Films of the '70s: Results

Post by Stephan »

I was finally able to find some spare time this weekend, so we're off. The esteemed voters:
Greg
Romain
Gillingham
Petri
Harold
Antonius
Miguel
Henrik
Jirin
Michel
Moonbeam
Stephan

I've gotten rid of the haters section because it takes a lot of time I don't have, but otherwise the presentation is going to be pretty similar to the previous ones. As always, please let me know if you think I've made a mistake somewhere.

Great start Stephan. Young Frankenstein was last on my list. All the rest so far were also in my bottom quarter or at least bottom half (I didn't check).
Edit. I must add that all the finalists were good (maybe excluding the last one) and many were great or even masterpieces. Great decade indeed.

Definitely agree with you. The field is very, very strong and Young Frankenstein is probably the weakest in the bunch.

It looks to me as the movies so far are quite close scorewise, with a melting pot of well-known films which ended up at the bottom half of most voters' lists, and lesser known films that end up quite well with just one big fan ("The Front Page" for example). But with the exception of one voter*, each voter has most of his top ten films still in the game so it looks to me that the correlation between the ballots is pretty high.

*Moonbeam, who can not be too satisfied with the results, but probably isn't too surprised either...

It seems like without my vote, "Rocky" would be way behind at #100, which is a bit of a shame IMO. For as long as I can remember, I have associated the first Rocky film with Bruce Springsteen's early career (and vice versa too) and this association adds value to both the film and the albums.

Great job, Stephan! Some of the comments aren't mine, though!

I noticed that my Texas Chainsaw Massacre comment was listed after Escape from Alcatraz, and I've never seen Nashville or Interiors!

I don't mind seeing my favorites fall early. I'm a bit of a horror fanatic but I understand that many others aren't.

I'm sorry I haven't commented earlier - I'm busy trying to finish my song list before the deadline!

Legend has it that after showing this film, Tarkovsky then asked the audience what they thought. Most of them seemed confused by it, then a ten year old girl said 'The film is about a man on his deathbed, remembering his life and letting himself off the hook for the mistakes he made'. To which Tarkovsky replied, 'I have nothing to add to that'. That sums up Tarkovsky: His films are deceptively simple to read, just don't decide how to read them before you see them. (Jirin)

"Stories are not so important." (Gillingham)

Well, for me it just doesn't work that way and I put The Mirror at the very end of my list. You will see that I'm a fan of Stalker though.

If you think The Mirror has no story you're not watching it right. ;)

It does bother me when people who are used to only narrative films watch non-narrative films and complain there's no story and therefore the movie is worthless. That strikes me as Rex Reed style trashing.

Just because a movie does not speak it's story out through you through a linear structured narrative does not mean the story does not exist, the characters are not emotionally compelling or that the ideas the story conveys are not poignant. Free your mind!

I also think the word 'Pretentious' falls under the category of dime-store criticism. It's like saying "I don't know how to criticize the film so instead I'll attack the motives of the filmmaker."

Guess this was directed at me, at least for a bit. Even if both films (Zerkalo and A Woman under the Influence) were well in my top half :)

First, I would like you to know that I think that very many films are too much focused on story-telling and 'pretentiousness' (I don't like that word in criticism either, to be honest) isn't a bad thing at all in my book, to the contrary. Maybe that changes your intepretation of my comments a little bit.

To me, images are more important that stories in films. After watching quite some films in a relatively short time a couple of years ago, I found that it's the images that keep me interested, not the stories per se.

Anyway, although there haven't been a lot of surprises yet, I like the unfolding of this list. I will keep a closer track from now on.

Most of the covers of the top 10 films are rather beautiful, so they'll be a little more prominent, and I've also added a critic quote again to liven things up a little.

10. The Deer Hunter

Image

Director: Michael Cimino
Points: 1009
Year rank: #1 of 1978
Voters: 11
Fans: Stephan (#3), antonius (#8), Petri (#9), Michel (#11), Greg (#14), Henrik (#16), Gillingham (#17)
Comment(s): Deer Hunter spoils itself by focusing too much on russian roulette as a gimmick. (Jirin)

Critic: This excruciatingly violent, three-hour Viet Nam saga demolishes the moral and ideological cliches of an era: it shoves the audience into hell and leaves it stranded without a map. (Time Magazine)

9. Сталкер [Stalker]

Image

Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Points: 1010
Year rank: #3 of 1979
Voters: 11
Fans: Greg (#2), Gillingham (#2), Jirin (#3), Henrik (#10), Stephan (#10), Michel (#17)
Comment(s): Possibly has the best cinematography of any film. (Gillingham)
The great thing about Stalker is that where most science fiction would go out of its way to explain everything ahead of time, Stalker puts us in the same perspective as Writer and Professor: It's all a mystery to us and we have only the stalker's word to understand anything. (Jirin)

Critic: There is no easy watching to be gained here, but nor is this a hard slog -- each scene is beautifully crafted, painting a vivid and fascinating picture of Tarkovsky's vision. (Amber Wilkinson)

