Biggest Fan: Hymie (#968)

*Correct me if I’m wrong here. I’m not 100% on the year.
1951 is correct. It's a 9 for me.

The song was covered by BB King. A REAL cover, meaning that it was released while the Tampa Red original was current in an effort to steal away some of the sales. Over the years the word "cover" has mistakenly been used to denote any song that was recorded by an artist who did not do the original version, no matter how many years later. Those are actually not covers, but "remakes."

A true cover is when a current release is recorded by another act right away and issued in an attempt to steal away some of the popularity of the song.

151. Pere Ubu – On the Surface
Excellent song! Nice discovery for me. This little Spanish melody is excellent. And the bass is perfect, I see that the Raptures stole the air from them on their song Echoes. 8.5/10

152. Big Maybelle – One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show
As usual. 4.5/10

153. The Spaniels – Baby It’s You
As usual. 3/10

154. Pata Negra – Camarón
I like the guitar, it has a very special sound here. It reminds me totally of Caribbean music. 5.5/10

155. Fleet Foxes – Kept Woman
You can't go wrong with this great band. What beautiful vocal harmonies! A sensitivity, a strong emotion, a great nostalgia pierced with hope can be heard here. 8.5/10

156. David Axelrod – Holy Thursday
I had already found this excellent in the "best unnaclaimend songs"! Very nice album. Exactly what I love, it looks like a lot like Gainsbourg/Vannier with this very special orchestration. 8/10

157. Justin Hayward – One Again
Not at all what I like. The production is very, very, very dated. 3/10

158. Zeus – The Sound of You
I like this light psychedelicism and this pop melody but I have a little problem with the voice, I have the impression that it sings out of tune, don't I? 5.5/10

159. Shudder to Think – Hot One
It smells like Bowie in here. I'm missing a little something, a chorus that might pop. 6/10

160. Tampa Red – She’s Dynamite
As usual 5.5/10

161. Jack Scott – Baby She’s Gone
As usual 5/10

Is life grand with two Hymies? I think the results are mixed.

Tampa Red – She’s Dynamite: 7
Close to an 8 actually. Soulful blues. Very well played.

Jack Scott – Baby She’s Gone: 4
Damn, this man sounds a lot like Elvis Presley. Now I like Elvis in general, but not his more sappy ballads and it seems like Jack Scott doesn't do them better.

"Baby She's Gone" is NOT a ballad.

Tampa Red – She’s Dynamite: 7 (King's version gets an 7,5)

Jack Scott – Baby She’s Gone: 8, the intro to The Eagle's Heartache Tonight sounds awefully familiair.

It might help that I'm on a 50s-60s binge the past few days, but these both ROCK! (although She's Dynamite was arguably recorded to early to take that too literally)

157. Justin Hayward – One Again - 2/10 - far too 80s for me. Bad memories :)
158. Zeus – The Sound of You - 8/10 - I enjoyed that 70s sound, warm and updated to today's sound. Checked out on Zeus, who I never heard of. Good discovery !
159. Shudder to Think – Hot One - 4/10 - very surprised by this one - I knew Shudder to Think from their post-hardcore / Fugazi links and this Velvet Goldmine excerpt is so influenced by Bowie it took me by surprise. But I didn't really like it.
160. Tampa Red – She’s Dynamite - 4/10 : "Now I met a lot women who could love alright But nothing like the woman I met this night" ?? Boy that sounds dated :) Don't really like the whole thing.
161. Jack Scott – Baby She’s Gone - 7/10 : Yet again, I agree with Rob, sounds in every way like the King, with a very slightly different voice, but you can't go wrong with that method :)

Prince – The Human Body: 3

The narrative of Prince since the middle of the nineties is that he has fallen a lot. Moonbeam's many Prince cuts that will appear in this game are set to prove this prejudice wrong, but with various degrees of success. I like Prince a lot, but not always, yet this is the first time I thought one of his songs is frankly terrible. Not really tuneless, but still aimless and pointless, as if Prince tried to keep up with the times in a way that exactly feels like 'trying'.

Today’s nomination is by Spiritualized and you’ll notice there is no ranking. I think I mentioned it before, but Spiritualized missed the initial poll on which this game is based and used the opportunity to send in a list of 210 songs for which he would be the only fan. He makes his first appearance here:

163. Faith No More – Digging the Grave
Year: 1995
Album: King for a Day – Fool for a Lifetime
Biggest Fan: Spiritualized

Thanks Rob, we can have a bit of rock'n'roll in this very Princey/Hymie world :)

I will give Digging The Grave a 9. Faith No More has a history and a reputation for being a metal band, justifiably so, but I really think there is much more than that - exemplified by their leader, Mike Patton, who dabbled in all sorts of experimental rock (Fantomas / Mr Bungle / Tomahawk).
The song is a stomper indeed, but not in a metal way - there isn't a stereotypical solo guitar and Patton's shrieks are accompanied by true sung melodies - the chorus is catchy as hell.

The Notorious B.I.G. – Suicidal Thoughts: 8
I usually have a very heavy negative reaction to gangster rap, but somehow Biggie has a tendency to avoid this. There is a sense of tragedy and drama in his lyrics and the way he tells his stories that feel far more lived in than is usual for the genre. This man had character and if it wasn't always a nice character, he owned up to it. This is a very short song, but it grips immediately and doesn't release you easily.

Easy one - a consistent favorite of mine. I've completely re-vamped my song ranking from last year and this moved down precisely one spot (to #24). Little America is a great live song - a consistent set-closer for the band during the Preconstruction/Reconstruction tours in 1985 (I saw the them 13 times that year - my favorite era of live R.E.M.).

I get that - basically it's about travelling the U.S.A. in a van as a band, touring constantly (with the requisite oblique historical/political references - live Stipe often changed lyrics like "Reagan is on the beach/do you realize the life you've led?"). "Another Greenville, another Magic Mart" - the monotony of travelling in the Southern states. Let it grow!
