Yo – Beautiful Monster: 6 catchy / better than I expected
358. O Rappa - Minha alma (A paz que eu não quero): 6.5 takes a few listens
359. Merle Haggard and the Strangers – Here In Frisco: 4 not my genre
360. Gorillaz – Don’t Get Lost in Heaven: 5 forgetable track from very good album
361. Bad Brains – I and I Survive: 6.5 unoriginal mellowed out roots reggae for easy listening, strangely charming
362. X – We’re Desperate: 6 better in the context of the album
363. Wilco – Radio Cure: 5 Hard to say why Wilco rarely do much for me
364. Röyksopp, featuring Robyn – The Girl and the Robot: 7.5 For some reason I like 20th century Robyn better than 21st century Robyn

Merle Haggard and the Strangers - Here in Frisco 6 I've never understood why Haggard came to be seen as more of a country outlaw in later years other than his private life (and it's not as if he didn't have competition in this respect), what I've heard of his music is purely establishment Nashville. That said, I do have a weakness for hokey country and it doesn't get much hokier than this!

Gorillaz - Don't Get Lost in Heaven 5 Completely on the same page with spiritualized as this, you're left wondering when it's supposed to start.

Bad Brains - I and I Survive 8 This is an utter genre exercise but after listening to it more, I like the details, like the hints of dub echo about halfway through and the choppy ska guitars. The drummer gives it some welly too.

X - We're Desperate 7 The vocal interplay hides the feeling that the track doesn't really go anywhere. Not that it needs to, its dingy charm goes far.

Wilco - Radio Cure 4 Jeff Tweedy's most serious case of The Bends on YHF, the reason I ranked it last on an album I've still yet to warm to.

Röyksopp feat. Robyn - The Girl and the Robot 6 Sleek, Moroder-style beat and synth line but Robyn still seems more at home when she's chronicling conventional relationship problems.

The Format - Time Bomb 5 Feels like a verse and a chorus too long for its attempts at ELO/Queen revivalism.
All I got inside is vacancy!

367. Kari Jobe – Revelation Song: 4

Hardcore religious music can be a challenge to the unbeliever. If the music is outstanding I don't necessarily mind it, but Revelation Song has no other intend than, well, praising God. The melody doesn't reach all that great highs. Jobe's voice is admittedly beautiful and the only thing of worth for me here, but even that has a kind of cleanliness to it that you inevitably find when people turn saintly. And the lyrics, well, nobody pretends that they were written to please atheists.

Not actually a believer myself, but I have been exposed to a fair amount of contemporary worship music (some of which is also on my prospective 2010s song list). I don't note live versus studio versions when ranking -- as the main site similarly doesn't really note live versions of songs -- but my ranking was based moreso on a live version I heard from YouTube. Sometimes a studio version can seem antiseptic in comparison.

360. Gorillaz – Don’t Get Lost in Heaven Back when Gorilaz was all about the classics. This one, however, is one of the songs from the first two albums that I like the least. 6.5/10
361. Bad Brains – I and I Survive The chorus is excellent... and so is the rest. The guitar comes at the right time. A great discovery. 8/10
362. X – We’re Desperate melodic punk that's easy to listen to. 5.5/10
363. Wilco – Radio Cure the singing annoys me a bit, it's a pity, I like the chords. 5.5/10
364. Röyksopp, featuring Robyn – The Girl and the Robot Nope. 2/10
365. The Format – Time Bomb the chorus, which I think is bad, spoils the whole thing, which is still nice. 5/10
366. Global Communication – 4:14 It's not easy to rate a song like that, not unpleasant, but I feel like I've heard it 10,000 times in video games. 5/10
367. Kari Jobe – Revelation SongHmmmmm... pfffff... blrblrlblrlblrblr... mouais! 5/10
368. Mama Cass – It’s Getting Better6.5/10

The beginning of the year begins slowly!

^ I learned a little French today
Mouais is a way of expressing uncertainty in an affirmative way. It might be translated as "Yes, but I'm not sure", or "Kind of".

Global Communication – 4:14 6 This feels like it needs time to burrow into my psyche, which it hasn't after 3 plays. Still suitably calming.

Kari Jobe – Revelation Song, on the other hand, refuses to leave my consciousness after I tried to seek out a live version to do it justice. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3dZMBrGGmeE and https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8-Gxjtd6Wp4 are what I found. I'll opt for the second of these as it's a slightly more intimate atmosphere and you can sense how powerful the song is for the audience. Both retain the sanitised feel of the original, though, so I can't give this any more than a 4.

Mama Cass - It's Getting Better 7 This has the same warm glow of a Motown single, if not quite as timeless. The chorus is winningly hopeful as well.
All I got inside is vacancy!

Although Mama Cass has done more powerful vocals I still like this one a lot. It just feels like pure, unfiltered sunshine and it's got a very fine melody.

It wasn't a real big hit, but I did hear it a few times when it was current. Probably around this week below on WMCA. I don't think WABC ever played it. Those were the 2 Top 40 stations in New York then.
