Albums and Songs of 1987 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Come one, come all to the poll that will celebrate the yellowest decade of them all, the 1980s! :happy-partydance:

It's now time to claim your side in the late-80s teen pop wars. Debbie Gibson?

Image

Or Tiffany?

Image

Have your say in these and other matters in the 1987 poll!

A few things remain the same with the decade poll, and a few things will be different.

What will remain the same is that I will ask you to post ranked lists of your favorite albums and songs of each year. Keeping with recent tradition, the top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final, and albums and songs in the 11-20 range will become eligible to be "wildcard" entries. At the end of the 10 yearly polls, the top 50 of the 100 candidates will qualify for the finals based on a new wildcard point system:

Wildcard points = (Yearly points)/(number of ballots)

The biggest change is the point system. Your ranked albums and songs will be assigned points using the following formula:

300/(rank + 2)

Moreover, I will assign points to all of your ranked entries, not only your top 15. Lists must have a minimum of 5 albums and songs to be eligible, but feel free to come up with extended lists if you like - every ranked album and song will receive points!

The deadline for your 1987 lists is 11:59pm forum time on September 30th.

Formatting:

It would be helpful to me if you could use the same delimiter between your rank and the artist as you use to separate the artist from the album/song. Something like 1 | Jody Watley | Looking for a New Love works great!

Eligibility:

Any song (including a re-recording of an older song) is eligible if it was released in 1987. I will use the following hierarchy to determine eligibility:

1. AM
2. Discogs/RYM
3. Wikipedia

If you include a song or album you think is questionable, it would help me if you could indicate the source it comes from (album/EP/single).

And we're off!

Had to start this early as I'm not sure I'll have a chance over the next couple days with a number of the 1986 lists rolling in.

Monthly Game Theory recommendation: Lolita Nation, which is their best album in my opinion. Features a number of great tracks, including "Mammoth Gardens," "The Waist and the Knees" and "Look Away"

It's now time to claim your side in the late-80s teen pop wars.
Well, since I must stand and be counted, Debbie Gibson. Though for songs before and after 1987.

I just noticed that "Only in My Dreams" squeaked in at the very end of 1986, and I've now added it to the end of my song list, replacing Van Halen.

This year had a minor NZ hit that got some attention in the US, (Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy, a slightly morbid tribute to their troubled family by one of our best singer-songwriters, Shona Laing.

One of my favourites of 1987.

I may be obsessed but this is another Depeche Mode dominated year for me. Also I wanna address the fact that GG Allin made this list. I don't want people to think I follow or support is his beliefs or antics but the reason he is one here is because IMO Hated In The Nation is magnum opus of anarchy driven, hating everyone, asshole, deification punk. It may be a shitty genre depending on who you are but that album is is epitome of it.

For the record, I'm not sure which side of the mall I sit on. Based on their 1987 albums, I'd give Debbie Gibson the nod, but I prefer Tiffany's second album to Debbie's. Will have to listen to their third albums to make my choice.

These are from the 70s as far as I can tell, "Crystal" from 1975 and "(Love Me Like Music) I'll Be Your Song" from 1976. Are you referring to specific live versions?

Keep "When Love Comes to Town" in mind for the 1988 poll and "Last Dance" in mind for the 1989 poll!

I'm not sure what this one is supposed to be. I can't find any Aloe Blacc song named "Diamonds", and it seems he didn't have an active music career until 1995. I initially thought it might be the Herb Alpert song, but you've listed that one too. Happy to edit to whatever this is supposed to be.

There isn't a topic for recommendations, so I'll post it here, even though it should be too well-known to recommend it. Still, it's worth a mention since nobody here has ranked it yet:
Napalm Death - You Suffer

If this song does not rank on our song list I think it is time to end this forum for once and for all.

I seem to do this every month! I've deleted this, moved 23-40 up one place and robbed Rob's idea of having Napalm Death to close my list, could've sworn You Suffer was earlier 80s than '87...

Totally '80s: According to the 2018 Overstreet price guide, the three most valuable comic books of the '80s all involve Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issue #1. (Two of the comic books simply feature an ad for that issue, with the especially rare Gobbledygook #1 actually being the most valuable comic of the decade, at $6,200 in Near Mint- condition.) In 2009, the TV movie Turtles Forever amusingly threw together the modern-day cartoon Turtles, the black and white, gritty 1984 comic book Turtles, and the juvenile 1987 cartoon Turtles.

YouTube is apparently adamant that I follow "You Suffer" with The Cure's 5 minute, 55 second "A Forest."

Winning YouTube comment: "I once waited around for an hour and a half to hear them perform this song at a festival but unfortunately sneezed at just the wrong moment and missed it"
