225. Roy Nixon and the Down Beats – Hard-Rockin’ Daddy - 6

Hymie wrote: Sat Aug 24, 2019 5:13 am What do you give the 5 Keys version that I posted the video for? That's truly 50s R&B. The Roy Nixon is 50s rock and roll. White guys taking an R&B song and converting it to their style, the way the Bill Haley did with several of his hits.
I'm not Miles, but I give an 8. The Roy Nixon version sounds a bit bland, this one definitely does not. It sounds like a great early doo-wop record (if I'm allowed to say that).

Well yes, that's the one I posted in my original post.
When I meant it was hard to find I should say that on the original spread sheet it was spelled differently, which led to some trouble. Once I got the spelling down I could easily find the YouTube version. Still, there is hardly any information on this group on the web, let alone this specific song. In that regard it is one of the most obscure picks up til now.

Today a far less obscure pick. We have a bubbler on AM by a band currently breaking out:

226. Big Thief – Mythological Beauty
Year: 2017
Album: Capacity
Biggest Fan: Acroamor (#64)

I like the individual parts, but it feels almost off-beat when it comes together, and doesn't quite rub me the right way.
225. Roy Nixon and the Down Beats – Hard-Rockin’ Daddy - 6
The mention of Bill Haley earlier makes sense, this song puts me in mind of Rock Around the Clock a few times. Who would have thought the Down Beats would have such an upbeat tune in them?

Big Thief – Mythological Beauty: 7
Musically this is good and appealing, but lacking that bit extra. The same goes for the vocals, which are nice, but in a way I kind of expect from indie music by now. I felt that Adrianne Lenker's singing was more interesting on, say, Shark Smile from the same album. What elevates Mythological Beauty are the lyrics. It seems to start as a declaration of love, but it becomes subtly haunting and it is hard to say what it is about in the end, but it feels like Lenker - who wrote the lyrics - feels deeply for the subject of the song. It's probably easy to find out who she is singing about online, but I prefer to keep my own thoughts here. I think it is about a mother.

Big Thief - Mythological Beauty - 9

A surprisingly great song! One of my favorite's so far. Considering the respect the band seems to have I am surprised only one voted for this song in the poll. Either way the raw instrumentation is great and the vocals caught me off guard but it fits the song perfectly.

Meat Loaf - Everything Louder Than Everything Else - 4

I don't mind Meat Loaf so it hurts to put this song at a 4 but it is just so draaaaggged out. The song is interesting in the beginning but gets annoying very quick when it is over 7 minutes long. At least it is catchy.

Meat Loaf – Everything Louder Than Everything Else: 8
Nobody executes cheesiness quite as he does. He might sound like he's aware that it is all rather silly, but at the same time he finds heart and dedication in what otherwise would be a piece of loud nonsense. There is something grand and oddly honest in his delivery and it earns every last second to me.

Big Thief – Shark Smile

It's a funny coincidence that this song came around so quickly after the previous Capacity track (Meat Loaf forms an... interesting bridge between the two on the playlist), but for me the coincidence goes even further as this song has been on my mind for over a month or so and I play it from time to time. I remembered it from the Taste of MegaCritic 2017 playlist, but it really didn't strike me that much until I heard it in an indie film named White Rabbit (a pleasant, low-key movie). I was planning to finally add it to my rotation playlist - I don't know why I haven't yet. What I like most about it is the way it is sung, with these modest ooh's that feel like tickles. Listening to it more the words sink in too. Adrianne Lenker might turn out to be one of the top lyricists of her generation. Sadly, much of Capacity and her own Abysskiss is so low-key and unassuming musically that I frequently lose attention so I miss sometimes what she sings about (I haven't gotten around the new Big Thief record yet; and isn't there another one on the way already). From what I've heard, Shark Smile is her song that works the best as, well, a song.

Big Thief - Shark Smile - 9

This is surprisingly wonderful song! This is even better than the previous one I heard from them. I am always happy when I discover new music on this forum.

Big Thief - Mythological Beauty - 8

I kinda jumped the gun by giving this one a 9 earlier, it is still good but the other one is better.

