Biggest Fan - The First Top 100

Post by Rob » Sat May 04, 2019 4:21 pm

Hello everyone, this is indeed the reveal of the rankings of the first 100 songs that appeared in the Biggest Fan game on this forum.
What is Biggest Fan? That is a little game we play here, based on the All-Time Song Poll of last year. In that game, people could vote for their favorite songs of all time, up to a top 1000. Although a lot of songs got multiple votes, there were still a lot of songs that only managed to get one vote. The lonely tunes were then used for this Biggest Fan game, where each day there is a random song from that list is picked. People can than give them a grade and average rating of these votes will be revealed in this topic, ranked from lowest to highest. The plan is to update this top 100 every time we did another 100. People are still allowed to vote for songs that have already appeared here and can also change their votes, so list has the potential to remain dynamic.

If all goes according to plan I will put out the whole top 100 this weekend: tomorrow more than today.

I only expected a top 100 list of the averages, so this countdown with images and all is a very pleasant surprise. Great job, Rob!

In addition to my top 10 in each monthly topic (I still need to make April’s top 10) I plan to go back and rate anything that is listed here with an average above a certain threshold. Perhaps 5.5, since that is the midpoint of the scale, right?

Yes, but why only those? To support the songs that are already among the most loved?
There are 54 songs ranking 5,5 or higher, by the way, so from that perspective it's just little than half of them.

I want to influence the top of the list, but limit the work. Also, the highly rated songs that I didn’t put in my top 10s are the ones that most deserve another listen, I suppose. But since the songs were not in my top 10s, presumably I will decrease their averages, not support them.

Yes, it sometimes seems there are little votes for a song, because few people post on the day a song appear, but over the course of a few days and sometimes weeks the votes keep dripping in. Although there are very few voters who voted for everything.

Woops, as someone who is not that familiar with the looks of Erik B. & Rakim I looked out for the huge necklaces, but somehow missed that the necklace on this picture was Flavour Flav's iconic clock. Very stupid. Fixed it.

This update contains an infernal journey, two bands using Satanic imagery while dealing with death and an unconventional Christ figure. Obviously we are getting higher up in our list.

Apologies for some of the blurry photo's coming from nineties music video's. Isn't there a business for restoring and remastering these?

By coincidence this group contains both the first entry of this poll and the hundredth and therefore last entry. Do you remember which they were? The first one was also the one which got the most votes, which is no surprise.

So now we have had the first 100 – or really the first 125 – I have a question: do people like this game?

I ask this because although it has quite consistent participation the grades in general aren’t that good, which frequently give me the impression that people don’t get much out of it. The averages aren’t great either. Of course there is a low participation threshold, since it is only one song a day. But do people want to continue with it?

Myself, I got more than a few good discoveries out of it that makes it worthwhile, but I don’t set this thing up for me alone. And even with steady participation there are quite a few people who seem to vote only when they already know the song beforehand and few make any comment. Is it worth it as a discovery game for most participants? Maybe people get fun out of it without discovering of course, but I’d like to know what you all think about this?

Another point, Spiritualized didn’t make a top 1000 songs, but wants to nominate some songs he loves that didn’t get any votes. I’m a little weary of including too many of these requests. In a way because I don’t want to keep on updating my starting list on every whim, but if someone hasn’t hand in a top 1000 originally I don’t mind too much. Again what do you all think?

Finally, some fun facts:
• The following people rated every song, in order of appearance: Hymie, PlasticRam, Rob, DaveC, Akhenaten and Honorio. Romain didn’t vote for Red Tape and Berta, Berta, though he mentioned in both cases not knowing how to rate them. Brad and Zombeels both missed three songs and SafetyCat two (an oversight?). TheLastEnemy faltered at the finish line, as he votes for the first 96 songs, but hasn’t participated since.
• Conversely, Acroamar only voted for Stay Together for the Kids (and gave a 10). LiveInPhoenix also only voted twice. I even wondered if they were official votes.
• Most voters however, were more erratic. Either voting for a specific period of time (not necessarily at the start) and then dropping of again. Others just vote every now and then, but of those only Andy1010 explained this.
• Only 15 songs got over 20 votes, with Good News – typically the first song – winning with 26 votes.
• Jolka, Jolka pamiętasz got only 10 votes and therefore the least. It is not on Spotify, which might have hurt it. Non-Spotify songs got less votes, even if Jolka, Jolka underperforms regardless. Seems people likes to use my playlist for this.
• Hymie and Zombeels tie with the most nominated songs on the list, with seven apiece. Hymie’s score clearly better than Zombeels, as six of his songs made the top 50.
• Speaking of doing well, StevieFan, who came after Zombeels and Hymie with most songs present (at six) once posted in one of the topics that he felt that people didn’t like his nominations much. Actually, in general his suggestions did better than most and he even has two songs in the top 10!
• You probably already noticed, but Prince had the most songs here, all nominated by Moonbeam. With placements at #17, #21 and #29 The Purple One’s presence was deemed welcome.

