Forgot to add the Grammy AOTY nominees (and the Latin Grammys), and somehow completely overlooked the Mondosonoro list from last week (I need to add Decibel as well). These will all be in the next update (likely by the end of this week, at the rate the lists are coming in).

I suspect this first update is also the last in which we see Bruce Springsteen in the top 10. Always fun, these oddities that pop up when using only a few lists.

There always seems to be a few albums that perform on critics list much better than their album review (Arctic Monkeys last year?). Springsteen certainly fits the mold to be this year's surprise. My pick would be The Comet is Coming as most likely to drop off.

I'm always happy to see how closely this mirrors Megacritic, even in this early stage with 6 of the current top 7 spending significant time at or around the top 10. Still a lot more to come in, but this looks like a decent preview of how it'll end up.

Man - it's been trending this way for the last half decade but women are just owning the men this year - lose the female singer-songwriters and R&B talents alone and this list is cut in half. Funny thing is I like most of the big female singer songwriters efforts from this year, but prefer them almost in reverse - Designer's my fav, then Crushing, then Remind Me Tomorrow, then Titanic, U.F.O.F, Two Hands, Norman Fucking Rockwell, and All Mirrors slot in together a notch below.

However as much as women are crushing it - three female records on this list I really cannot stand - the new Brittany Howard, Ariana Grande's Trap Crap fest thank u, next, and bored silly by the new Jenny Lewis.

For me on year it's really Purple Mountains and Dogrel way out in front in 1-2 positions and then everything else - good to see both are at least tracking.

I totally understand any Ariana bashing, and I can see how someone might be bored by the Jenny Lewis, but what's wrong with the new Brittany Howard? It's one of the most exciting, well-produced, and incredibly-sung releases of the year, in my view.

I can see how Howard's vocal style and outsize personality might be an acquired taste for some. I've always found that a little Howard goes a long way, and while Jaime (which I just listened to for the first time last night) is a fascinatingly diverse, innovatively arranged, and obviously deeply personal album, I confess that I also ended up kind of glad it was only 35 minutes.

If this holds this might be my favorite critics' top ten of any year this decade. Glad to see Weyes Blood and Sharon Van Etten deserving crushing it. I'm surprised Ghosteen is number one even if it did have the highest average review score of the year; I expect NFR! will end up number one (especially considering its performance on end of decade lists). I also think FKA Twigs will rise into the top 5 or so when it's all said and done; its November release probably hurt it in these early lists.

While The Comet is Coming probably will fall (similar to Sons of Kemet last year), it would be fun if it doesn't!

Spoiler alert: NFR! is indeed already starting to run away with this thing; I can't envision it not staying at #1 for good. I'll post an update Friday.

As for All Mirrors, I agree. She tries to be Swans and Beach House at the same time, and while I won't say it is impossible to do, Olsen failed. I mainly chalk it up to bad mixing. The album isn't bad, but it is overrated.

Yeah, Lana will definitely not drop from the top spot.

Bruce is one of the few old rock acts that critics continue always giving some love.
Billie higher than Sharon and almost surpassing Weyes OK :|
The rest of the list will be something.

A big factor in why the album is doing so well, I think, is that Springsteen is actually taking a step away from his meat-and-potatoes comfort zone here - the arrangements are lush without (in most cases) being overly slick, and almost Jimmy Webb-esque at times ("The Wayfarer" may be the most purely gorgeous track he's ever done).

Yes, it is bad. It makes you and evil person and having a different opinion than the consensus should be forbidden by law.

No, of course it isn't bad. Still, concerning these three albums you are very wrong :P
Tastes may vary as they will, but I feel this is the strongest top 3 (or even 10) in years.

This comment enticed me to listen to it, and I'm surprised at how much I like it! Between the old guys, I certainly enjoyed this more than Nick Cave.

Unless things have shifted, I believe 2015 was the first year to have women even hit 50/50, with last year being the first where there were more albums by women than men (if we include Low and Beach House partially).

So, yes, this is the first year where women are clearly receiving more acclaim at the highest levels.

One of the disadvantages of releasing an album out in December, especially late December. My guess is that some sources probably won’t even put him on their list because of the 2018 release. It’s been near the top of every list that I have seen it on though.

If you added the points of both Big Thief albums and counted them as one release, they would be exactly tied with Magdalene for third place and just slightly above Angel Olsen. This really speaks to just how dominant the top four releases are this year.

Hey, a quick question.
The Independent's list is by two authors. Is it no longer required to have a minimum of three critics?

Did not realize there were only two. Their 2010s list was compiled by five critics, so it was eligible. I will remove this one from the next update and put another UK list in its current column. Thanks for catching that!

I was going to post Evening Standard's list at the very moment but it was made by two critics too, so when scrolling down to see the last update I read The Independent and I thought I remembered seeing two authors lol

I'm fine with The Independent's list as long as it's not by a single author. I mean come on it's The Independent, a reputable critic.

The results at the top are fascinating. If Ghosteen was doing just a little better in U.S. lists (it's #9 right now), it would likely be #1 right now; it's the #1 album everywhere else. NFR! is on top because, in addition to its overwhelming lead in the U.S., it's #2 everywhere else.

Thank you for the update. Just some thoughts:

Top 10 seems to be fairly consistent through the updates
Still 8 of the 10 are either female performers or bands with prominent female vocalist
I’m surprised Elbow hasn’t made top 100. Personal view I know but I consider it is a return to form for them and I thought as strong as The Nationals latest My only thought is that The National work takes more risks and that earned them brownie points with critics and reviewers
