I wanted to submit, but never could find the right list. Eventually, I just decided I couldn't decide. I got too busy to submit a great performances list though.

If it sweetens the pot a bit, De Niro in "Raging Bull" would most likely have been my #1.

Wait, Rue McClanahan almost made the top 100? As a Golden Girls fanatic, I am seriously freaking out right now. Who voted for her? (I'm too lazy to look it up.) She was amazing in Maude, too.

Even though, it doesn't seem Estelle Getty even received a vote, because I think that out of all the Golden Girls, she deserved her Emmy the most. "Old Friends" is one of the most heart-wrenching episodes from the series, and of course, Getty won her Emmy based on that episode.

Superpan, I am seriously hoping you'll watch The Golden Girls now. Every weeknight and morning on Hallmark Channel, plays quite a bit on TV Land (during the weekends, I think), and also plays quite a bit on LogoTV. It would seriously make up for saying Ivanhoe was the best Elizabeth Taylor movie (a big no-no on several fronts).

Coming up with a list, in hindsight, was pretty time consuming. A great performances list should be an interesting poll.
Rue and Estelle got a solitary vote from JR, the champion of TV stars, his top 11 are:
1. Lucille Ball
2. Bea Arthur
3. Betty White
4. Vicki Lawrence
5. Rue McLanahan
6. Jackie Gleason
7. Tony Randall
8. Jack Klugman
9. Katherine Helmond
10. Robert Guillaume
11. Estelle Getty

Thanks so much, Dexter!

Wow, Myrna Loy almost made it! She's great in the Thin Man series.

Wow, awesome to finally have the list altogether! Will have my reflections on the top 20 after the Fourth of July is over. Haven't read everyone's ballot yet, but surprised to see Paulette Goddard ranked so high in the overall poll as I would have guessed I'd be the only who voted for her.

Apologies for the weeks-long double-post, but here's my final analysis!

Robin Williams - The sad clown. As over-exposed as he was in his day, his tragic end forever paints his work in sadness. So let it be said that he was always good at being vulnerable and improvising on the fly, whether he was the Genie, Peter Pan, or Dwight Eisenhower. The only man who could be an alien and about 2-3 US Presidents. He's dearly missed. Number Of Films I've Seen: 13 (Theatrical) Favorite Film: Aladdin

Samuel L. Jackson - The (currently living) movie star who's appeared in the most movies he's seen, perhaps he doesn't get enough credit for the iconic stature he enjoys today like few others. Just dropping him into a film instantly lends it not just gravitas but also gives it some bad-ass credentials. Part of this may be due to his two most famous roles, Mace Windu and Nick Fury, being uncharacteristically quieter supporting turns for him. But see him in a Tarantino film or Kingsman: The Secret Service and watch the fireworks go off! Number Of Films I've Seen: 21 Favorite Film: Captain America: The First Avenger and Iron Man are both in my top 50, but then Goodfellas is in my top 150 which then leaves Do The Right Thing as my favorite film where he has a substantial role. Yes, Pulp Fiction is fifth.

Julianne Moore - Perhaps the prestige actress with the most appeal right now. I've used the word range a lot, but she always makes brave choices that pay off handsomely. From walking around bottomless in Short Cuts to braving a Boston accent in 30 Rock, her skill at doing the impossible and getting to the heart of the character remains a high mark to her professionalism and her craft. Number Of Films I've Seen: 8 Favorite Film: The Big Lebowski

Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Another 2014 tragedy. Hoffman essayed some of the most poetically damaged men on screen. The introvert's pain could be found in him as he quietly bore what seemed to be worlds of depression inside his unremarkable frame. That said, he could be quite charming as he demonstrated in The Hunger Games films. Number Of Films I've Seen: 7 Favorite Film: The Big Lebowski

Meryl Streep - A fine actress who is very good at her roles. However, I think this Onion article sums up my feelings on her: http://www.theonion.com/blogpost/name-o ... d-in-11490 Number Of Films I've Seen: 7 Favorite Film: The Deer Hunter

