Re: MCCh 2019 (16) September 15
It’s very critic friendly just on a superficial basis alone. Artsy being that it’s on 4ad. They’re also an indie folk band from Brooklyn so that in itself you know was gonna put it in the top 10 alone. I think because of this is the same reason it won’t make number 1 this year. It’s too stereotypical of what a critic would name as their album of the year, too obvious, too safe even. I think they’re at the point where they want to swerve a little and not name something that was once considered a critical darling as their album of the year. People view or viewed the music critic as snobbish at times and they want to break out of that mold. A music critic never got the kind of respect of a Roger Ebert after all and they’re well aware of it. I’d think they know it might hurt their reputation with this decade being more urban oriented as far as what was considered groundbreaking to kind of fall back into that pattern of naming a more hipster type folksy record from the hipster Mecca of the world.

Big Thief is top, in my opinion, because we have run into another weak year for albums. We don't have the event-album we had even back in 2017 with DAMN!. Almost seems like those are a thing of the past with the focus in streaming on individual song plays.
Has music gone full circle back to the 50s-60s where singles were paramount?

I may have specific taste but this year hasn’t been horrible. My favorites were albums from Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Young Thug, The Raconteurs, Bad Religion, Tyla Yahweh, Juice WRLD, 93PUNX, Chase Atlantic, Thom Yorke, Off With Their Heads, etc... and there has been some more I have been anticipating (Keane, Kanye West, The Offspring, etc...)Daneman52 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 5:17 pm Big Thief is top, in my opinion, because we have run into another weak year for albums. Also while singles and songs do seem to be the main focus due to more digital formats, certain artists care a lot about flow and atmosphere like Travis Scott’s album ASTROWORLD last year and Post Malone’s new album.

I agree completely. In years past we had albums that the entire critical sphere couldn’t stop talking about, albums that were a clear consensus pick before the first lists were even published. 2018 and 2019 have lacked these sorts of albums, though Lana Del Rey’s newest one might be the closest thing we have to one.Daneman52 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 5:17 pm Big Thief is top, in my opinion, because we have run into another weak year for albums. There have been several excellent albums this year. Big Theif isnt one of them, imo.Nick wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 5:55 pmI agree completely. Re: MCCh 2019 (16) September 15
I’m not really talking about the quality of albums this year as much as I am remarking on the fact that there hasn’t really been an “event” album this year, at least not in the same way that Merriweather Post Pavilion was in 2009 or To Pimp a Butterfly was in 2015. The new LDR album might prove to be the exception, but it seems that there hasn’t really been an album that has dominated the discussion.discord wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 7:36 amThere have been several excellent albums this year. And while I like the Big Thief album, I agree with the people who call it overrated.
Re: MCCh 2019 (16) September 15
I think part of it is that, other than marquee hip hop acts, there isn’t a genre now that enough critics agree on to build a real consensus.
The wave of catchy indie from the 00s like The National and LCD Soundsystem are still producing good albums but we aren’t getting many new bands in that area. What we have a lot of this year is the understated indie folk like Big Thief that is doing great things but isn’t all that catchy or singable, so it inherently has a narrower wavelength than top hip hop acts or The National, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, etc.
