AMF's Top Video Games of All Time (2021 Edition): LIST THREAD! (CLOSED FOR VOTING!)

Post by mileswide »

I'm thrilled to announce the inaugural poll covering us AMF users' favourite video/computer games of all time! And while I wouldn't be my first choice of host, I'll be honoured to run this thing but I need your input and co-operation on the following:

1) Please include a minimum of 10 games on your ballot. Any lists with fewer than 10 items will not be counted towards the total. There will be no maximum number of games per voter, so every entry on your list will be counted.
2) Lists may be submitted via PM or to my email but it'll encourage more discussion if you post in this thread instead/as well.
3) Selections will be counted as the originally released version of the game (i.e. no mods, fan games etc.)

4a) Games with an identical title, regardless of release date, console or any other factors, will be grouped together as the same game e.g. votes for the XBox 360 and PC releases of Mass Effect 2 in 2010 as well as its PS3 release in 2011 will be combined. The only exception is if there are major differences between your chosen version of a game and the original. The responsibility of providing evidence of such a distinction will lie with you as the voter, not the poll moderator.
4b) By the same token, the poll will be a vote on separate installments, rather than series, so please state the whole title of the game (including its number if applicable) to avoid confusion.
4c) An entry might look similar to this:
1 | Resident Evil 4 | 2005
2. Metal Gear Solid (1998/Game Boy Color)
Or like anything really, as long as it abides by the above clauses, is formatted in a legible way and contains the year of release.

5) Following invaluable advice from perhaps our most prolific pollster Holden (thanks!), I've settled on the formula 100*(25+1)/(25+x)
6) The present deadline is 23:59 GMT on 19th April 2021 but, as with all our polls, if you need an extension, please ask!
7) Any of the above might just be subject to change but will result in a rollout thereafter whatever happens.
8) If you have any questions about rules, eligibility or anything else pertaining to the poll, don't hesitate to contact me via any of the above methods but I'd recommend this thread as the best option since other voters may have similar queries.
9) Let the lists begin!

1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
3. Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
4. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
5. Super Mario World (SNES)
6. Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
7. Yoshi's Island (SNES)
8. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
9. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
10. Mario Kart 64 (N64)
11. Super Mario Kart (SNES)
12. Super Mario 64 (N64)
13. Banjo Kazooie (N64)
14. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)
15. Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES)
16. Paper Mario (N64)

I'm not sure how to rank the Mario Kart games. For a first-time playthrough, I got more enjoyment from the other games, but Mario Kart is great for replay value (I've spent thousands of hours playing Mario Kart, but most of the other games I only played once).

4a) Ports of the same game on different platforms might later be grouped together but will currently be treated as separate, so please include the name of the console for each entry.
Just a suggestion: Combine the ports and original games from the onset. They're essentially the same game anyway and I'd hate to see a game hurt because someone decided to play it on the N64 and someone decided to play the HD version on the Nintendo DS.

Also, what do you plan on doing for a series like Pokemon? Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow are all essentially the same game, but they're under 3 different names with very, very slight differences. Can they be counted as one?

I was even more concerned for games that got released on different platforms from the get go. Like Fallout 4 is a PS4 game for me but it's the exact same game if someone votes for it on Xbox One or PC

I think I'll hold off on submitting a list until the port issue gets figure out because I don't want to take the time to randomly assign a console for pretty much every game in my top 100. Why would it matter that I first played most SNES games on the Wii Virtual Console? And like Nassim said, a ton of games launch on multiple consoles. This is a really confusing step that makes submitting a list harder for no apparent benefit.

I think different ports of the same game should be combined, if there are only minor changes.

If there are major changes, maybe they should be separate, but I can't think of any examples.

To me there are four different issues, all of which are slightly similar:

1. Games that came out at the same time, for different consoles.

2. Games that were ported to a different console some time after the original game's release.

3. Games that are an updated version of an earlier game (e.g. an HD version of a decades old game).

4. Games that were released at the same time, under a slightly different name, but have only superficial differences (e.g. Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue).

IMO all four of these issues have the same solution, count the game as a single entry. But I don't wanna pile on mileswide here, and I'm super grateful that he's hosting this poll. I just hope he sees this and considers these issues.

