Alain Bashung - Madame rêve: 8
A lot of mood here. Sound-wise it reminds me of a Leonard Cohen song from anno Songs of Love and Hate. And having now translated the song in English I see even more of a kinship to Cohen. I like this kind of stuff.

I started losing track of the ones I voted for before, so now I'm going to include them all below. These are skewed toward higher numbers because I'm mostly voting for songs I already know and like, with a few others thrown in. Acid Tongue is my favorite new discovery.

The Heavy – How You Like Me Now: 8
Eminem - Drug Ballad: 6.5

Old ones:
Avenged Sevenfold - Fiction: 9.5
Nick Drake – Saturday Sun: 9.5
KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See: 8.5
Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream: 8.5
Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue: 8
Dusty Springfield - Goin' Back: 7.5

We have too many songs ranked on AM coming up in this game. Here is one that isn’t:

58. My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words
Year: 2006
Album: The Black Parade
Biggest Fan: Styrofoam Boots (#401)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

#31. Girls In Hawaii - Catwalk 5/10
#32. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue 3/10
#33. Riot - You Burn For Me 6/20
#34. Fergie - Glamorous - 2/10
#35. Avenged Sevenfold - Fiction 3/10
#36. Labi Siffre - Something Inside (So Strong) 3/10
#37. Queen - All Dead, All Dead 7/10
#38. Los Saicos - Demolicion 6/10
#39. KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See 4/10
Catchy, upbeat pop - but I just don't 'see' it - suddenly or otherwise.
#40. Rush - Yyz 8/10
#41. Monks - I Hate You 6/10
#42. Car Seat Headrest - Not What I Needed 6/10
#43. Rooney - When Did Your Heart Go Missing 8/10
#44. John Mellencamp - If I Came Knocking 7/10
#45. Tyler, The Creater - 9/11 / Mr. Lonely 7/10

I really didn't like 'Yonkers' but liked this

#46. Guns N' Roses - Prostitute 7/10
Never listened to any song off Chinese Democracy all the way through. Not as bad as I thought it would/could have been. Considering the money thrown at making this album - the song doesn't sound cheap.

#47. Cocteau Twins - Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires 7/10
#48. Nick Drake - Saturday Sun 7/10

I'm not really a fan of 'folk music' and Nick Drake's stuff generally but I didn't mind this track.

#49. Empire Of The Sun - Walking On A Dream 9/10
#50. Britney Spears - Everytime 2/10

Everytime I hear this song, I think, 'No'.

#51. Game Theory - Like A Girl Jesus 4/10
#52. Eminem - Drug Ballad 5/10
#53. The Heavy - How You Like Me Now? 8/10

Very much indeed!

#54. Joan Baez - Silver Dagger - 3/10
#55. Minnie Ripperton - Inside My Love 6/10

I was surprised that I quite liked this.

#56. Janet Jackson - If - 3/10
#57. Alain Bashung - Madame reve 3/10
#58. My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words 7/10

This band has really grown on me. Famous last words!?

56. Janet Jackson - If
I don't think I know any Janet JAckson songs, she reminds me a lot of an American Mylène Farmer on this song, so I understand why Moonbeam loves both so much. Unfortunately, it's not my dope. 4/10

57. Alain Bashung - Madame rêve
An obvious 10/10 for a song so well ranked in my list. One of the beautiful by Bashung... an oneiric onanism.

58. My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words

This illustrates the horrible effect that Velvet Underground has had on this kind of music, where every asshole now thinks that he's qualified to sing. The vocalist here is putrid.

My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words: 6

In 2006 My Chemical Romance decided to take inspiration from American Idiot and decided that Green Day's album was too quiet and subtle and amped up the sound and the melodrama. Now you might be thinking: "American Idiot quiet and subtle?" I know, right? But here we are, The Black Parade exists and it sounds equal parts impressive and ridiculous. I actually kind of love the track Welcome to the Black Parade, but Famous Last Words does less for me. Still a fine song when I'm in the right mood for this sort of thing.

