Yes, I would like to hear from the people who don't like "Buddy Holly," and thoughts on Weezer in general.
As someone who is “not a fan” of 2 of the 3 Weezer songs that made this list, I should probably respond. I hope what I’m going to say won’t come across as derogatory, but I suspect it might.

I was a teenager in the 1990s and lived in both South Africa and the UK; very far removed from the US. There were a few things about American culture at the time that I didn’t get. A prime example of that was American slackers… people who sat around smoking pot and playing video games and listening to bland rock music that didn’t have any of the danceability of pop, or any of the punch of punk or hard rock; guitar music that just lazily plodded along without much oomph or excitement. And to me Weezer represented that kind of music. So… er… I guess what I’m trying to say is that Weezer mostly sounds like dumb American slacker rock to me.

Maybe if I paid closer attention to the band’s sound and their lyrics, I will realise that what they created in the 90s was anything but dumb music. And of course, the idea that Weezer’s style of music can only be appreciated by Americans is nonsense. There are many non-American critics and fans and AM regulars with an excellent taste in music (e.g. Nassim) who love them and totally get them.

“Buddy Holly” has grown on me a lot. In fact, I placed it at #61 for this poll, which is much higher than I thought I’d rank it. It has a certain drive and catchiness that many of Weezer’s other songs lack, in my opinion. So maybe I’m slowly getting there in terms of appreciating the band a bit more.

But… do they deserve to have THREE songs in our list of the 150 best tunes of the 1990s, considering that thousands and thousands of other songs were released that decade? Slacker please. No.
...will keep us together.

Appreciate the response! I mostly see where you're coming from. I can see how the first half of Say It Ain't So can seem bland, but I absolutely love the opening riff, which sets the tone for a very smooth vibe that I really enjoy. And then the song picks up, from the chorus to a passionate bridge that leads into a great guitar solo and then a climactic final chorus - a style that someone else voiced a love for in my bridge thread, but that I can tell doesn't resonate with everyone.

It has plenty of punch and excitement as far as I'm concerned, but it's a different kind of punch than those other styles. I feel that excitement especially in these lines:
"This way is a water slide away from me that takes you further every day. So be cool."
"Like father, stepfather, the son is drowning in the flood. Yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah-yeah!"
And the way his final "Say It Ain't So" both serves as a climactic moment and seamlessly brings the song full circle, back to the cool, relaxed vibe it started with and closing with that riff. I also love the way the guitar picks up in the background of the chorus as the song progresses.

And in my opinion, Weezer is one of the catchiest bands out there - Buddy Holly is just outrageously catchy.

Always nice to see my name appear after such compliments, thanks, but I should say I'm not that big a fan of Weezer. I think they have 3 truly terrific songs (El Scorcho, My Name is Jones and Undone (The Sweater Song)), a bunch of good ones, but their only album I sometimes listen to is the Blue Album and I'd rank it somewhere in my 200-300 all time rank.

I'm also going to reply. I hardly listened to any Weezer before this poll, so I can't say that much about them. I did end up liking Say It Isn't So quite a bit, while I'm indifferent to El Scorcho. But Buddy Holly, which indeed ranks low in my list, is the very reason I never payed Weezer any mind. It is the only song I remember ever hearing on the radio and from I've always thought it was annoying. Like a somebody tried to make a subdued doo wop song. I dislike the way Rivers Cuomo tries to sing a cutesy, alternative love song, but at the same time sounds to ironic and knowing to go for it, like he is a little above having real fun. I can kind of recognize myself in the comment by Dan that some '90's music can be a little too slacker, a bit too-cool-to-care, which makes it hard to connect to for me. Someone like Beck can get away with it, because he has real wit and too much interest in music to be a real slacker, but before Say It Isn't So I thought there was no drive in Weezer.

At #38 we have the highest ranked song that didn't make the decade poll in our previous 1990s songs poll. This song is also the penultimate song ranked over #200 on AM for the 1990s. The final song ranked over #200 on AM won't show up for a little while.

A lot of the confusion about Weezer's popularity resonates with me. Their debut album is fine, and it has a few great singles, but the rest of their discography is very iffy. And I'll admit, part of my negative opinion towards Weezer is because of how popular they are among people my age (20's), and also just how ridiculous the band became as the years passed.

I like Pinkerton better than the debut. I think after that they kind of doubled down on their nerdy indiosyncracies but couldn't put together catchy melodies anymore.

Harriet Wheeler from the sundays has one of my favorite voices of all time - very pleasantly suprised to see Here's Where the Story Ends appear so high!

I haven't been keeping track of every song that's left, but "Waltz #2" has to be one of the more surprising entries to our top 20, right?

It ended up 9th in 2012, a good result for that (best of all time) song is not unusual in AM!

Didn't realize it was that high last time, I've always assumed "Between the Bars" was the gold standard for Elliott Smith, but it's ranked below "Waltz #2" on the main site as well...

4 of the top 15 from Radiohead.

That is dominance in my view, despite my relatively lukewarm responses to many of Radiohead's songs.

30% of the top 10 is Radiohead. More dominance. I enjoy the remaining Radiohead songs as much as any of their offerings.

How many Radiohead songs in the top 5? Could be all 3, but more likely 2.

Important to note, however, that Buckley's version is actually a cover of John Cale's "definitive" cover/reinterpretation:

Thank you, DaveC.

I wasn't sure that Nirvana was a foregone conclusion. Nice to see that Radiohead can't quite have it all. (They'll just have to settle for 3 in the top 10, and the #1 album.)

R.I.P.

Some of the people who helped those artists to get through last time didn't participate in the 1990s polls last year, which goes a long way to explaining the omissions. I guess I just miss a time when the forum felt more international and people seemed to be more open to non-anglophone music. But such is life, right? Things change. And it's not like there's a lack of quality (whatever that means) in the 150 songs that are being counted down at the moment. I'm looking forward to the rest of the roll-out and will be following it closely.
All is not lost, "O Pastor", "Sodade" and "Chan Chan" all came close. I was a bit shocked that only you & I voted for "Yah Rayah". Maybe we need another World Music Cup or Foreign World Cup.

Yes, the top 11 is all alternative rock, which raises the question to what exactly it is an alternative. Apart from Candida Doyle (Pulp) there are no women in the top 11. I voted for several world music artists, like Värttinä, I Muvrini, Madredeus, Youssou N'Dour, Ali Farka Touré, Angélique Kidjo and Noa, but without much hope for support.

Thanks for the great rollout DaveC!

This is my first time participating in one of the decade polls. I guess I would describe the Top Songs as "safe" picks. All highly recognizable artists. Not bad songs at all, I only dislike one, but maybe a tad bit predictable. Perhaps with this format the less-known artists are inevitably going to end up in the last third of songs.

Great stuff, AMF participersons, great stuff. You make me feel like 32 again and I mean that in a parallel-universed good-spirited way.

Great job, Dave C! I am lot surprised that, after 20 years, some mainstream acts like Green Day, Foo Fighters and RHCP have grown as some of the most acclaimed artists of the decade. I’m specially glad to see Britpop being remembered, since, some 10 years ago, it looked like its value was diminishing with time.