Katharine Hepburn - The first lady of big screen acting, even if she didn't place in my top 50. People say she didn't have much range or that she comes across as mean, but for me she always screamed intelligence and bluntness. She radiated elegance yet could get down and dirty if a part such as Bringing Up Baby demanded it. That's part of why her and Cary Grant are my second favorite movie couple and why she managed to appear in adaptations of two of J. M. Barrie's plays. Number Of Films I've Seen: 8 Favorite Film: Bringing Up Baby or The Philadelphia Story as she's caught up in the Cary Grant five-way tie explained below.

Daniel Day-Lewis - If he's really retiring, it may mean that Phantom Thread is the last we see of the man who has perhaps defined the craft and old-school extreme Method acting for the last twenty years. Day-Lewis disappears in his parts yet always manages to deliver a gut-wrenching performance. He's an enigma as a person but his roles feel like they've been lived in. If nothing else, watching him in Lincoln was like seeing the President come back to life. Number Of Films I've Seen: 2 Favorite Film: Lincoln

Ingrid Bergman - The highest ranked woman on this list and while she didn't place on my ballot, I can't say I begrudge her. She had no problem being beautiful, but she also had no problem playing complex, intelligent characters with rich inner lives. If Casablanca was nothing else but a series of close-ups of her face, tears glistening in her eyes...it'd still be a masterpiece. Number Of Films I've Seen: 4 Favorite Film: Casablanca

Jack Lemmon - One of my top five favorite actors! Yes, he was the everyman but he's also the lovable goofball as well. You couldn't help but fall in love with him and root for him, even when he was in desperate situations such as in Glengarry Glen Ross. No man was ever daffier than he was in Some Like It Hot nor more mundanely tragic in The Apartment. If I do keep acting, he's a gold standard for me. Number Of Films I've Seen: 12 Favorite Film: Some Like It Hot

Paul Newman - Cool. Like legit cool. Calm and collected with piercing blue eyes. While I'm not the biggest fan of his, he definitely leaves an impression. To the point that they're still bringing him back for Cars films, making him one of the three actors on the list who has been brought back to life in the 21st Century to play a role long after he died. Number Of Films I've Seen: 5 Favorite Film: Road to Perdition

Tom Hanks - If Denzel Washington is the heir to Jimmy Stewart's dark side, "National Teddy Bear" Tom Hanks is the most visible heir to his everyman persona. I wonder if there's a more likable actor working today. That's why we trust him to tell us our history! While Hanks perhaps isn't the flashiest actor who ever lived, no other man could play Woody like he does. An American treasure. Number Of Films I've Seen: 16 Favorite Film: Toy Story 3

Cary Grant - Jimmy Stewart may be who we are, but Cary Grant is who we want to be. The superego of the movies, the creation of "Cary Grant" was the graceful construct of one Archie Leach. Fighting past his own insecurities, Leach became the graceful, clever Grant. A comedian superstar, he could go big or small, suave or clumsy, likable or scary. His screen persona contained multitudes- polished to an inch of his life, you can't look away when he's on screen. He's the only actor I love so much, he doesn't have a film on my top 100 at the moment because I can't decide. Cary Grant is everything we love about the movies. Number Of Films I've Seen: 29 Favorite Film: The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer or Bringing Up Baby or Monkey Business or The Philadelphia Story or His Girl Friday, I can't decide! It used to be The Philadelphia Story but a variety of factors about that movie have knocked it down a peg with no clear winner emerging.

