Unacclaimed V: Heats, Week 2

Post by Bang Jan »

The way this game works is that you will be given two sets of four songs, your job is to rank each of the sets from best to worst. First place gets 4 points, second gets 3 etc.

The song with the most points in each set will advance to the semi-finals. If there is a tie for points, then the song with more first place votes will advance. If they are tied on first place votes as well, there will be a sudden death tiebreak. Also the six highest scoring non-winners in the heat stage (based off point per voter and then percentage of first place votes) will also advance to the semi-finals.

Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Wednesday at 15:00 UTC.

Iggy Pop | Little Know It All

Two upbeat R&B songs from different eras in this group. Do I Do features some very nifty bass work by Nathan Watts, but Saved is even more fun. Iggy Pop featuring Sum 41 could have worked for me, but didn't in this case.

GROUP DELTA
Mitski | Texas Reznikoff
Gilberto Gil | Quilombo, o el Dorado Negro
Cage the Elephant | Ain't No Rest for the Wicked
Ennio Morricone | Chi Mai

Loved the Mitski one. I also enjoyed Gilberto Gil, having no connection to Bossa Nova whatsoever. Chi Mai seemed kind of familiar, and it turns out it was kind of a hit in Europe in 1981, a decade after its original release. I still think it probably works better in a movie context.

Gotta say, I do actually have a deep love for Sum 41, as my ballot for the guilty pleasures tournament can attest - not to as much success as I'd hoped here. Seems like a little too much reverence for Iggy Pop for the track's good. I might be alone on this, but the Stevie track feels slightly like Stevie attempting to do a Michael Jackson song - incredible bass wizardry notwithstanding. The Lavern Baker track doesn't do much for me and The Heavy's track is the standout from this group for sure.

I was surprised to see the Cage the Elephant track in this mix - but sure enough, not acclaimed or on an acclaimed album. Definitely love this track, especially after the chance to see them play it live at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas a few years back. The Morricone track is an absolute beauty - interesting to hear drums with this style on an otherwise filmic underscore piece. The Gilberto Gil track didn't do much for me to be honest. And the more I listen to Mitski, the more I think that she's an artist only in the business of writing masterpieces. The amount of understated craftsmanship in any of her tracks astounds me.

Somehow we managed to get the two Borderlands theme songs (Ain't No Rest and Short Change Hero) in the same week. And not only that, but they're my two favourite songs of these lists!

The Heavy-Short Change Hero (UK)
Stevie Wonder-Do I Do (USA)
Iggy Pop feat. Sum 41-Little Know it All (USA/CAN)
LaVern Baker-Saved (USA)

This group was STACKED though!

Cage the Elephant-Ain't No Rest for the Wicked (USA)
Gilberto Gil-Quilombo, o el Dorado Negro (BRA)
Ennio Morricone-Chi Mai (ITA)
Mitski-Texas Reznikoff (USA)

Best Discovery this Week: "Gilberto Gil-Quilombo, o el Dorado Negro"

This week makes me wish I nominated "How You Like Me Now", which I was planning. Oh, well. Maybe Unacclaimed VI.

It's Bizarro-week for me. One of the only Cage the Elephant songs I like; a rare Stevie song I don't; a Brazilian song that seems like something I'd typically love, but doesn't connect with me for some reason (and it's the second week in a row for that!). Well, at least there's the always dependable Morricone and one of my favorites from the great voice of LaVern.
