Noriyuki Iwadare – Godot – The Fragrance of Dark Coffee [Jazz remix]

10/10

No surprise about my score. The remixed theme music (a very fitting theme I might add) for my favorite fictional character ever. I don't care if you call it lounge jazz or whatever, to me it's a very compelling SONG. The original version fits into the aesthetic of the video game / visual novel that it comes from, but I like the more organic feel of the remix/new arrangement. Of course there is a thick layer of nostalgia to be accounted for, but still a great tune. Piano and sax intermingling like flavors on a plate, giving off incredible vibes, backed up by capable drums. Flows immaculately, and has an obvious beginning, middle and end.

140. Vampire Weekend – I Think Ur A Contra
a song of great beauty, simple, fine and moving 8/10

141. Fugain et le Big Bazar – Une Belle Histoire
A huge classic in France, used in many films and commercials. It's the kind of song that, how can I put it, serves as a tapestry for a country. It is so present on a daily basis that we no longer pay attention to it. 6.5/10

142. The Magic Numbers – A Start With No Ending
I have tried many times and have never been hooked on this group, too ordinary. But that's not bad, of course. 5/10

143. Noriyuki Iwadare – Godot – The Fragrance of Dark Coffee [Jazz remix]
Is it just me or is the sound of the saxophone awful. Elevator music. 3/10

144. “Weird Al” Yankovich – Hardware Store
I don't know this artist, but the song is pretty nice and funny. 5.5/10

145. The Verlaines – Slow Sad Love Song
The guitar is still as good in his compositions, classical, but maybe a little too classical? 6.5

146. Billy Joel – All for Lenya
I know very little about this artist but doesn't he look a little too much like Elton John? At least not my stuff! 4.5

140. Vampire Weekend – I Think Ur A Contra (7.5) - Good song, but what else did one expect ?

141. Fugain et le Big Bazar – Une Belle Histoire (7.5) - A bit cheesy, but still a classic in French popular music

142. The Magic Numbers – A Start With No Ending (7) - Catchy Indie Rock, I like it

143. Noriyuki Iwadare – Godot – The Fragrance of Dark Coffee [Jazz remix] (7) To start with, I listened, by mistake, to the "instrumental" version of this song : just a piano and an unmemorable musical phrase. Maybe easier with a few repeats in a game, but not my cup of tea. However, the jazz version is something else. Much much easier on the ear.

144. “Weird Al” Yankovich – Hardware Store (6.5) - Good fun, the harmonies on the chorus are really quite good.

145. The Verlaines – Slow Sad Love Song (6) - Not bad, but I don't seem to connect. A bit too low-sounding and sad.

146. Billy Joel – All for Lenya (5) = upbeat, but ultimately generic. And not far off Elton John indeed.

Sorry, Rob, but there are two typos: it's Leyna and not Lenya and it's Yankovic and not Yankovich.

Fixed both. I just like to think that Billy Joel is obsessively in love with Lotte Lenya for some reason.

Anyway:

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Hardware Store: 4
Meh, Weird Al has much funnier songs. The lyrics here aren't particularly funny. I guess the appeal is the rapid tempo summary at the end, that has a It's End of the World As We Know It appeal, but that's it.

The Verlaines - Slow Sad Love Song: 7
Good indie rock. The Verlaines pull of the tricky sad-sackiness well.

Billy Joel - All for Leyna: 7
A Billy Joel song I didn't know, though it was understandably a single. The lead single of the album even. Perhaps it has just been overtaken by other songs in the Billy Joel canon, but if you ask me, this one is more fun than most. Very catchy and appealing song.

This Year's Model is one of great songs were even it's second tier songs are very much worth your time.

Beulah – Gene Autry: 6
It's intro promises something special, but in the end it is just a good yet kind of standard indie song.

There are still Weird Al songs left, only two of which were voted by you!

Also, I change my vote for Un Belle Histoire from 7 to 8. Have been listening to it a lot since it appeared here.