Rob, I still love this "game" as much as ever, it allows me to listen to what I would never have listened to on my own.

Perhaps a suggestion to attract more voters, take a song not at random on all the lists, but by taking a song at random in each list and go around each forumers so as not to "disadvantage" them. (50 songs -> 50 separate forumers) ?

I know I am sort of one of the erratics, but I like this game. It’s a bit sad to see so many low ratings, but I suppose that people are just being honest, so that’s an observation, not a complain.

I have been thinking along the same lines as Romain about the random selections. Perhaps with a bigger chance of getting a song selected for people who are rating songs?

Thanks, Rob! The countdown was a surprise!

I do enjoy the game (though I've fallen a bit behind now). I love the idea of putting a spotlight on songs that are less known but beloved by one of our users. I have made some nice discoveries, as well!

This has been fun! I think I would be overwhelmed if I rated them all, but it's been interesting to see how you guys react to some personal favorites that haven't been discussed here before. With my limited exploratory listens, it's been great for discovery too - Acid Tongue and What You Know are two of the best discoveries I've made this year, and going through the top ones from the rollout, Edge of Town is another great one. I'll give it a high rating soon after giving it a few more spins.

I would also be curious to see how established classics would fare on a 1-10 scale here for comparison’s sake.

I like this even though I don't like most of the records much. I did like The Heavy record, so I'm glad that ended up on top. I also like it because it exposes the other members to lesser known stuff from my list that they otherwise would never listen to.

As for scores being low, by definition these are songs that only one member here loves, so it's very likely that they either don't have wide appeal, or in my case, are mainly from an era and of styles that are now well known by most members here.

Aw, none of my songs have been picked yet. Then again, there's only 19 of them. And many of them have been nominated by me in forum games already.

And sorry I haven't participated, I think I'm just not yet ready to assign a numerical rating to individual songs. Largely because song ratings would probably me far more volatile than album ratings. I'd like to start once Sonemic comes about, but that could take years...

Remember after the previous all-time artists poll, there was a spreadsheet where people assigned ratings out of 10 to the different artists? I believe there was a plan to make one for songs as well, but it never came to fruition. Would that be an idea worth pursuing?

I like the game. I'm still planning on eventually rating all of them. But, besides those few weeks in March, I haven't really had the right mindset to sit down and listen to music, instead of just having it on as background noise all day.

That was me! I'm happy to start one, but I was waiting on the AM update and never got around to it.

One thing that held me back a bit though was details about data security. With an openly editable Google Sheet, it would be easy for someone to accidentally (or deliberately, though I doubt anyone would do this) delete or edit the ratings of someone else. Does anyone who is more familiar with this sort of thing with me know if there is a way to "lock" a column of a spreadsheet such that only one person can edit it?

I'm guilty of this. Think I voted for about a month and got behind. I've been really focused on completing my Top 10,000 Songs list & Playlist that I started about 8 months ago. I've also been contributing some long lists on the 80s threads as I go through years for my Top 10,000.

I actually like the thread as it exposes the unique tastes of certain members. I joined right about the time the original list was counting down. Wish I had joined soon enough to contribute a list as I imagine I would have finished pretty high here.

As for the game, it is a good channel to expose our fellow forumers to our favorite tunes. I like the idea of doing a "user-focused" random entry as well, but it favors the forumers who haven't had many entries...and therefore is not totally random anymore.