Humphrey Bogart - The King of cool. He reeks of noir before noir was even a thing. Cagney may be the classic crime figure, tightly wound, but Bogart is the laid-back cynical counterpart that has become an idol to many audience members. He's world-weary and always ready with the wisecrack, but he's love and lost. Sometimes that loss can even be his mental state as seen in The Treasure of Sierra Madre. A giant of film masculinity. Number Of Films I've Seen: 9-10 Favorite Film: Casablanca

Charlie Chaplin - I won't go into why he made the rough draft of my ballot before I cut him for essentially playing one role for most of his career. I also won't go into how I was terrified of him as a child because I felt like he wouldn't stop staring at me. Instead I'll just say that he's still one of cinema's greatest auteurs, his Victorian sentimentality feeling old-fashioned but not dated with truly affecting performances. Plus I still think he's the funniest comedian of cinema's early period. Number Of Films I've Seen: 8 (and 3 shorts) Favorite Film: Modern Times

Dustin Hoffman - Hoffman's a famously picky actor, but he's another great example of someone who so embodies his roles. Not only do you get a great sense of himself in every performance, but he does this despite striving to be a chameleon. Looking at his filmography, you'd be surprised to learn he's appeared in Dick Tracy and A Series of Unfortunate Events. A true legend. Number Of Films I've Seen: 10 Favorite Film: The Graduate

Al Pacino - Much like Francis Ford Coppola, Pacino made his mark in the 1970s and has never quite reached those heights again. But any man who can contain in him both Michael Corleone and Tony Montana is still an acting legend by any definition. Hoo-Ha! Number Of Films I've Seen: 5 Favorite Film: The Godfather

James Stewart - My favorite actor of all time. Stewart is America in all its complications: optimistic for its future but haunted for it's past. An icon of aw-shucks old-fashioned niceness, his darkness would often define him both early in his career when he was typecast as a murderer and later in his career when he explored the angry impotence of man in films by Alfred Hitchcock and Anthony Mann. Of course, Frank Capra had already seized upon these qualities in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington and It's A Wonderful Life, which are not just two of their best films but also two of the best films ever made. Whether in Washington or the Wild West, Stewart's presence is guaranteed to be wonderful to watch. Number Of Films I've Seen: 36 Favorite Film: It's A Wonderful Life

Marlon Brando - A game-changer. Watch Brando in his later performances and you might think he never left a bit of scenery unchewed. But just watch him in On The Waterfront and see how he plays with Eva Marie Saint's glove early on in it. There's few more honest pieces of acting in the cinema than in that scene. This was an honesty Brando brought to all of his films, even ones like Superman or Julius Caesar where you wouldn't expect to find him. Number Of Films I've Seen: 9 (counting both Superman Returns and the director's cut of Superman II) Favorite Film: On The Waterfront

Robert De Niro - Maybe his film selection hasn't been the best lately. But all it does is cloud the electric performer he was back in the 1970s. Taxi Driver scales its disturbing heights all thanks to his terrifying performance. His ability to inhabit frustrated rage believably is unparalleled, yet he can still play more mundane monsters in films such as Goodfellas. Still an undeniable talent. Number Of Films I've Seen: 11 Favorite Film: Goodfellas, though Taxi Driver won't get out of my head

Jack Nicholson - In retrospect, I'm surprised at how surprised I was that he was the top choice. Few men could hold the screen like him. To say the word "Jack" is to conjure up his sneering presence. Whether that sneer is good or evil depends on where he's at, both mentally and physically. A restrained loose cannon, Nicholson may lack a true masterpiece in my eyes but will always be an icon. Number Of Films I've Seen: 9 Favorite Film: The Little Shop of Horrors

As this post is long enough, I won't over-analyze the list or the ranking. All I'll say is great job Dexter and excited for any future competitions coming up!

Thank you prosecutorgodot, bonnielaurel, and Superpan for the gratitude shown though this would not be possible without your votes. Thank you Superpan in return for your individual insights of those who made it to the list; your last commentary I mostly agree though I find Samuel L. Jackson's talent wasted playing the same one-note character (but what a note) and as it goes with the music industry, depression has robbed us of great talents. Also, it is a revelation that the top 3 actors are method actors not mention the presence of Pacino, Hoffman, and Day-Lewis. I guess great method acting transcends traditional acting and when played right is not self-indulgent and superfluous.
