The music of Pierre Perret captured the lives of the French working class with uncommon precision. A supremely gifted lyricist renowned for his mordant wit and playful eroticism, his songs employed everyday slang to startlingly poetic effect. Born in Castelsarrazin on July 9, 1934, Perret spent a sizable chunk of his adolescence in his father's restaurant, Le Café du Pont, absorbing the street-smart patois of the local workers who comprised its core clientele. At the same time, he studied music theory and saxophone, and later attended the Toulouse Conservatoire. Beginning in 1953, Perret served a three-year term in the French military. Assigned to the army music corps, he began writing his first songs, and during a subsequent stint playing guitar in support of aspiring singer Françoise Lô (later known as Sophie Makhno), he occasionally performed his own material in between sets. In time Perret came to the attention of agent Emile Hebey, who introduced him to label owner Eddie Barclay. His debut single, "Moi J'Attends Adèle," was released in 1957, but despite a regular presence on the Paris nightclub circuit, most notably an extended residency at the Colombe on the Ile de la Cité, the record failed to catch on.

After a 1958 tour of Africa and France in support of the immortal American R&B vocal quintet the Platters, Perret was diagnosed with pleurisy. He spent the better part of two years in a sanatorium, writing the songs that comprised his 1960 debut LP, Le Bonheur Conjugal, but sales were again middling and Barclay terminated his contract. Perret resurfaced on Vogue in 1963 with "Le Tord Boyaux" ("Rot Gut"). The single proved a blockbuster hit, selling more than 100,000 copies and establishing the acerbic wit that would remain the hallmark of his lyrics for the duration of his career. A series of follow-up hits including "Trop Contente" and "La Corrida" culminated with 1966's "Les Jolies Colonies de Vacances," the biggest and most beloved French pop song of its year. That November, Perret headlined his first performance at the famed Olympia Theatre, returning two years later to cut a live album. After co-starring in Claude Autant-Lara's 1969 feature film Les Patates, Perret resumed his music career with 1971's "La Cage aux Oiseaux." His biggest hit to date, 1974's "Le Zizi" ("The Willy") sold more than five million copies, but in the years to follow his music grew more thoughtful, with 1977's "Lily" winning the Prix de la Ligue Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme for its attack on racism.

Perret subsequently explored suburban malaise ("Y'a des Gosses Dans l'Escalier"), abortion ("Elle Attend Son Petit"), and famine ("Riz Pile"), and spent much of the 1980s channeling his energy into books, most notably Le Petit Perret Illustré par l'Exemple. In 1983 Perret traveled to China, the inspiration behind the album Comment C'Est la Chine? In 1987, he published a cookbook, Au Petit Perret Gourmand, and continued work on a three-volume update of The Fables of La Fontaine written in contemporary slang. He did not release a new LP until 1992's Bercy Madeleine, returning a year later with Chansons de Toute une Vie, a compendium assembling 250 of his songs. The 1995 release of Anthologie de la Chanson Érotique was overshadowed by the death of Perret's youngest daughter, Julie, and after more than a year out of the limelight, he resurfaced in late 1996 with an extended stay at the Casino de Paris, recorded for a subsequent live album. That same year, he also earned the Grand Prix de la Chanson Française and published a book on the art of eating titled La Cuisine de Ma Femme.

Perret finally returned to recording with 1998's La Bête Est Revenue, a blistering meditation on the rise of the far-right French National Front. 2002's Cui-La continued to tackle weighty themes such as globalization, but on 2006's Mélangez-Vous he returned to the playful wit of his early work. During the next few years, as well as a children's album, Pierrot Chante pour les Gamins, he released a trio of records which were decidely not for children: Le Plaisir des Dieux (2007), Les Dieux Paillards (2008) and Trésors de la Paillardise (2009) collected the bawdiest and most lecherous of French songs and bore the legend "Oreilles chastes s'abstenir" ("Chaste ears should abstain"). In 2010 he returned to a more politicized style with the album La Femme Grillagée, which spoke out against the maltreatment and subordination of women.

Song:
In the mid-1970s, Pierre Perret became known in France as a comic singer through a few popular hits (Les Jolies Colonies de vacances, Le Zizi). In 1977, he published Lily, a song about racism and the integration of foreigners that marked a shift towards more committed songs. It thus highlights the situation of immigrants who are victims of violence and discrimination.

Lily tells the story of a woman who came from Somalis (now Djibouti) with other immigrants "who all came voluntarily to empty the garbage in Paris". Losing her illusions, she courageously faced racism and emigrated to the United States where she faced the same difficulties, and found some comfort in Angela Davis.

Pierre Perret came up with the idea for this song after attending a conference of the latter in New York. When he began writing the song, France still favoured economic immigration. In 1977, when Lily was published, France put an end to economic immigration three years ago in favour of family reunification, at the initiative of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.

According to Pierre Perret, the song earned him many letters of insults. He received the "1978 Peace Prize" from the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism.

The League for Human Rights selects Lily for the book Hundred Poems Against Racism published in 1992. The singer Barbara pays tribute to Pierre Perret in her singing tour at Le Châtelet in 1993, by taking Lily back to the piano voice.

The song's text, which has become a "classic", was presented at the 2005 Technology Baccalaureate early test.

On May 6 and 7, 2011, "La fête à Lily", an anti-racism event held in the Bas-Rhin region, was launched with simultaneous interpretation of the song by Pierre Perret and nearly 1,500 people at 18 sites.

Eths (stylized as eths) was a French heavy metal band from Marseille.

Staif joined by Greg, formed the band What's the fuck in 1996. The following year, Candice joined the band which was renamed Melting Point. In 1999, Guillaume joined the group after having left his earlier group Shockwave. Six months later, Roswell joined. The band was complete. The band first called themselves "Hets".The members then decided to change their name to Eths after realising Hets sounded like the English word heterosexual.