147. Deerhunter - Octet
As much as I like this band very much, this song doesn't fit into my favorites, far from it. 4.5/10

148. Elvis Costello – Hand In Hand
A "little" classic song. Not a masterpiece, but a nice song. 6.5/10

149. Beulah – Gene Autry
I didn't know the artist or the song. A pleasant little song with a nice melody. 7/10

150. Leroy Smart – Ballistic Affair
I have a problem with reggae, it's that I don't know it well enough. I won't be able to distinguish the very good from the very bad, I think. I think this one is particularly nice though. Maybe because it reminds me a lot of Gainsbourg's reggae albums that formed my ear to this music. 7/10

Finally up to ranking May:

The Libertines – Up the Bracket - 8
Gillian Welch – Elvis Presley Blues - 8 CHANGED
Deerhunter - Octet - 8
Kebnekajse - Förberedelser till fest - 8

All fantastic songs, it was a happy coincidence that Octet ended up an 8

Traffic – The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - 7

I was surprised by this one, and I've come to really enjoy it.

Stone Sour – Say You’ll Haunt Me - 7

This is good but also there was a point in the 2000's where every rock song sounded just like this.

Noriyuki Iwadare – Godot – The Fragrance of Dark Coffee [Jazz remix] - 7

Back in 2011, I found this song as part of atmospheric thing that was being passed around the internet, where you put on this song along with a rain sound and fireplace sound and enjoy the ambiance. I put it on when I'd bake in my first year at university. Good memories associated with it.

Laurent Garnier – The Man With the Red Face - 6
Beulah – Gene Autry - 6
Elvis Costello – Hand In Hand - 6
Héctor Lavoe – El Cantante - 6

10 minutes that never get old, great listening.

Tom Waits – Johnsburg, Illinois - 6

I love Tom but I never connect with his short little pieces like this as much.

Little Richard – Kansas City - 6
“Weird Al” Yankovic – Hardware Store - 6
Billy Joel – All for Leyna - 6
Childbirth – Siri, Open Tinder - 5
The Rolling Stones – Child of the Moon - 5
Fugain et le Big Bazar – Une Belle Histoire - 5
The Verlaines – Slow Sad Love Song - 5
Breakout - Co Stało Się Kwiatom? - 5
The Clovers – Fool, Fool, Fool - 5
The Magic Numbers – A Start With No Ending - 5
Leroy Smart – Ballistic Affair - 4
The Kinks - Wonderboy - 4
Ed Harcourt – Until Tomorrow Then - 4
James Baskett – Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah - 4
Dwa Plus Jeden - Nowy Wspaniały Świat - 4
Vampire Weekend – I Think Ur A Contra - 4
Liza Minnelli – The Travelin’ Life - 3
Annette Peacock – Love’s Out to Lunch - 3
“Traditional” – Yankee Doodle - 2

Traditional- Yankee Doodle 1 Echo the sentiments of everyone else here, does anyone actively listen to this song, given that it's effectively a nursery rhyme at this point?

James Baskett- Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah 4 Leaving aside its extolling of the simple pleasure of being a sharecropper, it, like the above, doesn't hold much modern value and doesn't feel like a fully fledged song. Not one of Disney's best.

Laurent Garnier- The Man with the Red Face 10 Can imagine Krurze's right that it's become a cliché of techno sets (don't know firsthand, I only know it from the old PC game Beach Life) but, for me, it remains as dizzyingly potent as ever, it builds beautifully, the sax weaving through the rhythm unevenly, 9+ minutes doesn't seem long enough to contain all its inventiveness. Even though I'm still not as familiar with as much techno as I feel I should be, Red Face was my gateway drug to dance music, to seeing that music didn't need guitars or words to mean something to me.

Elvis Costello- Hand In Hand 7 One of the tracks that solidified that great Attractions sound without being a full standout in its own right.
All I got inside is vacancy!
