Agreed. Her 2014 self-titled is this decade’s greatest rock album imo.

Comments:
*Man, that Pitchfork reader's poll wasn't an anomaly, was it? That poll's absurdly front-loaded top 6 represents 6 of the current top 7. This might change as more UK and international lists are added, but somehow I doubt it'll change very much. At any rate, as expected, TPAB and MBDTF are already pulling away from the pack.

*For some artists (Vampire Weekend, Sufjan Stevens) it's always been obvious which of their albums would dominate in these polls. For others (St. Vincent stands out), there's a leader right now but that could easily change. Hands down, for me anyway, the single biggest surprise so far is that Tame Impala's Currents is absolutely annihilating Lonerism. I'm stunned that the latter isn't doing better.

*Going to try to upload the spreadsheet now. If it still doesn't work I'll send it to Henrik to post.

I really do wish that publications would hold off until January to make these lists. Looking at the top 60 and seeing only one 2019 album made it? It's something so clearly inaccurate and so easily fixable by simply waiting and letting 2019 finish out properly.

It puts a smile on my face to see TPAB at #1  I really hope that it stays in that position. I expect it to enter among the top 100 all-time albums once the next update of that sort comes around.

Tame Impala : Currents, Lonerism
Lorde : Melodrama, Pure Heroine
Taylor Swift : Red, 1989
Lana Del Rey : Norman Fucking Rockwell!, Born To Die
St. Vincent : Strange Mercy, St. Vincent
Grimes : Visions, Art Angels

Kinda excited to see which album from these artists will be selected by critics :music-guitarred:

More examples where it seems critics are picking just one of several possible albums

Angel Olsen : Burn Your Fire for No Witness, My Woman, All Mirrors
Sharon Van Etten : Tramp, Are We There, Remind Me Tomorrow
Julien Baker : Sprained Ankle, Turn Out the Lights
Mitski : Puberty 2, Be the Cowboy
Spoon : They Want My Soul, Hot Thoughts
Titus Andronicus: The Monitor, The Most Lamentable Tragedy
Big Thief : Capacity, UFOF, Two Hands
Julianna Barwick : The Magic Place, Nepenthe
Waxahatchee : Cerulean Salt, Out in the Storm
Julia Holter : Loud City Song, Have You in My Wilderness, Aviary
Death Grips: Exmilitary, The Money Store, No Love Deep Web, their whole discography really, but those first three in particular
Tyler, the Creator : Flower Boy, IGOR, although seeing one list with Goblin was a fun surprise
Parquet Courts : Light Up Gold, Sunbathing Animal, Human Performance, Wide Awake!!!
Sturgill Simpson : Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, A Sailor's Guide to Earth

Plenty more I'm forgetting

It would save you both more time figuring out what artists on the spreadsheet don't have two decently-received albums released in the last decade.

True. There are definitely some artists though that have released multiple well-regarded releases where one of them clearly is getting substantially higher placement than the others. I think of Kacey Musgraves with Golden Hour, LCD Soundsystem with This Is Happening, Solange with a Seat at the Table, Bowie, Arcade Fire, FJM, etc.

I'm surprised that Teen Dream is doing so well. And even better with that new Noisey list as well.

A shame that Swans and Sun Kil Moon are being almost completely ignored - whether you like Gira and Kozelek or not they put out some of the best stuff this decade.

I'm surprised that we aren't seeing more critics picking Kacey Musgraves for Same Trailer Different Park.

I prefer Pageant Material of all her albums and I consider Merry Go Round her best song overall, which is getting forgotten as well.

77 / Young Thug, Birdman, & Rich Homie Quan / Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1
78 / The National / High Violet
79 / Chance The Rapper / Coloring Book
80 / Japandroids / Celebration Rock
81 / M83 / Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
82 / Danny Brown / XXX
83 / Ariana Grande / Sweetener
84 / Fever Ray / Plunge
85 / Jay-Z & Kanye West / Watch the Throne
86 / Billie Eilish / When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
87 / Big Thief / U.F.O.F.
88 / Various Artists / Hamilton: Original Broadway Soundtrack
89 / Ariana Grande / thank u, next
90 / Young Thug / Barter 6
91 / Lorde / Pure Heroine
92 / Gorillaz / Plastic Beach
93 / Flying Lotus / Cosmogramma
94 / The Knife / Shaking the Habitual
95 / Janelle Monáe / The ArchAndroid
96 / Grouper / Ruins
97 / Weyes Blood / Titanic Rising
98 / Shabazz Palaces / Black Up
99 / Angel Olsen / My Woman
100 / Destroyer / Kaputt
101 / Haim / Days Are Gone

Agreed that The ArchAndroid is shockingly low so far. Hopefully that will change.
My biggest takeaway - the emergent hip hop/poptimist-centered sensibility that came to the fore this decade and has overtaken the airwaves and most music festivals has finally overtaken the critical establishment as well, even though it's old rock-oriented guard held out the longest.

