Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2019 (update August 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 34 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash; DIY; Drowned In Sound; God Is In The Tv; Load And Quiet; NME: The 405; The Guardian; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Again a little, probably needless reminder, Otisredding, but last update there were no highlights added for the new albums, except for the Frightened Rabbit tribute.

Thanks, Rob. I have not forgotten, but now I have little time. This weekend I will complete it.

It's crazy that Sharon Van Etten fell out of the top ten -- it'll certainly finish higher in the year end critics list (right?). It being one below a forgettable Deerhunter album has looked weird all year to me.

The MCCh always has different favorites than the end of year lists - usually niche artists that are well-regarded but not highly known or releases from noted artists that get overshadowed by their other releases. Looking back at the past few December MCCh, we see some records that made the top 10 - sometimes the top 3! - there that didn't even make top 20 in the actual EOY spreadsheets:

Julianna Barwick: Nepenthe
Bill Callahan: Dream River
Janelle Monae: The Electric Lady
Laura Marling: Once I Was an Eagle
Mbongwana Star: From Kinshasa
Destroyer: Poison Season
Run the Jewels: Run the Jewels 3
Fucked Up: Dose Your Dreams
Noname: Room 25

(The first album there didn't even make it as a bubbler!)
