I commend them for once again putting Fiona Apple at #1, but I'm surprised it's her only song on the list (no "Paper Bag"? Really?), and I'm disappointed "The Great Beyond" by R.E.M. doesn't even show up while both "Nookie" and "Higher" made the cut.

The list is based on the Modern Rock Billboard Chart of 1999.

I'm going of off Wikipedia here for these numbers, as Billboard removed artist histories a few weeks ago for some reason.

'Paper Bag' was released as a single in November 2000 so it wouldn't be eligible even if it made the charts, which it didn't.

The peak of 'The Great Beyond' was 'only' 11 whereas 'Nookie' peaked at 3 and 'Higher' was a number 1. That said, 'Fast as You Can' had a peak of 20, and 'My Name Is' didn't get further than 37, so chart performance isn't everything.

I feel like they're taking the songs' quality into account, right? Otherwise, if they're using chart peaks as an influence, the list is ineligible.

Yes and no.

Yes, because it does not seem like the rankings are based on chart performance, you'd expect way more number 1 or 2 hits at the top instead of most having peaked lower than 10. The #3 peaked at 37, the #1 at 20.

But yes, because songs are only eligible for this list if they've peaked at 40 or higher. Technically there are songs that would've peaked at 41 or lower, but those are just not published.

As a sidenote: because they base it on Billboard the list is very US centered, featuring no post-britpop at all (as it hardly charted in the US).

Ok, so it’s still good. It’s odd bc some of the other lists had less obvious Britpop on it.

Kind of sounds like they’re paying homage to the classic Magnetic Fields album from that year yet.....where the heck are they?

They did not release a single that charted on the Modern Rock Charts in 1999
