An Album a Month

Post by acroamor »

A fun idea I thought of earlier today would be to list a top album for each individual month of the 2010s. 10 years, 12 months each, for a total of 120 albums. I'll be going by the best release date I can find for any release, will probably exclude any compilations in this reckoning.

Anyone else feel free to join in!

I'll start with 2010!

Jan 2010: Beach House - Teen Dream
Feb 2010: Yeasayer - Odd Blood
Mar 2010: Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
Apr 2010: MGMT - Congratulations
May 2010: LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
Jun 2010: Eminem - Recovery
Jul 2010: Best Coast - Crazy for You
Aug 2010: Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Sep 2010: Sharon Van Etten - Epic
Oct 2010: Taylor Swift - Speak Now
Nov 2010: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Dec 2010: Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy Soundtrack

I found quickly that some months are stacked (Teen Dream vs. Contra, The Archandroid vs. This Is Happening) and others where I had to struggle to find a release I liked. Granted, 2010 was my least listened to year of the decade, so that's bound to happen.

Right up my street, this! I'll cheat and work my way backwards as 2010 is also sketchy for me, I've got a few more albums in that year to listen to before I get to that point:

Dec '19 Maybe Kanye West - JESUS IS BORN? Probably not to be fair
Nov '19 Chat Pile - Remove Your Skin Please EP (now my #14 album of the year)
Oct '19 Kim Gordon - No Home Record (now #4 for the year, despite me never having got into Sonic Youth)
Sep '19 Kojey Radical - Cashmere Tears
Aug '19 Kano - Hoodies All Summer
Jul '19 Lingua Ignota - CALIGULA
Jun '19 Kate Tempest - The Book of Traps and Lessons
May '19 Amyl and the Sniffers - Amyl and the Sniffers
Apr '19 Fat White Family - Serfs Up!
Mar '19 Little Simz - GREY Area
Feb '19 Xiu Xiu - Girl with Basket of Fruit
Jan '19 Better Oblivion Community Center - Better Oblivion Community Center

All clear choices but March, then August-October seemed a lot to choose from (PSYCHODRAMA, The Center Won't Hold, FIBS and The Afterlife EP being the hardest to leave out) while I had to go relatively far down my list for February and May. Hope I haven't ruined this by going in reverse!

If there any handy reference to which albums came out which months? Otherwise this will be hard to do.

Genius is pretty comprehensive for the years it covers but it only started doing an album release calendar in 2016. https://genius.com/Genius-january-2016- ... -annotated

Album of the Year includes the whole decade and shows the covers for each album, unlike Genius, which may make it more user-friendly. However, it does include singles and reissues without necessarily labelling them as such, so tread carefully https://www.albumoftheyear.org/2010/rel ... &genre=all

Both are better than List of [year] albums on Wikipedia, which omits albums you expect to be listed, particularly in later years.

2015
Dec '15 Lizzo - Big GRRRL Small World
Nov '15 Jain - Zanaka
Oct '15 Roots Manuva - Bleeds
Sep '15 Little Simz - A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons
Aug '15 Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss (narrowly beating M3LL15X)

Jan '15 Sleater-Kinney - No Cities to Love

March 2015 was ludicrously acclaimed! The 3 most highly rated albums of the year (2PAB, Carrie & Lowell, Sometimes I Sit...) were all released in March. I wonder if any other months in history can boast this dominance in the EOY stakes...

EDIT: My mistake, wrong Godspeed album, 'Asunder'...was released in March '15 :angry-banghead:

I'm certain if one were to rank each and every month of the decade, December 2010 would be considered one of the absolute lowest scorers overall.

2010
Dec '10 Motörhead - The Wörld Is Yours
Nov '10 Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Oct '10 Crystal Fighters - Star of Love
Sep '10 Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
Aug '10 Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Jul '10 M.I.A. - ΛΛ Λ Y Λ
Jun '10 Against Me! - White Crosses
May '10 Tracey Thorn - Love and Its Opposite
Apr '10 Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
Mar '10 Bonobo - Black Sands
Feb '10 Phantogram - Eyelid Movies
Jan '10 Beach House - Teen Dream

You two weren't lying about December 2010, utterly barren. The previous month had lots of big commercial releases (for the time) but nothing else I had heard or wanted to hear.

By dazzling contrast, May 2010 is surely the greatest month of the decade for albums- LaIO is one that reveals its charms over time and I wouldn't expect it to compete for most listeners with (in order of my preference) The ArchAndroid, Total Life Forever, Cosmogramma, Innerspeaker, Brothers and Crystal Castles (II), phew! There's also First Aid Kit's debut, which I need to hear, and High Violet, which I don't intend to but I know it's highly regarded.

Thanks for the idea acroamor, I enjoyed all that, let's hope the next decade is just as graced with variety and quality but with both characteristics more evenly spread out!
