I didn't play a whole lot of new games this year, but from the ones I played:

1. Persona 5

This is on my shortlist of best games ever. I already loved the Persona series, but this comes back with an amazing theme of secretly infiltrating the subconscious of rich powerful people who do evil things and get away with it to make them give up their distorted desires and confess. Combine that with the best social links they've ever written, very creative dungeons replacing randomly generated ones. Not to mention that this is the longest game I've ever played at 96 hours, second longest clocked in at 65 hours, and I never got bored once.

2. Tales of Berseria

Another 20 year old series to release its best installment. A series that's usually rife with shonen cliches and idealistic youths discovering the power of the friendship, we're hit with a story about a woman whose stepbrother sacrifices her brother in an arcane ritual, is then transformed into a demon that devours other demons by grabbing them with her monstrous hand, and goes off on a revenge quest against her stepbrother. Some of the best characters in the series and some great ARPG combat.

3. Super Mario Odyssey

A good game, but still serves as kind of a letdown because I was hoping for another Galaxy. It is fun, absolutely, but it doesn't deliver what previous installments did. Instead of a small amount of challenging stars which all seem unique, there's a HUGE amount of trivially easy moons, most of which are all the same. There's over 800 moons! A few of them are fun, namely the main story progression moons and the hat door moons that have platforming challenges. The rest are, jump rope 100 times, do some silly minigame about building Mario faces, butt stomp every square inch of floor in the entire damn game. Very few moons are individually challenging, so even though the mechanics of the game are awesome, there's zero actual challenge or thrill in the level design.

4. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is also a good game, very good to be the worst new game I played in the year. Main mechanics of the game are great, but I couldn't get into it for the same reason I had trouble with Odyssey. Previous Zelda games were designed around long, involved dungeons, this one had a lot of short, easy challenges.

I don't want my games to have a huge amount of two minute activities, I want a smaller amount of longer, more intricate challenges.