Oooh, very dramatic
58. My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words - 6
And here's the melodrama. I really enjoy the start of this song, but the rest of it kind of tapers off and leaves me wanting more.

What a great finish this month! Richard Hell was right that love comes in spurts...

Top 10
1. Minnie Riperton - Inside My Love 9
2. Alain Bashung - Madame Rêve 8
3. Nick Drake - Saturday Sun 8
4. The Heavy - How You Like Me Now 7
5. Cocteau Twins - Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires 7
6. Riot - You Burn in Me 7
7. Labi Siffre - (Something Inside) So Strong 7
8. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue 7
9. Joan Baez - Silver Dagger 7
10. Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream 6

Best new discovery: Riot’s ”You Burn in Me”, a fine slice of early ’80s metal, very underrated here.

I’m surprised of the almost uniform praise of ”Walking on a Dream” (not to mention ”Suddenly I See” - that one gets a friendly 5) which has a sound I really like but feels a bit fluffy and unremarkable to me. But my biggest issue with the song is that I find it impossible to hear the lyrics of the chorus (even now that I know it). Apparently it is

”Is it real now
When two people become one
I can feel it
When two people become one”

I think it sounds more like
”It’s a brand now
To hear bone come home
I can fella
To hear bone come one”

I looked up the lyrics at songmeanings and it turned out that I wasn’t the only one who had misheard the chorus. Here’s what two other people heard:

”eh sopraaano?
Toupée pull come home
acapellllllla
Toupée pull come home”

”It’s yer graaaandma
Ton pays pas ne comprende”
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.

Janet Jackson - If
It starts out as a song with a lot of potential. The verses are interesting with the grungy guitar and her TLC-like vocals, but the pre-chorus/chorus are disappointingly generic. 5

Alain Bashung - Madame rêve
Like this one. Maybe because the instrumentation is very reminiscent of Fauré's Pavane, a personal favorite of mine. 7

My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words
Leans more towards pop punk than emo. More Killers than Promise Ring. The least melodramatic of the 3 big songs from the album. 5

John Mellencamp - What If I Came Knocking: 4
Tyler, The Creator - 911/Mr. Lonely: 5
Guns N' Roses - Prostitute: 4.5
Cocteau Twins - Frou-frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires: 7.5

This is nice! I don't remember liking it this much when I listened to the Heaven or Las Vegas album years ago. I should probably revisit this!

Nick Drake - Saturday Sun: 7

My favorite Nick Drake song, probably! Nice discovery!

Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream: 9

I almost included this in my list (it was a bubbler) - great to see some love for it!

Britney Spears - Every Time: 8

This is one of a few songs that takes me to a dark time in my life. It was the follow-up single to "Toxic", and I started hearing it in a hazy 23-day period after my father had a stroke and before he died. In the misery, my brother and I found ourselves making some ridiculous jokes, and we said that this song was an outtake from Vespertine given the music box sounds. In that emotional nightmare, it was absolutely hilarious thinking this. In any case, it's really pretty, and yeah, Brit's voice is limited, but somehow it was comforting in that time. The #1 song that reminds me of that time is "Maps" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but "Every Time" is up there. Guess I need it, baby.

Game Theory - Like a Girl Jesus: 5
Eminem - Drug Ballad: 5.5
The Heavy - How You Like Me Now: 7
Joan Baez - Silver Dagger: 4
Minnie Riperton - Inside My Love: 8.5

My discovery of the game so far! I only had heard "Loving You" before, which I found a little lightweight, but this hits ALL the right notes. Wow!

Janet Jackson - If: 10

Cue Moonbeam memorizing the choreography in the summer of 1993...

Alain Bashung - Madame rêve: 8

Another great discovery! Simply gorgeous!

My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words: 6.5

MCR is completely anomalous for me. I normally can't stand the sort of whiny vocals that a lot of emo/pop-punk bands had in the late 90s-mid 00s, but "Helena (So Long and Goodnight)" leapt over my opposition to the style, and the Black Parade album completely won me over. I understand why people may not like it, but that album is a winner for me! This song plays well in the context of the album, too.

