R.I.P. Jonathan Demme

Post by Harold »

Jonathan Demme, who won an Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs and directed a wide variety of other films, has passed away from esophageal cancer at 73:

Very sad news. Demme's other films include the brilliant Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, Married to the Mob, Philadelphia, and my personal favorite: 1986's underrated Something Wild, which takes the 1980s trope of "uptight yuppie goes for wild ride with sexy free spirit" and turns it inside out and back again, thanks to Demme's surehanded control of the tonal shifts in E. Max Frye's screenplay and outstanding performances by Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith, and an unforgettably menacing Ray Liotta in his first film role. Please seek it out if you haven't seen it (the film received the Criterion treatment a few years ago).