The band is often on tour around France, Switzerland, Belgium, Portugal and Brazil. They have made several maxi CDs, the most famous is Samantha. The band also released its first full-length album, Soma, in 2004.

Eths' music features heavy, hard guitars and drums. Their song lyrics are inspired by Candice's painful childhood.

Eths tours and distributes albums under the Coriace label. They became famous in France, appearing on the cover of Rock Sound No. 141, and they often play with bands like Lofofora, Fantômas, Machine Head, Skindred and Element.

On June 27 of 2006, Eths wrote an official statement on their website, announcing the departure of Guillaume and Roswell for “different points of view”.

The remainder of the band announced that they were on good terms and that they were working on a new album being produced by Fred Norguet. 15 pieces were written and the vocals composed on half of them. Pierre of Lofofora performed drums on the album and their label Coriace dealt with the bass. The album was released in the Spring of 2007 in France, and in March 2008 for the rest of the world.

On June 28 of 2009, Eths performed at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. Later on July 31 of 2009, Eths performed at Wacken Open Air in Germany. Of January 9 of 2010 Eths announced that they were writing their next album, called III which will be released April 6, 2012, with the songs Gravis Venter and the lead single Adonaï released beforehand.

On September 18, 2012, frontwoman Candice Clot announced her departure from the band due to family commitments and personal reasons. Virginie Goncalves of Kells and Nelly Wood replaced Clot as temporary touring vocalists.

In April 2013, the group announced Rachel Aspe as their new frontwoman. In the same month, it was announced that guitarist Grégory "Greg" Rouvière had departed the band due to an injury and personal issues. Yom left the band in April 2015 to be replaced by KA drummer R.U.L as the group head to the studio to record their 4th album.

On November 30, 2016 the band announced via Facebook they were breaking up

Actor and singer Patrick Bruel became one of France's biggest stars, first making his name as a teen idol in the '80s, then leading a return to traditional French chanson in the new millennium. After making his big-screen debut as a teenager in Le Coup de Sirocco, his recording debut, "Vide," arrived in 1982. It was his second studio LP, 1989's Alors, Regarde, that first took him to number one in France; he would return to the spot in each of the next three decades. A strong touring draw, Bruel has released a number of live albums along the way, including the chart-topping Si Ce Soir... in 1991. It included his sole number one single, "Qui a le Droit..." He traded his earlier matinee-idol pop for more guitar-centric rock & roll on 1994's Bruel, and experimented with South American and North African influences on 1999's Juste Avant, finding chart success with both. He changed things up again in 2002 with Entre Deux, a double album of classic French chanson. By then in his fifties, Bruel had his sixth number one album with 2012's Lequel de Nous, and in 2013 he became a César-nominated actor for his portrayal of Vincent in the 2012 film Le Prénom (aka What's in a Name?). Bruel is also known as a world-class professional poker player who has worked as a TV commentator in France.

Bruel was born Patrick Benguigui in Tlemcen, Algeria, on May 14, 1959. His father abandoned the family when Patrick was only a year old, and in 1962, after Algeria won its independence, his mother moved to France, settling in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil. A fine soccer player in his youth, Patrick first settled on the idea of being a singer after seeing Michel Sardou perform in 1975. As luck would have it, acting would bring him his first success; first-time director Alexandre Arcady ran an ad seeking a young man with a French-Algerian (or "pied-noir" in French slang) accent for his film Le Coup de Sirocco. Benguigui (as he was still called) auditioned and won the part. The following year, he spent some time in New York City, where he met Gérard Presgurvic, later to become his primary songwriter.

Returning to Paris, Bruel appeared in several films, television shows, and plays, and cut his first single, "Vide," in 1982. It failed to attract much attention, but his next effort, "Marre Cette Nana-là" ("Enough of That Chick"), was a substantial hit in 1984. A follow-up, "Comment Ça Va Pour Vous" ("How's It Going for You"), also found success in 1985. Bruel released his debut album, De Face, in 1986 and reached the Top 40 of France's album chart. After several more film appearances and a live recording made at the Olympia, Bruel recorded a second studio album, Alors Regarde, in 1989. Paced by the smash hit "Casser la Voix" ("To Break the Voice"), the album made Bruel a superstar in Europe and Canada, and would eventually go on to sell over two million copies. Bruel embarked on a sold-out tour; throngs of screaming teenage girls packed his concerts, leading the French media to dub the phenomenon "Bruelmania." A second live album, Si Ce Soir..., was culled from the tour.

For his third studio album, 1994's Bruel (aka Bruel 3), Bruel tried to move away from his heartthrob-balladeer image by delving into guitar-oriented rock & roll, as on the single "Bouge." A third live album, On S'était Dit, was recorded during the supporting tour in 1995, spawning the Johnny Hallyday-penned single "Pour Exister." The Spanish-language collection Plaza de los Heroes helped break him in the Spanish and South American markets that year. Bruel subsequently took some time off from recording to concentrate on acting, as well as international concert appearances. A skilled poker player, he also joined the World Series of Poker tour, winning the world championship in the Limit Hold 'Em event in 1998. Bruel finally returned to the studio and completed his fourth proper album, Juste Avant, in late 1999. It found him beginning to experiment with international influences from South America and North Africa. Supported by heavy touring in 2000, the album was a hit, reaching number one in France and Belgium. It was followed by the double-live set Rien Ne S'efface.

