Firstly - TreasureTV is a cool name, I hope you're able to get that domain.

It's so cool to see how far you've gotten in such a short time! Also, it's cool to see Archer and some anime series on this list :-D

Out of completely academic interest, how many series have been mentioned at least once by this point?

Hey, thanks! Not sure about what you mean by "how many series have been mentioned at least once by this point". Do you mean something like how many series have appeared in the several top 100 lists I've posted so far? Most of the top 50 hasn't changed.

Yeah, it was interesting to see how some animated series compared to the much more popular, live-action ones. I think more anime might sneak in the top 100 as I add more foreign lists.

If you're curious about anime outside the top 100, here's what the highest ranking ones are:
#123. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011)
#124. Attack on Titan (2013)
#130. Steins;Gate (2011)
#135. Code Geass (2006)
#139. Death Note (2006)
#148. Gurren Lagann (2007)
#157. Gintama (2006)
#159. Fate/Zero (2011)
#170. Hunter x Hunter (2011)

It's very strange to me how there's much more love for modern anime, while older ones which I thought would've been pretty high like Dragon Ball Z, Berserk, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Astro Boy aren't even in the top 250. Maybe this is a problem of the sources that I am using, but I've run into several anime-based sites that have a stronger taste for newer anime.

Any critically acclaimed kids series, such as Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Spongebob, Gravity Falls, Avatar (both Korra and ATLA), make it high?

I remember SpongeBob was in the top 100 for a while, but has dropped below recently.

#128. SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
#186. The Ren & Stimpy Show (1991)
#271. Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
#299. Animaniacs (1993)
#320. The Powerpuff Girls (1998)
#338. Adventure Time (2010)
#426. Samurai Jack (2001)
#440. The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008)
#1243. Gravity Falls (2012)
#1263. Steven Universe (2013)
#1326. The Legend of Korra (2012)
#2108. Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2015)
#2471. Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (2015)

Cartoons seemed to have taken the opposite route that Anime did, with older cartoons like The Flintstones getting more love than the new ones. It's strange... I've hunting down lists that focus on these types of shows, but they seem to be either quite rare or are too small to make a big difference. It sucks because I think plenty of these shows are much more worthy of being in the top 250 than say American Idol, Glee, or Full House.

Wow! Thanks for putting this together! Great to see some of my favorites on here (The Wonder Years, The Twilight Zone, Six Feet Under). Of course, there are some shows high up that I absolutely loathe, just like AM.

That show's at #2959.

Part of the problem is that live-action TV, especially dramas, are much more popular and tend to occupy most of the spots on the lists I see. Legendary shows like The Looney Tunes miss out as a result, so its pretty great to see that Cowboy Bebop and Batman: The Animated Series have somehow made it as high as they have.

Your welcome :)

Yeah, that was one of the most annoying parts of this project, seeing many shows that I hate get so much praise, especially over shows that are much more worthy of attention. As someone who hates reality TV, it made my stomach turn seeing so many of those shows in the top 500.

There's also Pokemon, a show that hits a personal nerve. As someone who grew up with that show, I can't tell you how much I hate seeing it on lists, especially on "Best Anime" lists. It's almost an perfect indicator of someone who really doesn't know what they are talking about and are going purely off the popularity of a show. You can't tell me that a show like that is somehow better than Wolf's Rain, FLCL, and Berserk, especially when its ripoffs Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh understood basic storytelling and characterization much better than show ever did. And there's also Pokemon Generations, which is also superior to that show in literally every way.

Haha, sorry, rant over.

Animation, in both movies and series, have still an outsider status. There are some exceptions: Disney, Pixar, Ghibli and series with a specific adult appeal like The Simpsons and South Park. Usually though, people are really into animation or totally not. Many publications and websites don't pay particular attention to animation or have someone on the side to write about it. Part of the reason is that networks still separate animation programming from live-action ones. Perhaps The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy fare so well, because they are not separate. Many publications don't look at Cartoon Network. Anime is even more a thing on it's own. It has a huge fanbase, but it is still a subculture, with less overlap. It might be changing slowly, but certainly not completely. Exceptions like Cowboy Bebop (for anime) or Rick and Morty (for Western animation) are more exceptions that prove the rule.

So yeah, Pokémon is a lazy choice from people that hardly pay attention to a style. Personally, I think Dragon Ball Z is even worse - one of the worst written series that I followed for some time (before getting truly sick of it), so I'm glad that one doesn't do as well even though it could have been an easy token pick.

Thanks for the info! I would LOVE to include these types of lists voted on by the public, as I feel it would filter out a lot of hate-worthy shows for me like American Idol. I even considered possibly including the IMDB top 250 in my calculations, but part of the problem is that these types of lists are always changing, and it would be a nightmare to constantly change my calculations to accommodate this. I would love it if there was a way to program these changes to automatically happen, haha.

To each his own, I guess I have a hatred for the Pokemon anime that might be too extreme, haha. I just hate how emblematic that show has become for the 90's generation and anime in general. So many people I know look fondly on the show, but I don't have the nostalgia goggles that they do. There are so many shows that are more worth your time than that one, even the Pokemon Generations shorts did a better job at storytelling. I would love it if the Pokemon anime would just die and get rebooted.