8. Chinatown

Director: Roman Polanski
Points: 1010
Year rank: #1 of 1974
Voters: 11
Fans: Harold (#6), Stephan (#7), Jirin (#8), antonius (#9), Michel (#10), Greg (#18)
Comment(s): A 70's take on 30's noir with a bummer ending Polanski had to fight the writer to get, an ending that replaces the mythology of the genre with Polanski's cynical take on the reality of the era, and vaults the film into all time greatness. (Jirin)

Critic: A landmark blend of acting, directing, structure and design. Chinatown is the greatest detective movie ever made. (Chris Laverty)

7. Alien

Director: Ridley Scott
Points: 1013

I prefer the sequel, but this is wonderfully tense and original. My #35 ever. (Moonbeam)

Critic: An old-fashioned scary movie set in a highly realistic sci-fi future, made all the more believable by expert technical craftmanship. (Variety)

Hooray for Alien! What a great film and well worthy of a top 10 placement here. As my comment indicates, though, it's all about Aliens for me.

Glad to see Eraserhead, Days of Heaven and Aguirre in top 20. Great presentation Stephan! It's also great to read comments. So thanks for Moonbeam, Gillingham and Jirin. Looking forward to see the order of top 6.

Comment(s): Just like in the '80s, Kubrick strands at #6. (Stephan)
I feel that I need to watch this again. I loved it, but I'm not as big of a fan as many others. My #148 ever. (Moonbeam)

Critic: A merciless, demoniac satire in the future imperfect. (Time Magazine)

5. Taxi Driver

Comment(s):

Critic: Martin Scorsese's history-making scald is truly a phenomenon from another day and age. Which is to say, imagine a like-minded film of this decade killing at the box office and getting nommed for Best Picture. (Michael Atkinson)

Stalker in 9 is, by far, the most surprised thing in this poll. :o
It's not the type of movies this forum usually appreciates.

Good to see that.

The rest of the ranking is perfectly predictable with the initial list.

4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Image

Director: Miloš Forman
Points: 1096
Year rank: #1 of 1975
Voters: 12
Fans: Henrik (#2), Romain (#4), Petri (#4), Stephan (#4), antonius (#6), Michel (#6), Moonbeam (#7), Harold (#22)
Comment(s): The creeping terror that builds ever so slowly make this a real winner. My #40 ever. (Moonbeam)
Yes, that means the top 3 is entirely Coppola's. (Stephan)

Critic: The genius of the film is that you never feel you're being preached at, but rather being allowed a fly-on-the-wall view of a systematic crushing of humanity. (Cole Smithey)

3. The Godfather, Part II

Image

Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Points: 1104
Year rank: #2 of 1974
Voters: 12
Fans: Stephan (#2), Harold (#2), Romain (#3), Gillingham (#3), Michel (#4), Petri (#8), Petri (#8), Miguel (#15)
Comment(s): The duality and similarity of senior and junior Corleone is perfectly realised. It took a De Niro and a Pacino to make it work that well. (Gillingham)
This film and its predecessor made me feel that I don't like gangster movies much. (Moonbeam)

Critic: This film has an even broader scope than the original, but does not fail in its depiction of small, intimate moments and surprising emotional reveals. (Jeffrey M. Anderson)

2. The Godfather

Image

Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Points: 1131
Year rank: #1 of 1972
Voters: 12
Fans: Harold (#1), Stephan (#1), Romain (#2), Michel (#5), Gillingham (#7), antonius (#10), Henrik (#17), Miguel (#21), Moonbeam (#22), Petri (#23), Jirin (#25)
Comment(s): As great a film Godfather is, I don't understand the superlative status it has as one of the greatest films of all time. The acting is fantastic, but the story is just a gangster melodrama. (Jirin)
I've never really cared for this. (Moonbeam)

Critic: There are volumes that could be written--and have been--about the movie's uniformly powerful performances; its precedent-setting editing by William Reynolds and Peter Zinner; Nino Rota's haunting score; and Dean Tavoularis's evocative set design. (Desson Thomson)

1. Apocalypse Now

Image

Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Points: 1243
Year rank: #1 of 1979
Voters: 12
Fans: Gillingham (#1), Michel (#1), Petri (#2), antonius (#4), Greg (#5), Stephan (#5), Harold (#7), Jirin (#9), Moonbeam (#10), Romain (#11), Miguel (#19)
Comment(s): The madness, the beauty, the surrealism, the darkness, the addictiveness, the horror of war. The horror... (Gillingham)
The buildup is just sublime and it's difficult not to get sucked in. My #59 ever. (Moonbeam)
It was never really close, as you can see by the points difference as well. Apocalypse Now took an early lead and never gave it away. (Stephan)

Critic: Apocalypse Now did help provide me, and many of my generation, with a vision of what film art could achieve, a vision so magnificent it doomed us to spend much of our subsequent moviegoing lives in a funk. (Eric Harrison)

And that's that. It's been a pleasure to present these results. It seems like we're actually getting closer together in terms of our favorite films as we move further back in time, which is interesting to see. I hope you will all be there for the '60s as well.

Thanks Stephan! Great presentation!

You got some comments at the end. The result was perhaps a little too predictable to be heavily discussed.
