The Replacements - Little Mascara: 7
Thanks to the Moderately Acclaimed albums game this year I quite got to like the parent album, Tim, and Little Mascara is quite typical of its pleasures, with it simple approach, good lyrics and memorable guitar riffs.

I'm shocked to learn that Hymie doesn't like this dissonant, avant-gardish, disruptive, glitchy, electronic song!

Oneohtrix Point Never - Ezra: 5

Then again, I have heard better from Oneohtrix. Sometimes they create truly transcendent music; hear the experiment is main meal. That is allowed and the album is Garden of Delete, so I was warned. But I feel only the last 'movement' of the song.

Yo La Tengo – My Little Corner of the World: 7

Last time we got a very relaxed song by Yo La Tengo, from the same album. This time they are still relaxed, but also super sweet. It feels like a butterflies-in-the-stomach song and life is good.

Whitney Houston – You’re Still My Man: 1
I never expect anything good to come from Whitney Houston - one of those artists who seems to be the antithesis of my taste. But it was only when the intro began that I noticed in what deep trouble I found myself. From second one this is schmaltz of the worst kind: extremely sentimental yet with a corporate feel to it and a cleanliness to every feeling that gives me the impression that everyone had to leave their actual emotions at the door. So it is just waiting until Houston inevitably yells the whole second half. Some people are impressed by the range of her voice, but I only hear the emptiness. Sorry, this is all not very nice, but songs I give a 1 are not nice to me either.

Elvis Presley – You’re the Devil in Disguise: 7
Like I said I expected this to have more votes. I always liked this one. Some criticasters said that Elvis didn't really rock anymore after, say, Jailhouse Rock, but although this doesn't have the spontaneity of the Sun Records this is an energetic hip swinger, with for this period rare lyrics with some nasty bite.

Roy Harper – Twelve Hours of Sunset: 5
This song is slow. Very, very slow. Every moment gets drawn out. Since I know this is a singer songwriter who can write great lines I want to concentrate on what he says, but in this case to no avail: the length between sentences, words or even the words themselves make it though going. I know this guy likes to take his time frequently, but here it becomes something of the undoing of the song, despite the appeal of it's hazy, somewhat psychedelic-in-the-seventies style.

Every now and then we get something that is just really obscure. If my information is correct Frankie Allen has released only one single of which this one is the a-side. Luckily YouTube has it, but otherwise many sources deny this artist’s existence (Discogs had some barren information). A real Christmas present to unpack with you family tonight!

348. Frankie Allen – Just a Country Boy
Year: 1977
Released as a single

340. Haddaway – Fly Away But what is this horror? The worst of just about everything in one song. 1/10
341. The Dukes of the Stratosphere – My Love Explodes I really thinks it's from the 60s, it's very good, more than this please 8/10
342. The Replacements – Little Mascara An average song from a good band. 5/10
343. Oneohtrix Point Never - Ezra I let that tune flatter my ear. It's a strange but pleasant mixture. 6.5/10

I know you probably don't dislike them for the same reason, but it is an odd sentence to read, as Dylan's approach to music, lyrics and singing is pretty much the exact opposite to Whitney Houston.

Frankie Allen – Just a Country Boy: 6

A tribute to Elvis. There are so many of them that they might be a genre unto themselves (this isn't even the first one to appear in this game: see Gillian Welch' Elvis Presley Blues; a much better song in my opinion). It is nice to have this one come along a few days after we actually did an Elvis track. This one, in contrast to the one by Welch, feels very much like an Elvis song on itself and with a release date of 1977 it has to be one of the first posthumous tributes to the King. The rockabilly shuffle and the doo-wop backing vocals win no originality points, but they work, while the poor production value has a Sun Studios charm.

Indeed, it's just that absolutely all the songs I've heard from them sound so awful and I don't understand their huge success. It's another mistery for me about the music.
To tell you the truth, I still refer to Dylan through songs like Lay, Lady Lay.

I have great admiration for bilingual speakers...one side of my family tree is Czech, and can you imagine the utter confusion I feel when I look at a couple words like České Budějovice. I'm sure I'd speak or spell that one more wrong than you would get Santa Claus wrong...

Santa's Dutch, Rob can spell his countryman any way he wants!

Will catch up on lost songs when I can but for now, Nirvana - Stay Away gets a 6. I'm never particularly besotted by Cobain's laryngitic vocals but you can tell there's some craft amongst the carnage and that's a peach of a bassline from Novoselic.
All I got inside is vacancy!

Sorta, he is based on "our" Sinterklaas, but they have become separate entities in our culture, attached to different celebrations. Santa Claus is "Kerstman" (literally Christmas man) here. I think the spelling went wrong because there is also the completely unrelated English word "clause". A clause saint would be something.

Catch-up time:

Buddy & Ella Johnson - Bring It Home To Me: 5
Not bad, but I'll probably have forgotten about it in a few days.

Hank Williams - Mind Your Own Business: 7
Hank Williams always work for me. He rarely has big favorites, but there is something in his delivery that catches the attention.

Nirvana - Stay Away: 6
Now this sounds like grunge doesn't it. For better and usually worse, it doesn't get more nineties than a guy yelling "God is gay" on the top of his lungs. It does get the energy across, that is for sure, but I miss the real angle that sets the best of Nirvana apart.