I've personally always been a bigger fan of the lore of Dragon Ball than any of its series. I've tried watching those shows and the pacing is just too painfully slow for me to sit through. One of the reasons why I hate Super is because of how much I think it fucked up the lore. That's just my opinion though. A lot of older anime isn't doing so well in the rankings. It seems that much like with live-action drama shows like The Sopranos, the general consensus is that newer shows are better than older ones. Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion are somehow the exceptions, but most of the other high ranking anime is from the last decade.

Haha, well the lowest ranked show is at #3209, however most of the shows populating this area have only appeared on one list usually as an honorable mention. To get a more reliable top 1000, I plan to reach 1000 lists, but easier said than done.

I'm gonna be taking a break amidst some job hunting that I'm going through. I would love to fully dedicate myself to this project and learn how to code so I could use a better program than the Excel that I've been using thus far, but unfortunately there's a lot in my personal life getting in the way. I've gotten pretty far tho, so its exciting!

Any way to view the list without watching a video?

Also, a top 100 of all time list with no Star Trek? There should be at least 3. Most lists have 2. :)

I put the list in the video's description, but YouTube is having a moment, so it might not be there depending on your browser.

Star Trek is on the list, but only the classic series and TNG. Sorry, I didn't make the list, I just calculated it :)

Mostly, all the shows that I think are great and are more than a few years old end up on top 100 lists, with the exception of DS9. No idea how that show became so underrated.

Also, which Office is 23 and which is 28? Usually UK is slightly ahead, but I'd love to see the other way around.

Also, which Office is 23 and which is 28? Usually UK is slightly ahead, but I'd love to see the other way around.
*facepalm* I forgot to add the distinction. I just fixed it. The UK one is ahead. I'm only really familiar with the US one, and only a bit, so I don't really have a strong opinion on which one is better.

But yeah, I think I would wanna watch all of these shows at some point, maybe with the exception of 90210, not my thing. I'm simultaneously watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Arrested Development right now, and both appear to be excellent shows so far.

Deep Space 9 is actually doing quite well all things considered. That show is sitting at #147. If you're curious about Star Trek, here's how all the shows are currently ranked:

#36. Star Trek (1966)
#43. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)
#147. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)
#501. Star Trek: Voyager (1995)
#1643. Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973)
#1672. Star Trek: Discovery (2017)

I think a forum poll of the best TV series would be a fun one for people to participate in.

Petri stated that he will host a TV show poll if at least ten people will vote in the Women Directors Poll (http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=5&t=6248), so anyone who has not yet voted in the poll should do so, so that we can do the TV show poll next.

If it's not too troubling to type it out, what are #111-250?

This might interest some of you. The Sopranos, Mad Men, and The Wire are the only TV shows in the top 10 that aren't connected. Although it's not listed The Simpsons are connected through The X-Files. The Simpsons would connect The Critic, Futurama, Family Guy, King of the Hill, etc.

I've debunked the theory based on the idea of "metafiction" (fiction within fiction).

It could have been possible Tommy just integrated elements from the shows he liked into his fantasies. And I think elements like the Firefly cameo in BSG and the use of Yoyodine (David Arquette and Angel were both referencing Pynchon) are stretching it. Also by this logic, WE are part of the dream. Since Michael Bloomberg is the Mayor of New York in the universe of Law and Order.

Also no overlap with Dallas or Newhart. So is every show just three dreams?

Oh, and also Rick and Morty would break this because they cross over into EVERY universe.

Eh, 100? I don't know where I could find time to shove 100 TV series in my life since I've started working... I have very fond memories of Jericho though.

Has there ever been any more progress towards running a top TV series poll here? I'd be very interested in participating.

It also looks like Nel_Valen's video in the OP is no longer available, which is a shame.

Yeah sorry about that, I privated the video cause it was really outdated.

In the positive side, my project is almost done. Expect a major update soon!

I've updated my site to a Top 500 now. I'm still working on updating the other lists in the site, but you can view the current Top 500 Best TV shows here: https://www.treasuretv.org/all-time

I expect a giant shift in the rankings once Disney+ starts its service, and an even greater shift once this year ends as it will be the official end of the 2010s!

Absolutely fantastic - so excited to dive into this - thank you. Currently working on my own top 100 end-of-decade list, this might help me discover a few more gems.

You're welcome! I'm working on the genre and network lists, but its gonna take a while to complete since it takes a ton of research. I'll be adding these lists as I complete them.

I watched the entire run of The Leftovers for the first time over the last few weeks and I'm thrilled to see it cleaning up on these EOD lists.

My personal favourite of the decade by a fairly comfortable margin.

Thanks for the new lists folks! Been very busy with work and life lately, but I plan to make one more update soon, after all the EOY and EOD lists come out (probably around January/February of 2020).

A lot of lists go beyond the 20 shows limit, should factor greatly in the update. Thanks for making this site!

Thank you for pointing me here! You would think I would've thought of going to metacritic for more lists before, but it totally slipped my mind.

All of these decade end lists are really shaking up the rankings. It looks like the show that will benefit the most from these lists will be Fleabag; it is currently #126 but is looking to jump into the top 50!

On the other hand, the lack of support for Cobra Kai is not cool

Glad to see SpongeBob hit the top 100. I feel critics fail to see the show's impact, especially on internet culture.

ValenN, have you considered adding individual pages for shows that include each series' various rankings/appearances on the lists you use, similar to AM? I'd love to see it added in an update down the road.