Bruel had previously covered classic French chansons, usually in concert, but in 2002, he jumped into the style with both feet. The double studio album Entre Deux ("Between Two," i.e., between the two World Wars) featured 23 selections from the golden age of French cabaret pop, and found him working with a wide array of guest stars, including Johnny Hallyday and Charles Aznavour. Born in Paris in 1950, blues harmonica player Jean Jacques Milteau first discovered the harmonica in the mid-'60s while listening to rock albums by artists such as Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.
A heavy interest in the blues ensued and, later on a trip to America, Milteau became enthralled with the traditional blues of artists such as Little Walter, Charlie McCoy, and others. In the late '70s, Milteau decided to devote his entire career to performing music and began making various gigs around Paris, performing with such high-profile artists as Charles Aznavour, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Yves Montand, and others.
It wasn't until 1989 though that Milteau released his solo debut, Blues Harp. Since then, Milteau added writing to his resumé, including various harmonica method books, and released his share of albums in Europe and toured extensively. Milteau released the Tennessee-recorded Memphis in 2003.

American expatriate Joe Dassin was one of France's most popular singers during the late '60s and '70s, initially building his name with stylized adaptations of folk and country material from his birthplace. As his career blossomed, Dassin turned increasingly to traditional-style chansons penned by some of the genre's best writers, scoring an all-time classic with his 1975 smash "L'Eté Indien." Notorious for his perfectionism, Dassin could play the introverted romantic, but his persona also played off of American archetypes and imagery. His premature death of a heart attack in 1980 robbed French pop of one of its greatest modern-day practitioners.

Joseph Ira Dassin was born November 7, 1938, in New York City. His father was future film director Jules Dassin, and his mother was Hungarian violinist Beatrice Launer. In 1940, the family moved to Los Angeles to further Jules' highly promising directing career; however, it was interrupted when he fell victim to the McCarthy-era blacklist. Moving to Europe in search of work, the family lived a migratory existence for a time, and finally settled in Paris in 1950. Joe's parents divorced in 1956; stung, he returned to the United States and enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he studied medicine and anthropology. In his free time, he worked as a radio DJ, and began singing folk songs and Georges Brassens compositions around the area with another French-speaking student. After returning to France, Dassin worked some low-level jobs in the film industry, including a few small parts in his father's movies; he also worked in radio and wrote freelance articles for Playboy and The New Yorker.

In late 1964, at the urging of his future wife Maryse, Dassin made a demo recording for CBS France that turned some heads; soon, the label made him its first French signer. His debut single was "Je Change un Peu de Vent," an adaptation of the American folk song "Freight Train" with additional lyrics by Jean-Marie Rivat (who would become a frequent Dassin collaborator). It flopped, as did two EPs released in 1965. However, 1966's "Bip Bip" -- an adaptation of John D. Loudermilk's "Road Hog" -- was a hit, and CBS subsequently teamed Dassin with one of France's top producers, Jacques Plait. Minor hits in "Ça M'avance à Quoi?" and "Excuse Me, Lady" followed, but Dassin's career really took off when he was tapped to host the inaugural MIDEM music festival at Cannes in 1967; well covered by the French media, it gave him crucial exposure. Not long after, Dassin collaborated with Jean-Michel Rivat and Frank Thomas on an original work, the gunfighting-cowboy ballad "Les Dalton." Dassin had intended to give the song to another singer, but recorded it himself at Plait's vehement insistence; the result was a breakthrough smash hit, one that made Dassin a genuine star. His deep, charismatic voice and good looks made him highly popular with female audiences, but his American roots also lent him a certain novelty, a link to the free open spaces and flower-child optimism of his native country.

Dassin had further success in the late '60s with hits like "Marie-Jeanne" (a version of Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe"), "Siffler sur la Colline" ("To Whistle on the Hill"), "La Bande à Bonnot," and "Le Petit Pain au Chocolat." He suffered a minor heart attack in 1969, but recovered to make a triumphant appearance at the Olympia in Paris later that year, and scored his biggest hit yet with "Les Champs-Elysées," an international smash that broke him across Europe. Further hits followed in 1970 with "L'Amerique" and "Cécilia" (the Simon & Garfunkel song), both adapted by legendary French songwriter Pierre Delanoé; he and Claude Lemesle gradually replaced Rivat and Frank Thomas as Dassin's primary suppliers of material. "La Fleur aux Dents" and "L'Équipe de Jojo" were successes in 1971, and the following year, amid heavy international touring, Dassin bought a second home in Tahiti.

1973 started well for Dassin, as "Le Moustique" and "Salut les Amoureux" became enormous hits. Sadly, though, his wife gave birth to a premature son who died not long after; always moody and private anyway, Dassin sank into a deep depression that effectively stalled his career for over a year. He recovered his momentum in late 1974 with the singles "Si Tu T'appelles Melancolie" and "Vade Retro," and in 1975 he scored the biggest hit of his career, the French pop classic "L'Été Indien" ("Indian Summer"), which was adapted by Delanoé and Lemesle from an Italian song ("Africa," by Albatros). "L'Été Indien" kicked off probably the most successful period of Dassin's career; over the next two years, he landed smash after smash, including "Et Si Tu N'existais Pas," "Salut," "Ça Va Pas Changer le Monde," "Le Jardin du Luxembourg," and "À Toi."