Hi everyone! Thank you all for your submissions and comments so far, I legitimately didn't expect this much in the way of reaction at this stage, it's great to see :) Sorry, I haven't kept an eye on this for a couple of days but I'll try to check in at least once a day from now just in case.

To Nick, thanks for summarising the issues! It's helped clarify a few things in my mind, hopefully I'll make the right calls on the following:
Nick wrote: Sat Mar 20, 2021 3:36 am 1. Games that came out at the same time, for different consoles.

I'm somewhat in two minds about the 4th issue as, with Pokemon Red + Blue, it's not just a matter of one or two characters unique to their respective title but a whole swathe of characters that were at the time exclusive to one or another, which arguably has a noticeable effect on the mechanics of the respective game.

That said, I agree that the simplest and best solution would be to treat any two examples of the above as single entries unless as mjf314 says:
mjf314 wrote: Fri Mar 19, 2021 11:38 pm If there are major changes, maybe they should be separate
But if you (referring to any voter) include two games with the same title that were released on different consoles, be they at the same time or with years apart, it is up to you to make the case as to why I should count them as separate games.

I'm not versed enough in games to determine whether a difference is substantial or not but I'd say that it would have to concern changes in gameplay or content, not just cosmetic ones like graphics or a couple of extra levels/weapons/moves etc.

As long as no one has any strong opposition to having Nick's four distinctions as part of our guidelines, I will count any two essentially identical games as single entries.

Sorry for the waffling, I hope my position's coherent but I welcome any dissent, comment or questions!

Requiring us to identify a console for everything still feels like an extra step that makes this less accessible, and is it actually going to make the data easier for you to process? Like, there are four games on my list that share exact titles with other major games. You will probably catch the two Doom's since I have them both on my list, but are you going to recognize the two other games that absolutely should not be combined with two unlisted games? I feel like it would be easier on both ends if we only drew attention to the console in case of confusion.

You also mentioned that you haven't owned a console since the Nintendo 64; I understand games were a lot more likely to be exclusive back in that era, but most major releases for the last decade and a half outside of Nintendo have been simultaneously released on PC, PlayStation, and XBOX. It felt like I was randomly drawing a console from a hat for most releases since the mid-2000s. This just feels like a lot of extra work to add information that only makes it more likely for the wrong games to be separated. I feel like simply listing the year would be enough in 99% of cases, the sole exception being the game you used as an example (Metal Gear Solid for the GBC).

I also just kind of assumed 100 was the upper limit but I realize that isn't actually listed in the opening post; I could easily make a top 250.

I don't see any problem with voters doing this. I feel bad that you've gone to the trouble of listing each console for each item now but thanks for submitting. To all other voters, just listing the year after the title will suffice in the vast majority of cases.

Sorry, I'd mentioned this in the earlier discussion thread without adding it to the intro post, there's no maximum, so feel free to add to your list if you like.

I edited my list to add up to my top 250 (without consoles). It should be clearer now that I've expanded my list and the duplicates are there, but there are two games by the below titles that are different games and need to be counted separately:
Doom
God of War
Resident Evil 2

Doom and God of War are reboots and therefore completely distinct from the original games of that title. Resident Evil 2 is a remake, but to such an extent that it could not be considered an equivalent of the original. There are a handful of other games that have had massive remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, but they are still similar enough that I listed only the original version. Like, I'd 100% recommend the remakes of those and the Pokemon games over finding the original, but I don't want to split votes between versions nor do I want to list Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver immediately followed by Gold and Silver. I think in our song polls we treat different recordings of the same song as the same, and I think doing that with traditional remakes here would probably be a good idea.

All of that sounds reasonable grounds to keep these games as separate entities, cheers for clarifying!

Or for another analogy: We treat vinyl records, CDs, and mp3s as the same recording, we treat UK and US versions of the same album (even if they have slightly different tracklists like with the first Clash album) as the same recording, and we treat remastered versions of albums as the same recording as the original versions. I say applying those same principles makes sense.

Right, I've amended the introductory post to reflect our agreement on the above principles, hope it reads as unambiguously as possible!

I wasn't sure if I would submit a list because I stopped playing video games a long time ago. But here's the ones I could scrape together (I am slightly embarrassed by my tiny list):

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
2. Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
4. Final Fantasy X (PS2)
5. Donkey Kong 64 (N64)
6. Super Mario 64 (N64)
7. Spider-Man 2 (PS2)
8. Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
9. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
10. Empire Earth (PC)

Regarding my #10: I never played the campaigns, I just used the map creator (which was much better than in Age of Empires).