I love the "game". I prefer it to Unclaimed Songs one - I find the songs far more varied (and more fun). I've discovered Alain Bashing, that bonkers Klatu track (and Klatu themselves). I've never heard those daft Queen and Elton John tracks before, and enjoyed them. I've never delved into post-2000 Prince tracks before either.

I didn't join the forum until after the top 1000 songs poll, and would love to submit a list of unvoted songs too, but I understand your concern about taking extra lists on Rob, so happy enough just listening to everyone's else songs!
I was faced with a choice at a difficult age. Would I write a book? Or should I take to the stage? But in the back of my head I heard distant feet. Che Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat.

Oooooohhh. I admit that I haven't been paying close attention to the Biggest Fan game, but after listening to a few of the songs on this list I feel that I should be participating. Anyway, I'm glad to have introduced this exhilarating funk rock tune to a few people on the forum who didn't know it. But I actually discovered it from one of Henrik's lists, so he's to thank or blame, depending on the score you gave it.

Better, I'm sure. I think that songs that are more ingrained in our systems will allow for more powerful responses. You see it very well in those weekly classics games on this forum, where unknown quantities don't stand a chance to famous songs.
Hymie wrote: As for scores being low, by definition these are songs that only one member here loves, so it's very likely that they either don't have wide appeal, or in my case, are mainly from an era and of styles that are now well known by most members here.
That's true to an extend. A big hit like Something Just Like This was probably known by most here, but not liked enough to get a top 1000 vote from them, so it figures that it would do badly here. However, there also so many songs out there, that the reason they only appear on one list is because only one person here knew about it. The general song here falls probably more in the middle of these extremes.
Romain wrote: Perhaps a suggestion to attract more voters, take a song not at random on all the lists, but by taking a song at random in each list and go around each forumers so as not to "disadvantage" them. (50 songs -> 50 separate forumers) ?
I'm not sure that will attract more voters, but it is an interesting approach that I might consider, although some people have few unique songs nominated and will be done quickly.
Henrik wrote: I have been thinking along the same lines as Romain about the random selections. Perhaps with a bigger chance of getting a song selected for people who are rating songs?
I'm not very fond of this. Perhaps people here attach more importance to having their song appear here than I thought, but if we are going to disadvantage some nominators we will also lose some of the entries of out most out-there-minded nominators (Fred, Sonofsamiam, Prosecutorgodot), which I think would be a shame.
spiritualized wrote: I like the idea of doing a "user-focused" random entry as well, but it favors the forumers who haven't had many entries...and therefore is not totally random anymore.
That's my concern as well, even if it isn't a big one. What works best for me I think is to allow one song each month per person. At the start of the month we start over and everybody can get a new one in. But since a month has less days then there are participants, we can somewhat favor people who have more unique votes. The songs are still random of course; I want to keep it that way.

Let me know what you all think. I have prepared all songs up and until Sunday, so any new selection system will probably start at Monday. What option do you prefer:

1. Keep selections completely random.
2. Go with a random song from each person, then start over.
3. Allow for only one nomination per user a month.

Here's what I'll do. I accept new lists by people, but under these conditions:

- Only people who didn't make a top 1000. Should be obvious.
- The list may only consists of songs that didn't get a single vote for the All Time Songs Poll. I leave it to you to find out if this is the case.
- Once the list is handed over to me, no changes can be made anymore.
- The list can contain no more than 210 songs. Why 210? That is the average amount on unique songs on all the combined lists.

I think that should be okay with most people.

Option 3 above is perfect, I think.

I'm quite happy with option 1. I have no particular desire to have songs I already know well introduced in a non-random fashion in this game.

As to the low scores: As an example - when I look at the scores for albums on metacritic, almost everything is scored between 60 & 90 on what is supposed to be a 100 point scale. If everything is going to be scored between 5 & 10, then why have a 10 point scale? I think quite a few people are using the full 1-10 scale here and I think that is a good thing. So I don't see a score of 5 as implying a bad song. In context, songs scoring over 7 on average is very impressive.

Thanks Rob, I'll send you a list as soon as I can.
And I'd vote for option 3.
I was faced with a choice at a difficult age. Would I write a book? Or should I take to the stage? But in the back of my head I heard distant feet. Che Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat.