Dassin divorced his wife in 1977 and married his new girlfriend early the next year. His first child was born later in 1978; by that time, disco had begun to take over the French music scene, and a new generation of pop singers were also making their presence felt. Dassin kept pace with "Si Tu Penses à Moi," a disco-reggae adaptation of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry," but although his international tours continued to sell out, the momentum of his recording career began to falter somewhat. He performed at the Olympia for what proved to be a final time in 1979; by the end of the year, his second marriage was on the rocks, and he suffered a heart attack. Early in 1980, not long after the birth of his second child, Dassin's marriage officially broke up. With his personal life in turmoil, and feeling the pressure for a comeback hit, Dassin suffered a heart attack that summer; while in the hospital, he also underwent surgery for a stomach ulcer. Nonetheless, Dassin attempted to make his way to his second home in Tahiti for a break from the pressure. During a layover in Los Angeles, Dassin suffered yet another heart attack; still, he pressed on with the journey. On August 20, 1980, while dining in a restaurant in Papeete, Tahiti, Dassin suffered a final, fatal heart attack; he was not quite 42 years old.

Songs such as Tranche de vie, L'alternative, Rachel, Participe présent impose him as one of the militant voices of that time. He participated in the music of Gébé and Jacques Doillon's film, L'An 01 in which he made an appearance.

Shortly before his death, François Béranger recorded an album dedicated to the repertoire of Quebec singer Félix Leclerc (the disc will be published after his death). He last performed in Paris in September 2002 at Le Limonaire. His last appearance on stage took place at La Cigale, during a Sanseverino concert. The latter, who had recorded and performed Le Tango de l'ennui, had invited him on stage to sing this classic from his repertoire.

He died of cancer at home at the age of 66.

On October 17, 2003, after a funeral in the parish of Saint-François de Montpellier, he was buried in the family vault in the cemetery of Champ Juvénal de Castelnau-le-Lez.

Henri Constant Gabriel Pierné (16 August 1863 – 17 July 1937) was a French composer, conductor, and organist.

Gabriel Pierné was born in Metz in 1863. His family moved to Paris after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).

He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.

His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties).

He made a few electrical recordings for Odeon Records, from 1928 to 1934, conducting the L'Orchestre Colonne, including a 1929 performance of his Ramuntcho and a 1931 performance of excerpts from his ballet Cydalise et le Chevre-pied.

He died in Ploujean, Finistère, in 1937.

Music:
Pierné wrote several operas and choral and symphonic pieces, as well as a good deal of chamber music. His most famous composition is probably the oratorio La Croisade des Enfants based on the book by Marcel Schwob. Also notable are such shorter works as his March of the Little Lead Soldiers, which once enjoyed substantial popularity (not only in France) as an encore; the comparably popular Marche des petits Faunes is from his ballet Cydalise et le Chèvre-pied. His chamber work, Introduction et variations sur une ronde populaire, for saxophone quartet is a standard in saxophone quartet repertoire.

The debut album release from L'Epee, the band of Emmanuelle Seigner (Ultra Orange & Emmanuelle), Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), Lionel and Marie Liminana (The Limiñanas). It is very rarely that a musical project lives up to the billing of being a "supergroup".

However, the exception to this rule comes in the shape of L'Epee. A stellar combination of the talents of The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Anton Newcombe, cinematic femme fatale Emmanuelle Seigner and ice-cool pop provocateurs The Limiñanas, L'Epee transcend artistic and traditional borders.
Far from being defeated by a world seemingly regressing into turmoil, L'Epee's strength comes from a long history of challenging the status quo -- they all share a fierce intelligence and an outsider aesthetic which, over the decades, has been sharpened to a razor's edge. Fitting, then, that their name translates as "The Sword".
This pent-up creative energy has been channeled into their extraordinary debut album, Diabolique. Named in tribute to Mario Bava's 1968 cult classic Danger: Diabolik, it's a musical masterclass where elements of garage, ye-ye, sleaze rock, cult soundtracks, sci-fi, spaghetti westerns, and girl-group pop noir are combined with the cut-and-thrust zeal of a band bursting with ideas and energy. All delivered by Emmanuelle in a sultry Gallic drawl which will send a frisson of recognition through anyone familiar with her iconic roles in, among many others, Frantic (1988), Venus In Fur (2013), and Bitter Moon (1992) (all directed by her husband, Roman Polanski). Satisfied with the results, the trio flew to Berlin to hook up with Anton and Andrea Wright at his Cobra Studio in Berlin. Gong are an international progressive rock band that incorporates elements of jazz and space rock into their musical style. The group was formed in Paris in 1967 by Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth. Franck Pourcel - Chariot - 1961

Franck Pourcel (14 August 1913 – 12 November 2000) was a French composer, arranger and conductor of popular music and classical music.


Born in Marseille on 11 August 1913, Pourcel started learning the violin at the age of six. Later, Pourcel studied violin at the Conservatoire in Marseille, and also drums because he loved jazz, and spent a year in Paris at the Conservatoire.

By 1931, he was working as a violinist in several theaters in Marseille, marrying Odette eight years later. He then became the musical director for Lucienne Boyer, with whom he went on a world tour.

He immigrated to the United States in 1952 but returned to France the following year to record "Blue Tango" and the follow-up "Limelight". In 1954, Pourcel recorded his first album on the Pathé-Marconi record label, with whom he would record a total of nine albums in a three-year period. In 1956, he recorded his version of "Only You", which sold over three million copies by 1959, and was awarded a gold disc. It peaked at #9 on the United States Billboard pop chart during a 16 weeks chart run.

Between 1956 and 1972, he was the conductor for France at the Eurovision Song Contest with the exceptions of 1957 and 1968. Four of the songs that he conducted won first place for France. As a result, France became the most successful country in the contest's early years, until Luxembourg matched its four wins in 1973.

By 1958, Pourcel started recording classical music. His series of Pages Célèbres led him to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra, The Society of Concerts for the Conservatoire, The BBC Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, and the Lamoureux Orchestra at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In 1961, he co-composed with Paul Mauriat the hit "Chariot", which was recorded by Petula Clark and followed up by Peggy March as "I Will Follow Him". The song became the main theme for the film, Sister Act.