Johann Strauss II– Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, Op. 214 8 Not as stuffy as some classical can be, it's got a lightness of touch and it transitions naturally between its many sections. Issa bop

Aster Aweke- Sebebu 6 I was getting into her Jocelyn Brown-goes-Ethiopia sound but then I was worn down by the repetition of the title and the vocals, which ended up going wayward by the end.

Meat Loaf- Everything Louder Than Everything Else 6 Oh Meat, he does his best to inject some drama here (as he always does) but the stakes aren't high enough to invest in this would-be rebel track, which unexpectedly resembles Manic Monday in the verse's melody, scansion and piano motif. Still, it does contain the highlight "The three men I admire most are Curly, Larry and Moe"

Big Thief- Mythological Beauty 7 As with Rob, I'm only properly familiar with Shark Smile among Big Thief's songs. Mythological Beauty appears to grasp at the same elements that make Shark Smile great, doesn't quite reach them but still maintains this grace about it and I'd like to get to know it better.

Big Thief- Shark Smile 9 It paints so much in three short, stark verses of three doomed love affairs helped by Lenker's tremulous vocals, which nail the pain and longing of the narrative. When the FX pedal intertwines with her voice for the second chorus, I just melt. I was taken with the song instantly upon first hearing it on the radio in 2017 and it's only got better with every play. I genuinely think that years from now, this will not just be better-known but universally remembered as one of the tracks of this decade.
All I got inside is vacancy!

Cat Stevens – Where Do the Children Play?: 7
Even the unsubtle, strident lyrics can't do much wrong here, because the tune and the singing are very appealing. And to think it is one of the weakest tracks on Tea for the Tillerman. It was a long time ago I heard that album last, but there is a lot of nostalgia in it for me.

I for my part feel uncomfortable in counting a vote that isn't for the song, but for the nomination method. Can't you just not vote in such a case?
I guess my vote was sort of a protest. Whenever I compiled song lists I didn't include classical music because they are about the composer and not the artist. It leaves everyone scrambling and disagreeing as to what version should be used. Do what you want with my vote but I feel if a specific version was never named then it should have never been counted or submitted.

The Zombeels comeback continues and this time around he tries to fight Hymie on his own territory: that of extremely obscure picks:

224. አስቴር አወቀ [Aster Aweke] – Sebebu (My Excuse) Very energic, good groove 6.5/10
225. Roy Nixon and the Down Beats – Hard-Rockin’ Daddy As usual 5/10
226. Big Thief – Mythological Beauty A good little song 6/10
227. Meat Loaf – Everything Louder Than Everything Else I have hard time to judge this kind of rock. I have the impression that these are songs from a teenage age that I never knew, from another country. 4/10
228. Big Thief – Shark Smile Less interesting than the previous one. 5.5/10
229. Cat Stevens – Where Do the Children Play? A timeless hit. A very strong song. 9/10
230. The Smiles and Frowns – Cornelius Superb discovery, I loved it from the very first seconds. I like the tone and nostalgia that emanates from the whole. 8.5/10

The Smiles and Frowns – Cornelius: 5

A very faithful recreation of a sound somewhere between The Beatles and The Kinks. Hard to distinguish from something actually from the sixties. It's well done, but I never felt any reason why it should be done. A bit too derivative and inconspicuous for me.

I don't see why derivative matters.

ALL THAT MATTERS IS WHAT'S COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS!

If you heard this exact same recording and you believed that it was an unreleased Kinks track from 1968, would it get more than a 5? And if so that's just wrong IMO.

Why do you need to get back to this question again and again? Let people have their own opinion.

Yes, but I also call it inconspicuous. I wouldn't call it a Kinks highlight either.

Loveable indeed, this is how I like my doo-wop. (I say "my", I don't know much doo-wop. It's the best I've heard through the game so far tho).

Lily is Lillian Leach. Here's the group with Alan Freed.

The Mellows – Lovable Lily: 6

Doo-wop is among my least favorite genres, but this was kind of nice. Lillian Leach has a nice, light voice.

Siouxie and the Banshees – Sin in My Heart: 7

A song that tries to sweep you of the floor in a whirlwind of sin. It comes close to succeeding. I should really give this band some attention.
