Stereolab - Brakhage: 7
Not even half as challenging or experimental as a Stan Brakhage film. Quite the opposite, it sounds very inviting and pleasant.

Now, probably one of the most obscure tracks yet, with barely any plays on Spotify for not just the song, but the artist in general. Also, on Rate Your Music his music hardly listened to.

178. Milton Babbitt – All Set
Year: Composition released in 1957; first recording released in 1963
Album: Spectrum: New American Music, Volume V*
Biggest Fan: Sonofsamiam (#626)
* This all needs some explanation. This track is technically a classical composition and not a recording. A bit like “Traditional” although here we at least have a composer; one alive and well when music recordings were made, no less. So, Babbitt composed this piece in 1957 and it took until 1963 until Bill Evans performed and released the first recording of it. I can’t find the Bill Evans recording quite yet and I have no reason to believe that Sonofsamiam specifically wants that one (he would have just named it Bill Evans – All Set, I suspect). The most “famous” version (famous is in very big quotation marks here) is actually credited to Milton Babbitt and comes from a 1974 compilation called Spectrum: New American Music, Volume V. This version is added to the Spotify playlist and I think is the one we should vote for, unless Sonofsamiam comes in and says otherwise.

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Hard to vote for. It is very inaccessible and probably needs multiple listens. I wasn't caught by it yet, though.

Jay-Z feat. Amil & Ja Rule- Can I Get A...? 7 Amil pushes it up to 8, Ja Rule brings it crashing back down.

Ty Segall Band- I Bought My Eyes 5 Doesn't really go anywhere for me.

Stereolab- Brakhage 8 Like the difference in tempos between the vocalists, makes what could have been just a chillout track into something that makes me want to hear more by them.

Milton Babbit- All Set 6 Although it's too abstract for me to fully 'get' at this stage, there were sections where all the disparate parts bounced off each other in a good way, I'm open to giving it more chances to impress.

Thanks to this post I've noticed that my adventures in misnumbering continue and that I never numbered one 176. Fixed it now, by making I Bought My Eyes 176, Brakhage 177, etc.

Tom Waits – Jesus Gonna Be Here: 7
Sorry Hymie, but sometimes the world needs someone who sings like a drunken beggar at the end of his life and Tom Waits is the grand master of the style.

Tom Waits- Jesus Gonna Be Here 8 Always marginally preferred the Blind Boys of Alabama version but it's got everything you could want from a Tom song: dark humour, experimental take on blues, deranged howling :music-rockon:

Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life: 2
Are these people serious? This is very much a minor Green Day clone, but damn these lyrics are obnoxious. Of course, the genre and the time was filled with songs about disaffected youth that thought the whole world was against them, but the way this band words it is beyond the stereotype. These guys literally state that bad things keep happening to them and not to anyone else. How juvenile can you get? Maybe 15 years ago I could relate more to these feelings, but even then I probably thought this song was a little too much.

The Icicle Works – Love is a Wonderful Colour: 7

New wave/ New romantics/ Post-punk... A bit of all three and of course released in the early eighties. It sounds big and epic in a way only that decade would dare, but somehow this never becomes laughable. It really has this sweeping element to it that it goes for.

169. Van Halen - And The Cradle Will Rock...4 - hair rock ? Na.
170. Ace : How Long : 7
171. Papas Fritas : Way you Walk : a full 10. In my top 500, I loooove this bass line and the boy-girl story. A must listen.
172. fun. - Sight of the Sun : 5 - unpretentious but ultimately uninspiring and unchallenging.
173. Wynonie Harris : Git to Gittin' Baby : 6
174. Burial - Ghost Hardware : 6
175. Jay-Z, featuring Amil & Ja Rule – Can I Get A…: 6 - Surprisingly enjoyable - good tune and I enjoyed Jay-Z's delivery
177. Ty Segall Band – I Bought My Eyes: 8 - Great discovery ! this chap's output is simply mind-blowing, so you're going to have filler. But this isn't one - love it !
177. Stereolab - Brakhage : 7 - not the 'Lab's best - but a fine testimony of their loungy leanings towards the end of their career.
178. Milton Babbitt – All Set 2 - really not my cup of tea. Barely musical
179. Tom Waits – Jesus Gonna Be Here 7 - In line with Rob, we all need a good drunken gruffy voice in our lives. This does it for me.
180. Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life 1 - Wow this is bad. Even comparing it to Green Day is a compliment. I don't usually pay much attention to the lyrics, but they are so obviously generic that even my 16 yo wouldn't grant them a raised eyebrow.
181. The Icicle Works – Love is a Wonderful Colour: 6 - Still a bit too 80s for me, but rubs me the right way.

Simple Plan- Welcome To My World 2 The verses with blandly relatable problems make you expect it to build up to a universal Everybody Hurts-/Fix You-style chorus, which still wouldn't salvage this but it sinks once it becomes an "It's All About ME" anthem. MOR dressed as emo (EMO R?)

162. Prince – The Human Body you found one of the Prince song I like the least, sorry moonbeam :-( 4/10
163. Faith No More – Digging the Grave One of the genres I don't like at all. 3/10

165. The Fall – Impression of J. Temperence This is what I like. 8/10
166. AC/DC – Who Made Who Pfff.. 5/10
167. Slick Rick – Hey Young World I thought this song was cool. 6.5/10
168. R.E.M. – Little America I believed it was the credits of "Friends" at first. :-) For me, REM is never unpleasant but never excellent. 6/10
169. Van Halen – And the Cradle Will Rock 4/10
170. Ace – How Long very pleasant and soft ballad 6.5/10
171. Papas Fritas – Way You Walk 6/10
172. fun. – Sight of the Sun Generic pop. 4.5/10
173. Wynonie Harris – Git to Gittin’ Baby As usual 6/10

175. Jay-Z, featuring Amil & Ja Rule – Can I Get A… 4/10
176. Ty Segall Band – I Bought My Eyes probably, the American artist I love the most right now, but this song doesn't have my preference 7/10
177. Stereolab - Brakhage on the verge of easylistening 6/10
178. Milton Babbitt – All Set 4/10
179. Tom Waits – Jesus Gonna Be Here What a voice.. .excellent 8/10