In 1975, at the request of Air France, Pourcel composed an anthem for their new supersonic plane, Concorde.

Pourcel recorded 250 albums, over 3000 songs, and he conducted famous orchestras such as London Symphonic Orchestra, BBC Orchestra and Orchestre des concerts Lamoureux. He created the series Amour Danse et violons (54 albums) and the classical series Pages Célébres. His first recordings from 1956 to 1962 were released under the series Originals.

Pourcel recorded until 1995 with EMI. He died on 12 November 2000 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, at the age of 87, from Parkinson's disease. His daughter Françoise Pourcel, is taking care of his musical legacy.

The song was first recorded by Franck Pourcel as an instrumental, and was released in 1961 on the European LP Amour, Danse, Et Violons. No.17 and on an EP on the La Voix de son Maître label. Pourcel co-wrote the song with his friend and fellow French bandleader Paul Mauriat. Mauriat later recorded an instrumental version, which he released on his album Paul Mauriat Plays the Hits of 1976.

In 1963, Percy Faith released an instrumental version, re-titled "I Will Follow You", as the lead song on side 1 of his album titled Themes for Young Lovers. The album spent 28 weeks on Billboard's chart of Top LPs, reaching No. 32, and earned Percy Faith a gold record.

Petula Clark versions
In 1962, Petula Clark released a French language version of the song, titled "Chariot" (lyrics by Jacques Plante), which reached No. 1 in Wallonia, No. 2 in France, and No. 8 in Flanders, and earned Clark a gold record. Her English version reached No. 4 in Denmark, where it was released by Vogue, but failed to chart in the UK and the US, where it was released by Pye and Laurie respectively. Clark also recorded Italian and German versions of the song, with her Italian version, "Sul mio carro", reaching No. 4 in Italy, and her German version, "Cheerio", reaching No. 6 in West Germany.

Little Peggy March version
In 1963, Little Peggy March's version of "I Will Follow Him", backed with "Wind Up Doll", was released by RCA Victor. March's version spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 1 on April 27, 1963 and spending three weeks in this position, making 15-year-old March the youngest female artist to have a U.S. chart-topping single. Her version also reached No. 1 in Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, South Africa, Uruguay, Canada's CHUM Hit Parade, New Zealand's "Lever Hit Parade", and Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart.

Léo Ferré (24 August 1916 – 14 July 1993) was a French-born Monégasque poet and composer, and a dynamic and controversial live performer, whose career in France dominated the years after the Second World War until his death. He released some forty albums over this period, composing the music and the majority of the lyrics. He released many hit singles, particularly between 1960 and the mid-seventies. Some of his songs have become classics of the French chanson repertoire, including "Avec le temps", "C'est extra", "Jolie Môme" and "Paris canaille".


Son of Joseph Ferré, staff manager at Monte-Carlo Casino, and Marie Scotto, a dressmaker of Italian descent from Piedmont, he had a sister, Lucienne, two years older.

Léo Ferré had an early interest in music. At the age of seven, he joined the choir of the Monaco Cathedral and discovered polyphony through singing pieces by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Tomás Luis de Victoria. His uncle, former violinist and secretary at the Casino, used to bring him to performances and rehearsals at the Monte Carlo Opera. Ferré listened to such musicians as bass singer Feodor Chaliapin, discovered Beethoven under the baton of Arturo Toscanini (Coriolanus), was deeply moved by the Fifth Symphony. But it is the sweet presence of composer Maurice Ravel during L'Enfant et les Sortilèges rehearsals that impressed him the most.

At nine years of age he entered at Saint-Charles College of Bordighera, run by the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Italy. He remained there for eight long years of severe discipline and boredom. He wrote about this lonely and caged childhood in an autofiction (Benoît Misère, 1970).

He graduated from high school at Monaco, but his father did not let him attend the Conservatory of Music.

Career:
In 1945, while being still a "farmer" and a Jack-of-all-trades at Radio Monte-Carlo, Ferré met Edith Piaf, who encouraged him to try his chance in Paris.

In April 1947, Ferré agreed to tour in Martinique, which turned out to be disastrous. From the end of 1947 Ferré produced and hosted on Paris Inter station several cycles of programs devoted to classical music. In Musique Byzantine (1953–54), he expanded his topics on aesthetics, such as tonality necessity, exotic melody, opera (the "song of rich people"), boredom, and originality or "marshmallow music".

In 1952, in order to submit Verdi examination at La Scala in Milan, he wrote the libretto and music of an opera called La Vie d'artiste (same title as the song). It transposed his past years' experience into a kind of a black comedy but Ferré did not seem to like it much, finally abandoning it for other projects. He began to sing in larger venues such as l'Olympia, as the opening act of Josephine Baker in 1954. In 1956, Ferré wrote and composed La Nuit (The Night), a ballet with sung sections commissioned by choreographer Roland Petit. It was a violent flop.

From 1960 to 1970, Ferré worked with arranger Jean-Michel Defaye, whose classical skills and taste accorded well with Ferré's musical sensivity. They maintained a steady pace of creation, realizing almost an album a year, sometimes more. This artistic output, including the way Ferré would write for symphonic orchestras after 1970, would have an influence in the English-speaking world over such singer-songwriters as Scott Walker, Martin Newell or Benjamin Clementine.

In March 1968, Ferré did not return at home after a gig. In his absence, Ferré's chimpanzee Pépée suffered a fall and refused to be approached. Eventually, Madeleine asked a hunter neighbour to put the chimpanzee out of its misery. Ferré's requiem for the primate would be his eponymous song "Pépée". The singer blamed his wife for Pépée's death and they would divorce after endless procedures.

