AMF's Top Video Games of All Time (2021 Edition): RESULTS!

Post by mileswide »

Hello from the other thread! The time has come for us to find out what we as a forum have deemed The Top Video Games of All Time! Thank you to everyone who has devoted their time to compiling their lists and/or advised me on the particulars of the poll, you've all made what was already an enjoyable undertaking as straightforward as possible. We had 16 participants, namely:

andyd1010
Arsalan
BleuPanda
Edre Peraza
Emerald
FrankLotion
Krurze
Live in Phoenix
mjf314
mileswide
Nassim
Nick
ordinaryperson
Schüttelbirne
Vacantjoy
ValenN

Considering these 16 voters chose 791 different titles, not everyone's favourite games made the cut, so let's start by showcasing the nominations that received a sole #1 placing and nothing from anyone else:

Emerald's #1: Shenmue 1&2 (1999 & 2001)

ordinaryperson's #1: Mother 3 (2006)

Right, now we've reached the top 100! I'll aim for a presentation of 20 entries a day, which might or might not slow down when we start the top 20.

Each entry will be prefaced with a quote from the game, then one from a review of the game. The latter will be an excerpt of a professional review sourced from Metacritic in most cases but I may resort to user reviews from Rate Your Music's gaming sister site, Glitchwave, which will also provide the listed primary and secondary genres for each game as well as the title's rank on said site. This will accompany the game's rank from Play That Game, a games review aggregation site many of you will know is run by AMF user Mulholland.

Either side of this information will be the relevant game's applicable platforms and its poll results as well as the name of all of its 'fans', not just the highest voters. A photo of the box art for one of the game's editions will be placed next to a screenshot from the appropriate version as ever.

But if I go on any more, I'll run an even greater risk of confusing or boring you all, so let the rollout commence! Do feel free to comment or ask questions at any time though:

Full disclosure about the above edits: I had to update the Donkey Kong Country 3 screenshot and the setting I've selected means it shouldn't expire now. I'd also forgotten to cut andyd1010's ballot from 40 to 39 after he chose not to replace Pokémon Yellow at #37. Luckily, that only affected Rock Band 2, which has leapfrogged The Wind Waker. No other changes!

Another thing I forgot to mention! The underlining of some of the platforms indicates our forum's preference for the platform in question e.g. both mjf314 and Nassim suggested that they preferred the original Super Nintendo edition of Yoshi's Island, so SNES gets underlined in that entry.

Hope that's clear :music-rockon: (has the headbanging emoji disappeared mid-post??)

Looks like my #5 is getting in. I maybe underrated it, but it's also gotten on my nerves in the last year.

I’m truly impressed by the amount of detail you’ve put into all these entries!

This list is already full of surprises, I never would’ve expected Half-Life or Mother 3 to not make the top 100, or for Super Monkey Ball 2 to make the cut (which I’m clearly a fan of).

There are 3 games in that section (INSIDE, THPS 3 and Final Fantasy IX) that I think are better than a lot of games I actually put in my list, but I still didn't vote for because I remember feeling let down compared to the previous game(s) in the serie (or compared to LIMBO for INSIDE)... still probably should have put INSIDE in my list (less regrets for the other 3)

Talking about Pokémon Go, right? The pace has gotten crazy. And (obviously) there's no real end to the game. Usually I just play games that can be beaten, or games like Asteroids where your character dies pretty quickly.

#1 Play That Game is Tetris. #1 Glitchwave is Bloodborne, but Bloodborne was one of the runners-up, so I'm not sure what you mean.
If you look at the chart page, it does indeed place Bloodborne at number 1 https://glitchwave.com/charts/top/game/all-time/ but Silent Hill 2's page shows our #36 at the top https://glitchwave.com/game/silent-hill-2/

I can't be certain but I'd imagine the chart page reflects the order of the most recent update, rather than being a real-time ranking. If it's anything like RYM, it'll be done weekly, so there can always be movements in between. In any case, we were both right!

Not many people know this but they're actually the same game, Rockstar just removed 'I' from the title and hoped no one would notice ;) I'll have to take your word for it as the only GTA I've played is Vice City but I've swapped the screenshot for one that I'm more reliably informed is from 4, thanks either way Krurze!

Sorry, that fans section for Half-Life 2 was wholly wrong, but I've now rectified it in its entirety, ta for the tip-off!

Addendum: Just the fans section was wrong, I'd actually got the right data on my spreadsheet, so the score for Half-Life 2 is unchanged.

Pretty sure it doesn’t change the ranking but I think you put Krurze instead of me in the Biggest Fans section of Metroid Prime, still think the presentation has been amazing so far :music-rockon:

Correct on both counts (i.e. you should be there instead of Krurze obviously and the score hasn't altered at all) but I appreciate you highlighting it! While on that entry, I remembered the fact I'm English and added a 'u' to 'vapour', which accounts for the second edit to that post.

The rollout emphasizes newer games, so the top 10 is pretty wide open to me. There are only a few games that come to mind, and I'm not sure how many votes they got.

I'm surprised to see the original Zelda above A Link to the Past, because I thought most people like A Link to the Past more. Actually the votes seem to agree with this, because 3 of the 4 people who voted for both games gave a better rank to A Link to the Past.

Does it though? Only 2 of the games in the 11-20 range came out in the past 15 years. I guess it's all just a matter of perspective, but to me, games that came out in the 1990s are definitely "older" games (I was born in 1991 for what it's worth).

Yeah, "newer" is kind of a meaningless description unless you played games when I mostly played them.

I hope I'm not revealing too much but, similar to what Nick's said about the previous block of ten, only 3 games from the past decade appear in our top 10.

You're doing a great job with the rollout!

On a side-note, I've noticed 2 correction errors with the games listed. The image you put for Shenmue II, came out in 2001, not 2004. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is listed as one game on Glitchwave, at #216.

Ta Emerald! I've modified the release year for Shenmue 1&2 to 1999 and 2001 respectively, while adding the Glitchwave rank for Sonic & Knuckles of 216 in brackets but keeping the Sonic 3 placing of 488. Let me know if this isn't right :)

Which means that our winner, with a lead of nearly 100 points over second place is...

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)!

A big thanks to you all for your patience with the number of errors and the lag in time in the rollout, not to mention your participation in the poll and during the results stage, I can only imagine how much time and deliberation went into all of your lists!

Here's the spreadsheet, give yourselves free rein to juggle the data and make alternative lists as you wish, please say if it doesn't open for whatever reason:
