Watchmen is staying on the list right? Like it becomes #3? Or is it being replaced completely?

Here's something. I have probably forgotten to add numerous favorites of mine. There are also zillions of graphic novel and comics artists that I excluded because it was hard to choose (or the stories would be probably ineligible). People like Will Eisner (his graphic novels not Spirit), Hergé, Guy Delisle, Lewis Trondheim, Kati Kovács, and of course Carl Barks to name just a few.

There are many books in the list that don't have English translation (or I'm not aware of that).

Listyguy I can submit my list also in a format where author is first if you prefer that format.
Very interested to see the results.

It's the first volume from In Search of Lost Time.
ISOLT is practically 7 different books. They can stand on their own.
Regarding counting you can do as you want, either take it separately or add to ISOLT's tally.

Can I still vote although it's way after the deadline? If not, you can disregard my mediocre top ten list, which is as follows…

1) Nineteen Eighty-Four | George Orwell
2) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy | Douglas Adams
3) Ender’s Game | Orson Scott Card
4) The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid | Bill Bryson
5) Slaughterhouse-Five | Kurt Vonnegut
6) Mistborn | Brandon Sanderson
7) Fahrenheit 451 | Ray Bradbury
8) Animal Farm | George Orwell
9) The Graveyard Book | Neil Gaiman
10) His Dark Materials Trilogy | Philip Pullman

I didn't include any plays in my list (because I've always viewed plays as form of art primarily meant to be seen or performed as opposed to read, and as such it appeared a case of "apples and oranges" to list them alongside novels, though certainly no disrespect to those who felt differently as we all have our own subjective idea of what the criteria for such a list should be), but if I did a couple Shakespeare plays definitely would've made the cut, such as Hamlet and Othello.

Excited to see the final results!

Only novels for me. Like Nick, I just couldn’t figure out where to place plays – or graphic novels, short story collections, and epic poems. Unfortunately that leaves out some of my favorite things (Homer, Shakespeare, Dante, Milton, Chekhov, etc.), but most of them seem pretty well-represented here anyway.

Ok, unless anybody else alerts me that they are planning on submitting a list, voting is now closed! Expect the rollout of the results to start at the end of this week/beginning of next week!

Incredible list Greg! I'm in awe at the sheer volume of reading that you must have done to compile that list. Truly commendable.

I'll submit my own list, just for fun.

In Scotland, we like to tell ourselves that we have produced a disproportionate volume of important literature. Unlike the claim that we are more socialistic or community-spirited than other parts of the UK, I think this one might be true, but it's impossible to tell with any certainty. For now, I'll content myself with saying there are a number of Scottish novels that I really love, and I've highlighted them in bold below.

1. The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
2. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
3. Bonfire Of The Vanities by Tom Wolfe
4. Lanark by Alasdair Gray
5.The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger
6. Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
7. The Grapes Of Wrath by John Steinbeck
8. The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend
9. Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
10. A Disaffection by James Kelman
11. No Word From Gurb by Eduardo Mendoza
12. The Trick Is To Keep Breathing by Janice Galloway
13. The Private Memoirs And Confessions Of A Justified Sinner by James Hogg

14. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
15. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
16. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
17. Treasure Island by R. L. Stevenson
18. Its Colours They Are Fine by Alan Spence

19. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
20. Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