In 1969, Ferré settled in Tuscany, in Italy. The huge success of "C'est extra", an erotic ballad, greatly expanded his audience, especially among the French youth, who recognized in the poet the "prophet" of his own rebellion. Backed by this new energy, Ferré began to smash traditional song structures to explore spoken word and long monologues. With a very precise work on the voice (rhythm, speech) and rhetorical writing derived from the prose of poet Arthur Rimbaud, Ferré ritualized his speaking in an incantatory and dramatic fashion.

In 1975 Ferré conducted successively Orchestra of the Institut des Hautes Études Musicales in Montreux, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, and the Pasdeloup Orchestra at the Palais des congrès de Paris. It was a perilous challenge for Ferré, who conducted the orchestra and sang at the same time. He mixed Ravel and Beethoven with his own compositions and reversed the placement of the orchestra. 140 musicians and choir singers were on stage. This was an unprecedented performance, breaking free from conventions and blending separated worlds. Concerts were sold out for five weeks, but critics from the classical music field rejected this hybrid show.

From 1976 to 1979 he toured less. He drifted from his violently declamatory expression of revolt to avoid being typecast.

In 1976, Ferré signed with CBS Records International. Isabelle Antena is a pioneer of bossa nova and samba-inflected nu jazz and electropop. She was a founding member of 1980s French-Belgian synthpop trio Antena, and in the 1990s led another group, the Powaga Sisters, for three albums between 1993-2004. Alongside these projects she maintained a solo music career, selling over a million albums and earning musical acclaim across the globe. As a solo artist Isabelle Antena has found particular success in Japan and the Far East.

Originally Antena were a trio, discovering a sound all of their own on Camino del Sol, combining minimal electro, pop and samba styles. Thanks to producer Martin Hayles, in the summer of 1984 Antena signed a deal with Phonogram, who took a shot at the UK singles chart with "Be Pop". At the same time Isabelle moved to London. The second single, "Life Is Too Short", appeared in November, but did not bring mainstream success and so Isabelle returned to Les Disques du Crepuscule and a solo career. A new single, "Seaside Week End", appeared at the beginning of 1986, closely followed by the album En Cavale. Released early the following year, Hoping for Love saw Isabelle step left of the dance-floor, and expand her Latin, funk and samba palette to include jazz and acoustic stylings.

Ivo Livi, better known as Yves Montand (French pronunciation: ​[iv mɔ̃tɑ̃]; 13 October 1921 – 9 November 1991), was an French actor and singer.

Montand was born Ivo Livi in Monsummano Terme, Italy, to Giovanni Livi, a broom manufacturer, and Giuseppina Simoni, a devout Catholic, while her husband held strong Communist beliefs. Montand's family left for France in 1923 because of Italy's Fascist regime. He grew up in Marseille, where, as a young man, he worked in his sister's beauty salon (Salon de Coiffure), and later on the docks. He began a career in show business as a music-hall singer. In 1944, he was discovered by Édith Piaf in Paris and she made him part of her act.

Montand went on to international recognition as a singer and actor, starring in numerous films. His recognizably crooner songs, especially those about Paris, became instant classics. He was one of the most famous performers at Bruno Coquatrix's famous Paris Olympia music hall, and toured with musicians including Didi Duprat. In October 1947, he sang Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai ? (music by Henri Betti and lyrics by Édith Piaf) at the Théâtre de l'Étoile. Betti also asked him to sing C'est si bon but Montand refused. Following the success of the recording of this song by the Sœurs Étienne in 1948, he decided to record it.

During his career, Montand acted in a number of American motion pictures as well as on Broadway. He was nominated for a César Award for "Best Actor" in 1980 for I comme Icare and again in 1984 for Garçon! In 1986, after his international box-office draw power had fallen off considerably, the 65-year-old Montand gave one of his most memorable performances, as the scheming uncle in the two-part film Jean de Florette, co-starring Gérard Depardieu, and Manon des Sources, co-starring Emmanuelle Béart. The film was a worldwide critical hit and raised Montand's profile in the US, where he made an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman.

In 1951, he married Simone Signoret, and they co-starred in several films throughout their careers. The marriage was, by all accounts, fairly harmonious, lasting until her death in 1985, although Montand had a number of well-publicized affairs, notably with Marilyn Monroe, with whom he starred in one of her last films, Let's Make Love. He was the stepfather to Signoret’s daughter from her prior marriage, Catherine Allégret.

Montand's only child, Valentin, his son by his second wife, Carole Amiel, was born in 1988. In a paternity suit that rocked France, another woman accused Montand of being the father of her daughter and went to court to obtain a DNA sample from him. Montand refused, but the woman persisted after his death. In a court ruling that made international headlines, the woman won the right to have Montand exhumed and a sample taken. The results indicated that he was probably not the girl's biological father.

Signoret and Montand had a home in Autheuil-Authouillet, Normandy, where the main village street is named after him.

In his later years he maintained a home in St Paul de Vence, Provence, until his death from a heart attack in November 1991. In an interview, Jean-Jacques Beineix said, "[H]e died on the set [of IP5: The Island of Pachyderms]... On the very last day, after his very last shot. It was the very last night and we were doing retakes. He finished what he was doing and then he just died. And the film tells the story of an old man who dies from a heart attack, which is the same thing that happened!" Montand is interred next to his first wife, Simone Signoret, in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

He has also worked under the aliases Chill, AKH, Sentenza, and Spectre. He became famous as a member of the group IAM, and has since made a number of records, both with IAM and as a solo artist.

Akhenaton has worked as a producer, producing songs for several French rappers and groups such as Passi, Stomy Bugsy, Fonky Family, Freeman (a fellow member of IAM who has since made his break as a solo artist), La Brigade, Le 3ème Œil, etc. He is the creator of the record label Côté Obscur, the publishing house La Cosca, and the vinyl record label 361.