Here is my list... I'm sure I have forgotten plenty. The console is the one I first played the game on, but not always the first one it got released on.
In a lot of cases I have grouped together games from the same series that are very similar, but I didn't want them to suffer from vote splitting.
Sometimes I separated them : for instance, Guitar Hero 2 is the best Guitar Hero imo, it added MAJOR new systems to the gameplay, so it gets to rank higher than the other ones. On the other hand, Guitar Hero 1 and 3 are very similar, the 3rd has the benefit of the new mechanics but lost the novelty of the 1st one.
Sometimes I just grouped them, the recent Hitman trilogy is just 3 chapters of the same game for me (especially since you can get all the level from an earlier game within the lattest one), so I bundled them next to each other. Same for the first 3 Professor Layton games, no way I can tell you which is which.

I might amend the list because :
- I'm still only halfway through Persona 5 Strikers
- I might remember games I forgot
- I hope I can play a bit of Nier Automata (though with Persona 5 Strikers ongoing and a 3 month old baby at home, that's unlikely)

I'm going to put crap I forgot about in this post over the ensuing months and years

These are also noteworthy games:
Actraiser / SNES
B.O.B. / SNES
Bubble Bobble / NES
Contra / NES
Contra III: The Alien Wars / SNES
DuckTales / NES
The Final Fantasy Legend / Game Boy
Gargoyle's Quest / Game Boy
Golden Axe / Arcade
Mario Bros. / Arcade, Atari 2600, NES
Metal Gear / NES
Mortal Kombat II / Arcade, SNES
Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos / NES
Pitfall / Atari 2600
Rygar / NES
Solstice / NES
Super C (i.e. Contra II) / NES
Super Star Wars / SNES
Vice: Project Doom / NES
Zombies Ate My Neighbors / SNES

(By the way, in the '90s, there was an ill-advised war started by the Sega Genesis against the Super Nintendo. I finally got myself a Sega Genesis throwback console, in recent years...at this point, no hard feelings, ha ha. Over time, I'll probably add some Genesis games here too.)

I hope I can play a bit of Nier Automata (though with Persona 5 Strikers ongoing and a 3 month old baby at home, that's unlikely)
Personally I would recommend getting in whatever console playing you can before the baby starts becoming mobile. There's more than one reason that I haven't played my Nintendo Switch Pokemon console game for about a year, but my toddler's walking sure hasn't helped.

Noteworthy case with Ninja Gaiden I thought I'd share with you all- it was developed and released simultaneously for the arcade and NES markets by the same company but by different teams who had little in the way of communication with each other, so they ended up being markedly distinct games.

Live in Phoenix has helpfully indicated his preference for the NES version, I ask anyone else wishing to vote for this title to similarly highlight their chosen platform, not the year.

And how has there been 4 identically named Shadowrun games?? Again, please do the same as LiP and specify the platform (or year) should this title make your list. The same goes for the examples considerately raised by BleuPanda, viz. Doom, God of War and Resident Evil 2.

There has been a trend recently of rebooting games with the same title as the original so watch out for Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, SSX (though I don't think either will get much votes) and Hitman (though the original was technically called "Hitman : Codename 47")
My list also has 2 Aladdin games, the one from SNes and the one for Megadrive, those are 2 completely different games.

Thanks Nassim, that's all useful to know, I'm just coming up to collating your choices incidentally. I wasn't aware of the differences between the Aladdin games especially but I'm including the Mega Drive port on my list, so I'll be sure to make that distinction!

I pretty much missed out on the whole last generation of consoles so there’s definitely some classics I never got around to but I got an Xbox One X during the pandemic so I’m slowly making up for that!

Making this list was a lot tougher than I thought, video games are probably the toughest medium to rank for me because there is such a literal barrier to accessing older games plus there’s way more factors to consider then for movies or music...

I looked at replayability, storytelling, the “wow” factor (Oblivion was in the most literal sense unbelievable when I first saw it), nostalgia, and of course just how fun they are to play. Final Fantasy X is the pinnacle of all of those for me.

Thanks for running this Mileswide! This is a very complicated poll vs what we usually do on this forum so if you need help or just clarification for anything in my own list just let me know!