I'll get around to the non-Spotify ones eventually, but the ease of putting this playlist on when I'm in transit or cooking or something means that I'll probably rate all the ones available on Spotify first and then come back to the YouTube ones, if that's ok.

Thanks again for the great game!

Sure, that's all good. I guess the song by Monks isn't on Spotify in your region? It is the only one you haven't voted for that does appear on the playlist.

No need to apologize; I only encourage people to get back on their rankings when they feel the need to. As long as it is clear what the changes are - as is in your case - it is very manageable.

Henry, I have included all your votes for January and February.

I couldn't help, but notice though that none of these 58 songs gets higher than a 6 (some you ranked a 7 earlier were downgraded), which even among the low voters (which also doesn't include you that much, as you use the 1 and 2 only sparingly) is never done. Nothing you REALLY liked here? It's okay if it isn't by the way.

Where has this song been all my life? Very nice Americana tune with gorgeous harmonies in the choruses.
Alain Bashung|Madame reve|4
Because I usually seek a connection to a song via its lyrics, foreign language tunes have a built-in disadvantage. Sorry Alain...
Monks|I Hate You|2
The feeling was pretty mutual....
My Chemical Romance|Famous Last Words|7
Guns 'N' Roses|Prostitute|3
Underwhelming...the chorus was OK but it felt like it took forever to get there and the payoff wasn't sufficient.
Nick Drake|Saturday Sun|4
Car Seat Headrest|Not What I Needed|4
Los Saicos|Demolicion|6
Riot|You Burn in Me|7
Minnie Riperton|Inside My Love|6
Labi Siffre|(Something Inside) So Strong|X
Rooney|When Did Your Heart Go Missing?|7
Janet Jackson|If|7
Girls in Hawaii|Catwalk|5
Game Theory|Like a Girl Jesus|5
Queen|All Dead, All Dead|6
Britney Spears|Everytime|2
Fergie feat. Ludacris|Glamorous|6

Very good list for me, lots of discoveries...
Jenny Lewis is the top one this time out.

That's probably enough for today...

I meant why do you say that it's "too bad?"

Do you feel the same way about you only having 19 songs in your top 1000 from before 1960?

Why not 190?
I'm guessing he's saying it's too bad because you're missing out on some good music. I don't want to limit my listening to music that came out in my late 20s and before. Good music is still being made in the current day IMHO.

Also, I don't want to assume that everything that was released before my birth is "dated" and not worth my time. An unfortunate side effect of The Beatles (as much as I love them) is the seeming general attitude of music criticism that if you don't write your own material you don't "matter" which has the effect of downgrading certain eras and genres of music. :|

EDIT: I do see that there are some songs you have called out that are more current. At least one of them (The Heavy) is now in one of my playlists so thanks for that. 😁

To be honest I much prefer Nat King Cole's version to Shaw's. And Willie Nelson's though I realize that wouldn't be recorded for more than 20 more years.

It would be interesting to see what a similar poll of somewhat veteran DJs (because I wouldn't expect a DJ with only a year or two under his or her belt to have a long list of possibilities to draw from) today would come up with.

I'd say that all of these items are all time classics and SHOULD be on any all time top 1000:
I would agree that if we're only talking about what music critics fixate on ("importance" and "influence") then all of the below probably have to land on the list although my PERSONAL taste would omit the bolded ones.