Akhenaton was born Philippe Fragione in Marseille in 1968, and spent his youth in Plan-de-Cuques, a small village on the outskirts of the city. His family is of Italian origins. His paternal grandmother, Immacolata Scotti, was of Campanian descent, his great-grandfather Francesco Fragione, emigrated from Sperlonga and on his maternal side a great-great-grandfather, Pierre Malano, emigrated from Porte, a great-great-great-grandfather Barthelemy Gionotti, emigrated from Camporgiano and another great-grandmother Maria Lanzarotti, emigrated from Bedonia. In 1981, he discovered hip hop music and started traveling frequently to New York City where he received the nickname "Chill Phil." At about the same time, back in Marseille, he met Éric Mazel, a DJ who would later be known as "Khéops". Mazel and Fragione started working together to advance the cause of French hip hop.

In 1988, Fragione debuted as a hip hop theorist, publishing the essay La deuxième génération du hip-hop (The second generation of hip-hop) in the fanzine Vé. The same year, he appeared on the B-side of the US rapper MC Choice's single "Let's Make Some Noise". Having returned to Marseille, he met Geoffroy Mussard (Shurik'n) and Malek Brahimi (Freeman). Fragione became known as Akhenaton, and together with Khéops and Shurik'n formed the group B.Boys Stance, renamed IAM in 1989. The group was later joined by Freeman, Imhotep and Kephren.

Four of the six members of IAM chose ancient Egyptian names as stage names. Akhenaton converted to Islam from Catholicism. Musicologists argue that Akhenaton and the other members of IAM index the modern Arab world through the use of their names. Instead of overtly pointing out North African countries and the turmoil that has surrounded the contemporary Arab community, the Egyptian names allow the audience to covertly draw parallels between IAM and North Africa.

Instead of focusing on violence and rebellion like many other French rappers, Akhenaton and IAM remain true to their hometown, Marseille. In Marseille rap has reportedly remained relatively peaceful. Akhenaton posits that rappers in Marseille are more socially conscious because they feel a strong sense of community.

After IAM's first three albums' success, Akhenaton released his first solo album, Métèque et mat, in 1995. The album sold 300,000 copies, and it was followed by Sol Invictus in 2001. He began to delve into his other projects, such as producing Passi's album Les tentations (1997) and the 2001 film Comme un aimant. He continued working with IAM, releasing the album Revoir un printemps in 2003 and Saison 5 in 2007.

2) Effeuiller means to remove the leaves or petals from a plant (feuille meaning leaf). I can think of one English equivalent - "defoliate", and find it too technical and prosaic to apply. I was thus stuck with the following variants: "Unwrapping you", "Shedding your leaf", "Stripping you". I had instinctively taken "t'effeuiller" to mean stripping a (you) man of his modest fig leaf, which in my imagination, translates to unwrapping his condom. (Gotta get at that protein)
3) The Dukan diet is a a regiment consisting of mostly proteinaceous foods. For example, trimmed beef, skinned chicken, whole fish, semen.
4) Plat sans résistance (dish without resistance) is a pun on "plat de résistance" (main course).

Artist Biography by Jason Birchmeier
Popular throughout the 1960s and '70s, Marie Laforêt is a French pop singer who garnered fame initially as a film actress during the early to mid-'60s. Born Maïténa Doumenach to parents of Armenian heritage on October 5, 1939, in Soulac-sur-Mer, Aquitaine, France, she made her film debut in 1960 in the René Clément drama Plein Soleil, a big-screen adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Plein Soleil not only launched the acting career of Laforêt; it also made a cinema star of actor Alain Delon.
In the wake of her showbiz breakthrough, Laforêt was offered one role after another, notably beginning with Saint Tropez Blues (1961) and La Fille aux Yeux d'Or (1961). Her onscreen performance of the title song from the former film, "Saint Tropez Blues," essentially launched her singing career while La Fille aux Yeux d'Or, on the other hand, earned her the nickname the Girl with the Golden Eyes.
In the mode of a folksinger, Laforêt's recording career took flight in 1963 in association with the label Disques Festival; among her more notable early recordings was a cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." She made her full-length album debut in 1964 with a self-titled album comprised of her recording output to date.
Successive self-titled full-length albums were released throughout the remainder of the 1960s and were likewise comprised of previously released EP material.
In the 1970s Laforêt more or less abandoned acting and focused instead on a series of recordings released in association with the Polydor label. She had some major hits during this period, most notably "Viens, Viens" (1973) and "Il a Neigé sur Yesterday" (1977).
With the exception of Viens, Viens (1973), the majority of her full-length albums were once again self-titled. Similar to how Laforêt had abandoned acting in favor of music-making during the 1970s, she returned to the cinema in the 1980s and left music behind. A long line of best-of compilations would be released in later years, generally focusing on either her 1960s output on Festival or her 1970s output on Polydor.

Amina Annabi (Arabic: أمينة العنابي‎, Amina Al-Annabi) (born 5 March 1962, Carthage, Tunisia) is a French-Tunisian singer-songwriter and actress, most famous for finishing second in the tied 1991 Eurovision Song Contest, held in Rome. Amina finished second after a countback, scoring equal 146 points alongside Carola from Sweden.

Amina was born into a family of musicians. Her father is French and her mother is Tunisian. Her grandmother was a musician and one of her uncles was involved in setting up the Tabarka Festival in Tunisia, so Amina got the chance to see a number of music stars, going along to concerts by Joan Baez, James Brown and the famous Algerian diva Warda. It was at the Tabarka music festival that Amina would get to meet the young Senegalese star Wasis Diop. They became friends and they had the opportunity to work together some years later. In 1975, Amina and her mother, a talented musician and composer, moved together to Paris.

