I’ll also give it a 7.

Empire of the Sun- Walking on a Dream: 8
A prime example of the indietronic pop that was all that rage during the late 2000s (see also: LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, Hot Chip, Phoenix, etc.). The chorus is very catchy and the melody is bittersweet, like 80% blissed out contentment, 20% pain.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
Yes, this one is doing exceptionally well. Especially considering there is hardly any common ground to be found here, with a lot of song being divisive, but really with most garnering a lot of low grades. I'm a bit surprised that this is the song to break the mould really, even if I like it too.andyd1010 wrote:I haven't tallied it up but it seems like Suddenly I See has gotten the best reception so far, which is pretty cool - surprising for a popular song with a fair amount of radio play and no acclaim to be secretly beloved. I came very close to voting for it and disqualifying it from this game. Another great bridge-into-final-chorus combo.
Anyway, Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream: 5
This one is doing well too, but this time I have a hard time agreeing. I very vaguely remember this song getting radio play when it came out, but I never noticed is was a big deal, but Spotify plays learn me otherwise. It's chorus is kinda nice, but overall it feels rather forgettable to me.
Here is the playlist again:

48. Nick Drake – Saturday Sun: 5
The Spotify streams show this is a popular track, but my least favourite from the album.
49. Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream: 5
Surprised this is getting such a good reception.
50. Britney Spears - Everytime: 4.5
C'mon, it's not that bad.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
Actually, yes it is. Listened to it first this morning as background music and it came across as mediocre, but unoffensive. Just now I heard it more closely and I thought it was really, really bad. The reason is simple: Britney Spears can't sing. I never thought much of her vocals, but now, hearing her do a heartfelt ballad, her limitations are completely exposed. She sounds weak and struggling. It makes for a grating listen. Musically and lyrically it is a standard ballad from the nineties (that somehow was made in 2005), but the voice is below that standard. Easily one of the worst songs from this whole poll for me.DaveC wrote: 50. Britney Spears - Everytime: 4.5

After a couple of hits and even more AM approved songs we now get a song that wasn’t a hit, doesn’t come from a mainstream band and doesn’t have much streams either:

Year: 1986
Album: The Big Shot Chronicles
Biggest Fan: Listyguy (#368)

This band has appeared in several games here before and never made much of an impression on me. I wouldn't say I'm impressed with this song, but it is rather welcome.

43. Rooney – When Did Your Heart Go Missing? - 5
Great instrumental backing to an unimpressive lyrical part. Maybe I'd have liked it better in the hands of a different band.
44. John Mellencamp - What If I Came Knocking - 6
45. Tyler, The Creator, featuring Frank Ocean & Steve Lacy – 911/Mr. Lonely - 8
This song is dense, with a lot I would need to unpack to figure out how I feel about it. I like a lot of it though, even if it feels like two songs combined in the machine from The Fly
46. Guns ‘N Roses - Prostitute - 5
47. Cocteau Twins – Frou-frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires - 7
First I've heard from them that really grabbed me, I'll have to look at this album more later.
48. Nick Drake – Saturday Sun - 6
49. Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream - 8
Nostalgic, takes me right back to high school. I enjoy the vocals, and overall it's just nice and chilled-out.
50. Britney Spears - Everytime - 4
I quite like this version by Glen Hansard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh2o5OJjdYs

#31. Girls In Hawaii - Catwalk 5/10
#32. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue 3/10
#39. KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See 4/10
Catchy, upbeat pop - but I just don't 'see' it - suddenly or otherwise.
#46. Guns N' Roses - Prostitute 6/10
Never listened to any song off Chinese Democracy all the way through. Not as bad as I thought it would/could have been. Considering the money thrown at making this album - the song doesn't sound cheap.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
The three songs I posted for this weekend all happen to belong to the top of what we heard yet.
Eminem - Drug Ballad: 8
I haven't heard much of Eminem's output of, say, the last 10 years, but listening to Drug Ballad - just an album track - reminds me how great he can be when he is on point.
The Heavy – How You Like Me Now: 8
The best of the three and a great discovery, as I wasn't aware of The Heavy. This is a good counterpoint to originality discussion fro earlier. This is not an original song at all, but you can really feel the heart and soul put into this.
Joan Baez – Silver Dagger: 8
I knew this one. Joan Baez is pretty safe with me, as I like her branch of folk and her lovely voice.