In The Mood - Glenn Miller - 1939
White Christmas - Bing Crosby - 1942
The Christmas Song - Nat "King" Cole - 1946
Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Gene Autry - 1949
Auld Lang Syne - Guy Lombardo - 1947
I never really want to hear holiday music outside the season so I ignore ALL artist's holiday offerings in any all-time list I assemble for that reason. They would definitely be on any all-time seasonal list I would create though.
God Bless America - Kate Smith - 1939
Over The Rainbow - Judy Garland - 1939
God Bless The Child - Billie Holiday - 1941
Sing, Sing, Sing (With A Swing) [Live at Carnegie Hall] - Benny Goodman - 1938
Swanee - Al Jolson - 1920
West End Blues - Louis Armstrong - 1928
Take The "A" Train - Duke Ellington - 1941
Star Dust - Artie Shaw - 1940
I don't really like his rendition as much as later ones.
The Stars And Stripes Forever - John Philip Sousa's Band - 1897
Minnie The Moocher - Cab Calloway - 1931
I Pagliacci - Vesti La Giubba - Enrico Caruso - 1904
In spite of liking a lot of pop singers with operatic styles including some that emerged specifically from that tradition, opera is a musical blind spot of mine. I get that Caruso was HUGE historically but I don't actually ENJOY him.
Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday - 1939
Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody - Al Jolson - 1918
I'd swap for "Toot, Toot, Tootsie".
Rhapsody In Blue - Paul Whiteman feat. George Gershwin - 1924
Take Me Out To The Ball Game - Haydn Quartet - 1908
I question whether this would be as highly regarded without its association with baseball. It's good but is it really THAT good? Not IMHO.
Ain't Misbehavin' - Fats Waller - 1929
Swinging On A Star - Bing Crosby - 1944
Crossroads Blues - Robert Johnson - 1937
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - Hank Williams - 1949
Moonlight Serenade - Glenn Miller - 1939
Good Rockin' Tonight - Wynonie Harris - 1948
This is more "important" but I feel "Bloodshot Eyes" Is actually a more exciting tune.
If I Didn't Care - Ink Spots - 1939
Their music sounds very "samey" to me overall but this is probably their best offering. It wouldn't land in my Top 1000 for sure though.
You Always Hurt The One You Love - Mills Brothers - 1944
Mood Indigo - Duke Ellington - 1930
One O'Clock Jump - Count Basie - 1937
T For Texas (Blue Yodel # 1) - Jimmie Rodgers - 1928
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy - Andrews Sisters - 1941
Caldonia Boogie - Louis Jordan - 1945
Wabash Cannon Ball - Roy Acuff - 1938
In The Jailhouse Now - Jimmie Rodgers - 1928
Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be) - Billie Holiday - 1945
Can The Circle Be Unbroken (Bye And Bye) - Carter Family - 1935
Daddy's Little Girl - Mills Brothers - 1950
Love the Mills Brothers but this is too sentimental for my taste.
The Prisoner's Song - Vernon Dalhart - 1925
St. Louis Blues - Bessie Smith - 1925
How High The Moon - Les Paul & Mary Ford - 1951
Ol' Man River - Paul Robeson - 1928
Paper Doll - Mills Brothers - 1942
Koko - Charlie Parker - 1945
Sentimental Journey - Les Brown (Doris Day) - 1945
Hey Good Lookin' - Hank Williams - 1951
Flying Home - Lionel Hampton - 1942
The Grand Old Rag (You're A Grand Old Flag) - Billy Murray - 1906
Walking The Floor Over You - Ernest Tubb - 1941
Too Young - Nat "King" Cole - 1951
Makin' Whoopee - Eddie Cantor - 1928
It's Too Soon To Know - Orioles - 1948
Stormy Weather - Ethel Waters - 1933
Body And Soul - Coleman Hawkins - 1939
Casey Jones - American Quartet featuring Billy Murray - 1910
Hard to listen to the stilted way Murray's vocals sound to modern ears though I recognize it was a by-product of the need to "shout" into the recording horn before electrical recording was a reality.
Chattanooga Choo Choo - Glenn Miller (Tex Beneke and the Modernaires) - 1941
Get Your Kicks On Route 66 - Nat "King" Cole - 1946
Choo Choo Ch'Boogie - Louis Jordan - 1946
Cold Cold Heart - Hank Williams - 1951
Begin The Beguine - Artie Shaw - 1938
I'll Be Seeing You - Bing Crosby - 1944
Crazy Blues - Mamie Smith - 1920
Boogie Chillen' - John Lee Hooker - 1948
New San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys - 1940
You Made Me Love You, I Didn't Want To Do It - Al Jolson - 1913
Blue Moon Of Kentucky - Bill Monroe - 1947
This would probably be my choice from Big Mon too although bluegrass purists would likely argue for "Uncle Pen".
My Blue Heaven - Gene Austin - 1927
Why Don't You Do Right? - Benny Goodman (Peggy Lee) - 1942
Sonny Boy - Al Jolson - 1928
Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just As Bad) - T-Bone Walker - 1947
I'll Never Smile Again - Tommy Dorsey (Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers) - 1940
I Can't Get Started - Bunny Berigan - 1937
A Tisket, A Tasket - Ella Fitzgerald with Chick Webb's Orchestra - 1938
Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend) - Vaughn Monroe - 1949
Rather hear Cash's cover on this one. I personally feel "So You're the One" is the better Monroe tune.
Let Me Call You Sweetheart - Peerless Quartet - 1911
All Or Nothing At All - Frank Sinatra with Harry James - 1939
Don't Be That Way - Benny Goodman - 1938
Straighten Up And Fly Right - Nat "King" Cole - 1944
Alexander's Ragtime Band - Arthur Collins and Byron Harland - 1911
I get that this is "important" but I just don't care for the tune.
Some Of These Days - Sophie Tucker - 1911
Pennies From Heaven - Bing Crosby - 1936
Blues In The Night - Jimmie Lunceford (Willie Smith) - 1942
Roll 'Em Pete - Pete Johnson & Joe Turner - 1939
Tea For Two - Art Tatum - 1939
Cool Water - Sons Of The Pioneers - 1941
Jingle, Jangle, Jingle - Kay Kyser - 1942