Three years later Amina formed her own group, after showing her talent in singing and dancing a variety of music styles, from soul to traditional aigypt songs. The group made appearances in many local schools but it was in 1982 when Amina started to build her solo career. By that time she got involved with Radio Nova, Paris' leading radio station in world music. One of the producers of the station was Martin Meissonnier. He started to work with Amina and soon they became a couple—their daughter was born in 1986. In 1983 she won a music contest with a rap song, "Shehérazade", influenced by Arab rhythms. It was released as a CD single. Amina began performing in Paris around this time.


After recording an album with the Japanese musician Yasuaki Shimizu, she became extremely popular in Japan where she even toured in 1987. She did backing vocals on an album by Haruomi Hosono and she launched a career in cinema. In 1989 she played a supporting role in the film Maman and in 1990 she worked with Bernardo Bertolucci for his movie The Sheltering Sky.

The same year she recorded her debut album, Yalil (Night). The album received excellent reviews and it was released in 22 countries around the world. It was also released in the USA where it peaked at #5 at the Billboard world music charts.

In 1991, Amina won 'Le prix Piaf' as Best Female Singer of the Year, then she went on to get involved in Peter Gabriel's peace project during the Gulf War. Joining a host of international stars in the studio, Amina took part in the recording of an EP which featured a new version of Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance". The same year she participated in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Rome with one song of her own, entitled Le Dernier qui a parlé.... She tied with the Swedish participant for the first place but due to EBU's rules, the French entry ranked 2nd and the award went to Sweden.

She read the French jury's votes during the final of Melodifestivalen 2010.

Songhoy Blues is a desert blues music group from Timbuktu, Mali. The band was formed in Bamako after they were forced to leave their homes during the civil conflict and the imposition of Sharia law. The band released their debut album, Music in Exile, via Transgressive Records on February 23, 2015, while Julian Casablancas' Cult Records partnered with Atlantic Records to release the album in North America in March 2015. The group is one of the principal subjects of the documentary film They Will Have To Kill Us First.


In 2012, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) took control of the north of Mali. In turn, they were pushed out by Ansar Dine, a jihadist group which banned cigarettes, alcohol and music. Garba Touré, a guitarist from Diré, near Timbuktu, was forced to leave, and moved to Bamako, the country's capital, in the south. Together with Aliou Touré and Oumar Touré, they formed a band "... to recreate that lost ambience of the north and make all the refugees relive those northern songs." The three of them, unrelated despite having the same surname, are Songhoy people. The name of the band comes from their ethnicity and the genre of music they play, 'desert blues'.


Songhoy Blues began playing on the Bamako club circuit, attracting both Songhoy and Tuareg fans. In September 2013, Africa Express, a group of American and European musicians and producers led by Damon Albarn, visited Bamako to record an album of collaborations. The band auditioned successfully and were introduced to Nick Zinner, the American guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They worked with Zinner to record "Soubour," meaning patience. The track was released in December 2013 on Maison Des Jeunes, the 2013 Africa Express compilation.

Following the success of "Soubour", the band returned to the studio with Zinner and co-producer Marc-Antoine Moreau to work on an album. Their debut album, Music in Exile, was released on Transgressive Records in February 2015 and on Cult Records, via Atlantic Records, in North America in March 2015. It received "universal acclaim" according to the review aggregating website Metacritic. Robin Denselow, writing for The Guardian, described the album as "an impressively varied and rousing set", and named Songhoy Blues "[a] band to watch". In the NME, Kevin EG Perry described the album as "a masterpiece of desert blues; blending American guitar licks with Malian groove".

The band were nominated for "Best New Act" at the 2015 Q Awards and as "Independent Breakthrough Act" at the 2015 AIM Awards. They supported Alabama Shakes at the Beacon Theatre in New York, and were subsequently called "insistent and determined but also headed for the ecstatic" in a review posted by The New York Times They have also supported Julian Casablancas and Damon Albarn and in 2015 appeared at numerous festivals including Glastonbury Festival, Bonnaroo Festival, Latitude Festival, Roskilde Festival and Green Man Festival. In 2016 they played at Byron Bay Bluesfest and WOMADelaide in Australia and Green Man Festival and The Great Escape Festival in the UK. At the Royal Albert Hall for Later… with Jools Holland’s 25th anniversary, they played two songs with tenor saxophone player Tunday Akintan.

Biography:
Apollo Noir is the alter ego of French producer Remi Sauzedde. After growing up in the middle of the deepest French countryside (one would say in the middle of nowhere), a place called « The Black Woods » in Auvergne, Apollo Noir found his way into music playing drums in various Hardcore Punk and Grind bands. Hardcore is always a good way of starting music, a bit like going to the conservatory for classical musicians. During these years as a drummer, Apollo Noir listened to a lot of music, learning, digesting, forging a solid knowledge of indie music that will help him define his future sound.

His first album « A/N » naturally comes to the ears of Joakim’s Tigersushi label, it’s the kind of music they’re drawn to, ambitious, emotional, challenging, genre-defying. For Apollo Noir, this is a distortion of reality, where music and spirituality become one. His music combines rawness, brutalism, minimalism and perfectionism in a very unique way. A few transformed voices haunt the record like a ghostly mass. There’s elements of Vangelis epic synths, Oneohtrix Point Never’s futuristic free forms or Sonic Youth dissonant noise, all made mostly from rearranged live takes recorded with a whole analog synth and drum machines set up. And yet it doesn’t sound vintage at all.

« A/N » is a trip to a distant planet, both familiar and strange, a psychedelic and distorted utopia.