A lot of great titles here, but to my tastes inconceivable to have a top 100 of past decade that includes dreck like Thank You Next or that god awful Rosalia album but is without Car Seat Headrest's Teens Of Denial, Parquet Courts Light Up Gold and Wide Awake, Swans The Seer and To Be Kind (though in today's hyper woke culture I know there's another reason Swan's ain't on the list), Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest, Future Island's Singles, War On Drugs Lost In The Dream, Jason Isbell's Southeastern, Sun Kil Moon's Benji and so on and so on.

This is going to bring a huge shift in acclaim's rankings over the next ten years - look for a lot of beloved titles in the all-time top 100 to start falling down, down, down.

End Old Man Rant at List (there's a great Simpson's meme on this)

Agreed on Car Seat Headrest and Parquet Courts. I do feel obligated to point out that Lost in the Dream (#38) and Halcyon Digest (#53) are, in fact, on the list right now (although HD is way too low). Also obligated to point out that there are a lot of lists to come, and some of these discrepancies may be addressed (although the overall trends will undoubtedly continue).

I just wish 2019 was not ignored so much. I see that some of these albums still have to find a place on our collective mind, but a decade list that largely ignores one whole year just feels off. Another reason why these lists tend to come in way too soon.

I have the impression, with the first lists, that there will be a big difference of opinion between the USA/UK lists and the rest of the world, right?
Much more Hip-hop oriented for the first ones and Indie for the second ones, it seems to me?

TPAB and MBDTF are running away with it.

Any chance of both albums making the top 50 of all time?

MBDTF maybe. I don't see TPAB rising all the way over there cos there hasn't been many all-time lists that rank it high. I'm skeptic about MBDTF too actually.

Unless Henrik adjusts the formula so that EOD alone can make 2010s albums rise on AM over albums of other decades.

Anyone else puzzled by Atrocity Exhibition being somewhat forgotten? I seem to remember it getting a lot of attention in 2016 and i'd say is certainly one of the 100 best of the decade (if not higher).

For the songs list, there are not many changes in the top 100, so I’m hoping another list will come in the next few days.

I've been focusing on the EOY albums spreadsheet. I'll try to post an update before the New Year, but no guarantees.

Rosalia is 97, and there's no Spanish lists yet, so "El Mal Querer" will be going up.

I hope so. Right now is the only non-English album and it’s on the verge of falling outside of the Top 100.

What has really struck out to me is the reappraisal of Born To Die. During this century, we’ve seen albums such as Discovery and 808s & Heartbreak get reassessed as masterpieces years after their original release, but those albums where initially released to a mostly positive, but albeit not “mind-blowing” critical reception. Although I may be wrong, Born To Die might be the first case of an album this century which is getting reappraised as a masterpiece years after being critically panned upon release. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and AllMusic all gave the album a negative review when it first came out - the album still has a 62 on Metacritic, which is okay but not what you’d expect from an “acclaimed” album. While the reappraisal of once-hated albums was not uncommon in the last century, we’ve seen in somewhat decline in this era. Personally, i don’t care much for Born To Die, and find it to be mediocre aside from tracks such as “Video Games” and “Summertime Sadness”, but I think it’s somewhat interesting that this particular album is getting reassessed.

I don't think there's been much reassessment to be honest. Born to Die is currently no. 35 based on placing in a small handful of 'best of decade' lists, many of whom possibly didn't even review it in 2012. Stereogum doesn't review albums, did Noisey even exist in 2012, it wasn't in Pitchfork's decade list, and Slant/NME both praised the album at the time (it was in Slant's top 10 of 2012). As for The Independent, it's one of the least cared-about British newspapers. I think the negative reviews at the time were rather harsh anyway, a lot of the media assumed Lana Del Rey would disappear within a few months and when she didn't they scrambled to change their patronising view of her.

Disappointing that Mojo and Uncut won't be doing a decade list. Would have been a welcome change from the same pattern the vast majority of music outlets have been using for their EODs.

How did you know that? Did they hint it?

It is pretty confirmed that they will get another list from The Music (Australia) and Q Magazine (no way they don't do EOD list for album since we've already got the songs one).

Not explicitly but they're both into their February issues and have gone into 2020 previews. I figured they would have done their EOD by now if they intended to. Also, doesn't mean anything, but I asked them both on twitter like a month ago if they're going to do it and ... radio silence. Meanwhile Film Comment promptly replied to stay tuned and they delivered ;)

I'd be happy to be wrong but really they don't look like it.
