Albums and Songs of 1989 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Come one, come all to the poll that will celebrate the yellowest decade of them all, the 1980s! :happy-partydance:

We've reached the last year of the decade, 1989! Let's celebrate the year that ushered out the 80s with a bang!

Image

A few things remain the same with the decade poll, and a few things will be different.

What will remain the same is that I will ask you to post ranked lists of your favorite albums and songs of each year. Keeping with recent tradition, the top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final, and albums and songs in the 11-20 range will become eligible to be "wildcard" entries. At the end of the 10 yearly polls, the top 50 of the 100 candidates will qualify for the finals based on a new wildcard point system:

Wildcard points = (Yearly points)/(number of ballots)

The biggest change is the point system. Your ranked albums and songs will be assigned points using the following formula:

300/(rank + 2)

Moreover, I will assign points to all of your ranked entries, not only your top 15. Lists must have a minimum of 5 albums and songs to be eligible, but feel free to come up with extended lists if you like - every ranked album and song will receive points!

The deadline for your 1989 lists is 11:59pm forum time on November 30th.

Formatting:

It would be helpful to me if you could use the same delimiter between your rank and the artist as you use to separate the artist from the album/song. Something like 1 | Janet Jackson | Rhythm Nation 1814 works great!

Eligibility:

Any song (including a re-recording of an older song) is eligible if it was released in 1989. I will use the following hierarchy to determine eligibility:

1. AM
2. Discogs/RYM
3. Wikipedia

If you include a song or album you think is questionable, it would help me if you could indicate the source it comes from (album/EP/single).

And we're off!

1989 was the year I really got into music as a wide-eyed 8/9 year-old, so it's full of nostalgia for me. I spent hours keeping lists of MTV's Top 20 Countdown, making my very first lists of favorite songs, and collecting my first singles and albums, on cassette!

2. Happy Mondays – WFL (Think About The Future mix)
As you voted for "WFL" in the 1988 poll, I can't count this one, but everything else is good to go.
It was with the "Think About The Future" mix the song was "ready" (imo) so it's a different version. Have not followed any discussion of rules but my gut feeling is the 89 version is the one to be counted. The same with Eric Clapton's "Old Love" that has an inferior studio version and later a classic live version. Both left out of my first 15 songs.

87. Black Box - Everybody Everybody

118. Jethro Tull - Some Day the Sun Won't Shine For You
I can only find sources of 1990 for "Everybody Everybody". Do you have a source for 1989?

The Jethro Tull one is a mystery. The original seems to be from 1968, and while there are plenty of live versions, the closest I can find to 1989 is from 1992. Is there some other version I'm not aware of?

I'm combining different versions of songs across years, but each user is only allowed to vote for one version of the song. If you prefer the 1989 version, I can delete your vote for the 1988 one. Let me know.

God, I have so much nostalgia for 1989-90. You could throw Bingoboys in there and extend the party!

Oh my haha... Austria's Bingoboys, Netherlands' Twenty 4 Seven and Germany's Mysterious Art ---- NO ONE'S SAFE NO MOA NOT YED NO OUIAY --- how many Sweepstakes Rons want us to go away right now... but yeah.... 1989 was the first pop year of my life and therefore the first line of all lines... Roxette, Fine Young Cannibals, Don Johnson, Paula Abdul, Jive Bunny, Susanna Hoffs, Adeva, Martika, Ice-T, Robin Beck, Camouflage, Biz Markie, The Beautiful South... I still dance to the last amounts of echoes of them and Bobby McFerrin...

Although there are albums from other years in the decade that I like better than the top ones for 1989, for sheer numbers of albums and songs I enjoy, both ones I already knew about and the ones that I've discovered from other forumer's lists, from RYM and from purposeful listening to genres I'm less knowledgeable about (dance/electronic, rap, country) it looks like this will be my largest list.

To keep it being unwieldy, I plan on capping my rankings at 300 with the rest listed as "Also" as I've seen (Moonbeam?) do and a separate alphabetical listing of songs I just found this month.

Currently I have 389 songs ranked and another 57 newbies but I have around another 100-150 to check out so I anticipate ending up around 500 tunes.

Totally '80s: The 1989 Batman film, influenced by Frank Miller and Alan Moore comic books, reset the character in pop culture from "boy scout Batman" in Super Friends and Scooby-Doo, and from the campy Adam West show. "Boy scout Batman" was never heard from again, although the Brave and the Bold cartoons would place dark Batman in generally lighter situations (even a Scooby-Doo reunion). Adam West *was* heard from again, significantly cast as Bruce Wayne's childhood hero in The Animated Series episode "Beware the Gray Ghost." (As for Miller and Moore, among their other '80s comics accomplishments, Miller's overhaul of Daredevil was reflected in the Netflix show; and Moore's Watchmen just became an HBO show.)

I'm not sure yet! Normally, it would be the 1970s, but the 2010s could also be done as the decade will have finished. I know some people have said they want to wait until 2021 to do the 2010s, but the way these polls work, I think enough time would have passed by the time we get to the later years - the 2019 poll would be done in November, 2020, which I feel is enough time to let those releases settle.

Personally, I'd rather do 70's then '60's then pre-'60's and wait until 2023 to do 2010s but I realize I'm more patient in my old age than many here. Doing the 2010's in 2020 would put us in line to do the same decade again 4 years later.

Just a notion I wanted to throw in the ring to see if anyone else agrees.

Thanks!