51. Game Theory – Like a Girl Jesus
Good good good, I like it. I'm a fan of ethereal voices. 7.5/10
52. Eminem - Drug Ballad
Too bad for the female voice, too r'n'b for my taste, otherwise, as usual, Eminem is very good.7/10
53. The Heavy – How You Like Me Now
Between this one and the song from "Unacclaimed V: Heats, Week 2", The Heavy clearly falls into the category "band to follow"... I loved both songs. 8/10
54. Joan Baez – Silver Dagger
I have a lot of trouble with her voice and the genre is far from being my favorite. 4/10
55. Minnie Riperton – Inside My Love
On the other hand, it's hard to be wrong when you put this kind of music on me, which I particularly cherish. 6.5/10

Nice bunch of songs !!
46. Guns N' Roses - Prostitute (5.5) Actually quite surprised. The whiny, nose -singing of Axl takes a step back and that makes the song THAT much better.
47. Cocteau Twins - Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires (8)
48. Nick Drake - Saturday Sun (8)
49. Empire Of The Sun - Walking On A Dream (7.5)
50. Britney Spears - Everytime (4) reminds me of Whitney Houston without the voice.
51. Game Theory – Like a Girl Jesus (5)
52. Eminem - Drug Ballad (8)
53. The Heavy – How You Like Me Now (7.5)
54. Joan Baez – Silver Dagger (7) there is another version of this song which I prefer.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
Can't keep track of all songs, but I'm gonna rate some I listened to and liked:
Los Saicos - Demolición: 8
Just great stupid fun with amazing energy.
Monks – I Hate You: 7
Almost in the same vein, just a little more sophisticated and ominous.
Britney Spears - Everytime: 6
I don't get all the hate. This is as good as radio-friendly pop ballads get.
Joan Baez – Silver Dagger: 9
Sounded very familiar, turns out Saint Etienne's Like A Motorway was based on this. I prefer the original. It's amazingly beautiful and already a personal favourite.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
Yes, we are on a roll at the moment.
Minnie Riperton – Inside My Love: 8
A sex song whose lyrics on paper would probably sound kind of trashy, but Riperton can make them sound subtle, without losing the sexiness. I only knew her of Les Fleurs, but thanks to this song I already listened to the parent album and will probably listen to more in the days to come. She has an appealing voice and she knows how to use it in different ways. Also, apparently she is the mother to Maya Rudolp, which is cool too.

She has an appealing voice and she knows how to use it in different ways. Also, apparently she is the mother to Maya Rudolp, which is cool too.

#31. Girls In Hawaii - Catwalk 5/10
#32. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue 3/10
#33.
#34.
#35. Avenged Sevenfold - Fiction 3/10
#36.
#37.
#38.
#39. KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See 4/10
Catchy, upbeat pop - but I just don't 'see' it - suddenly or otherwise.
#40.
#41.
#42.
#43.
#44.
#45.
#46. Guns N' Roses - Prostitute 7/10
Never listened to any song off Chinese Democracy all the way through. Not as bad as I thought it would/could have been. Considering the money thrown at making this album - the song doesn't sound cheap.
#47. Cocteau Twins - Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires 7/10
#48. Nick Drake - Saturday Sun 7/10
I'm not really a fan of 'folk music' and Nick Drake's stuff generally but I didn't mind this track.
#49. Empire Of The Sun - Walking On A Dream 9/10
#50. Britney Spears - Everytime 2/10
Everytime I hear this song, I think, 'No'.
#51. Game Theory - Like A Girl Jesus 4/10
#52. Eminem - Drug Ballad 5/10
#53. The Heavy - How You Like Me Now? 8/10
Very much indeed!
#54. Joan Baez - Silver Dagger - 3/10
#55. Minnie Ripperton - Inside My Love 6/10
I was surprised that I quite liked this.

Janet Jackson - If: 5
My dislike of Janet Jackson is documented well enough, but this one isn't as bland as most of her songs. It is a bit of a mess on the other hand.

This was my one Janet Jackson entry in my Women in Music list. Edit: Oh, what the hell, I don't especially mind pulling the trigger on a 10 rating.

51. Game Theory – Like a Girl Jesus - 5
52. Eminem - Drug Ballad - 7
Surprisingly good! But this is the same album as Stan so clearly he was on a roll.
53. The Heavy – How You Like Me Now - 9
Love this song
54. Joan Baez – Silver Dagger - 8
Gorgeous
55. Minnie Riperton – Inside My Love - 7
Solid song, and a beautiful voice
56. Janet Jackson - If - 4
Trying to find the lyrics under the music was like cutting through a dense jungle. I'd probably like this if it was mixed differently.