Just to play Devil's advocate, Nirvana essentially killed off hair metal and the Velvet Underground vastly expanded the territory that lyrics could cover. Someone else will have to argue for Radiohead though as I find them overrated.

Stardust's got quite the legacy then. It was already voted best song of all time in a 1941 Billboard poll amongst Orchestra leaders.(which of course Shaw's might've got a hand in)

It was the 3rd most recorded song of the 1890-1954 time period after SILENT NIGHT and ST. LOUIS BLUES.

The Shaw version was also number one all time in a 1956 Billboard poll of disc jockeys. The Glenn Miller version was #4 and the Tommy Dorsey version was #22 on that same poll.

In the 1953 poll STARDUST was named as the favorite SONG of all time. Not recordings, just songs.

It does. Joel Whitburn dates the first charting version back to 1930 by Irving Mills.

A pejorative term. It was a strain of slightly more commercial heavy metal music said to appeal to women more than "real" heavy metal due to the bands' recordings of softer tunes called "power ballads".

The hair part came in because the bands also concerned themselves a lot with their image and its detractors suggested they spent more time on getting their hair teased just right than on writing good music and instrumental proficiency.

Personally, I find the debate over what's "really" heavy metal to be the most tiresome bit about heavy metal fandom. Punk fans also get in a tizzy about authenticity a lot.

That comes in many genres. There's plenty of arguments among rockabilly collectors as to which artists are and aren't rockabilly. Many purists do not consider Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent and Elvis on RCA to be rockabilly.

Fergie- Glamorous 3 If you're going to boast about the trappings of your fame, at least make it entertaining! The Fatman Scoop-like chant of "If you ain't got no money..." sounds like it was tacked on for that purpose.

Labi Siffre- Something Inside So Strong 4 The song's sadly hamstrung by the elements that Siffre probably added for maximum wider impact to raise awareness of its Apartheid subject matter (the dry-ice production, the choir in time for the last Truck Driver's Gear Change chorus).

K.T. Tunstall- Suddenly I See gets a high 6 as its charms have worn through airplay yet it's still likeable, just not as much as Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.

Empire of the Sun- Walking on a Dream 7 Never got into it as much as some of my friends did at the time but always welcomed hearing it on a night out.

Britney Spears- Everytime 3 This and Lucky were uncomfortable for me to listen to on their own merits before Spears' problems became public. At the same time, I'd feel guilty scoring it lower.

Minnie Riperton- Inside My Love 8 As sickly in its own way as the Britney selection but addictively so, I'm a fan of every one of the few songs I know by Riperton.
All I got inside is vacancy!

If I give a song a 5 or a 6, I like it.