1. Final Fantasy X

Ok, updated. Obviously the gaming never stops, but that should do it for this poll.

I meant Code Name: Viper for #109, not Vice: Project Doom.

This is more a measure of how big a part of my life the game was than a more objective assessment of its quality. I haven't bought a game in a decade, so this list skews heavily to the games I happened to have growing up.

I'm unsure if I made it clear enough but I'm counting Red/Blue/Yellow as one entity, would you be alright with that? If so, would you like anything in Yellow's place?

That’s totally fine! My bad for not reading carefully. That’s ok, you can just delete it.

A few comments about versions of games that I voted for (I haven't actually played these versions, so I'm judging by videos that I watched).

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo DS) - I think it should be combined with the N64 version. It's just different graphics and other minor changes.

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Color) - I think it should be combined with the SNES version. The level design is the same, but the graphics are inferior. There might also be slight differences in physics.

Super Mario 64 (Nintendo DS) - There are 30 additional stars, and some mini-games, but the majority of the game is the same. I would combine it with the N64 version, but I don't feel strongly about it.

Cheers for researching this, mjf314!

Ocarina of Time sounds more or less identical, I'd expect differences in graphics/physics between the 2 guises of DKC solely on account of the characteristics of each respective console and the additions to Mario 64 sounds as if the DS version could be likened to an expansion pack, so I support your views based on your presentation of them.

Anyone with first-hand knowledge of the later ports of all 3 games able to corroborate/refute mjf314's suppositions?

I definitely feel like all those should be treated as the same game. Off the top of my head, the only traditional remake or port that I think is debatable is the Resident Evil 1 remake for Gamecube. Most remakes or ports are essentially equivalents of remastered albums with bonus tracks. There are several 'spiritual remakes' like Resident Evil 2 or Final Fantasy VII Remake, but I don't think anyone would question those being counted separately since they are rebuilt from the ground up with new concepts - they tend to be new games that happen to reuse the old title.

I think the problem here is the term remake, which really has two definitions in gaming:
1. a rerelease of an old game with updated graphics and/or better quality of life features
2. a total rebuilding of the original concept with heavily modified features (Resident Evil 2 completely changes the gameplay while also expanding on the narrative, FF7 Remake changes the gameplay from turn-based to action while heavily changing the story and only covering the first sixth of the original game, etc.)

I don't think anything falling under the first category should be split up; all that does is hurt the original game with no possible benefit. You should be assuming people are voting what they consider the best possible form while simplifying it down to the original release to make it easier to combine (I would always recommend Ocarina of Time 3D over the original due to changes, but they are still the same experience). Meanwhile, anything under the second category is a completely distinct entity.

I think scrutinizing every example is rather extreme. Unless someone explicitly says "I am voting for this version and do not want my vote counted for any other version," it's better to combine them. The real issue here is making sure the spiritual remakes aren't accidentally combined with the original - but I'm also confident the people voting for those spiritual remakes will be aware they are doing so and can help point it out.

Before I post my list, I just have one question, since mileswide thought it was the best overall place to post them.

I have Super Monkey Ball Deluxe included on my list, which is Super Monkey ball 1 and 2 merged as one game, along with extra features. Should it be considered one game, or should it be grouped with the other existing games listed?

My views here will only be tentative seeing as I've not played any of the Super Monkey Ball titles but, going by the précis of them on Metacritic, the fact there's a difficulty setting unique to Deluxe makes me sympathetic to the idea of it being a separate game. Sorta sitting on the fence again but can I get a second opinion?

I suspected the same- I'd imagine remakes without any update in graphics or even addition of levels aren't non-existent but wouldn't make a lot of commercial sense beyond a really retro-minded niche, so trying to separate essentially identikit games with surface-level differences seems picky. If 'spiritual remakes' only share aspects like the same characters with their predecessors, then we're looking at distinct sets of games.

But, to continue in agreeing with all of BleuPanda's post, please do unequivocally point out if you don't want a version of a game grouped with others or if you spot a wrong call made by me or another voter along these lines.

Personally, I think it would be best for the game to count for both Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, since that's what the game essentially is.

In that case, would you mind just ranking 1 & 2 separately and leaving Deluxe out altogether? Even if you didn't play individual editions of 1 & 2 (I'm not sure if you did or not), you played both games in one form or another. I hope that won't pose a problem?
