AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
Greetings AM forumers! This is the first-ever AMF's Greatest Actors/Actresses of All Time poll, celebrating our picks for the greatest thespians who graced the movie screen.
A couple of things to bear in mind:
1. Pick the TV/film actors/actresses of any nationality whose acting (dramatic, comic, etc.) talent you consider to be the best/greatest based on their body of work;
2. Do not post your list in this thread, PM to me or email me at max_webber69(at)yahoo(dot)com in any common format (simple text, word, excel, etc.);
3. If you have anything to say about a particular actor/actress you can also include it in your list.
4. To be eligible, a list must contain a ranking of not less than 20 actors/actresses.
5. I will assign points only to your top 100 actors/actresses.
6. The formula that will be used is: points = 100 * tan (11/90) / (tan ( (10+rank)/90) ), the same one used by JimmyJazz in the 2016 AMF Artists poll.
7. I will post an update every week on the number of submissions and also PM frequent contributors of the AMF film polls to remind them to submit their lists.
8. The deadline for your top 100 actors/actresses list is at midnight of May 16, subject to an extension if requested.
9. You can change your list anytime before the deadline.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
edit: DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 16!

Thanks for taking the initiative, Dexter. I will certainly submit a list. I will probably have about 50% Americans, 20% British and 30% other.
Re: AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
This is an interesting exercise: I'm realizing there are a lot of actors I've really loved but have only seen a couple movies with. It will also be hard to wrestle with actors who I like due to their persona compared to ones who carry raw acting technique. In the end, I'll have to rank them in how their performances add to their films.

Guys, I'm posting a list in this board on 501 Movie Stars to help you with your choices (Of course, you are free to choose those not found in the list).BleuPanda wrote:This is an interesting exercise: I'm realizing there are a lot of actors I've really loved but have only seen a couple movies with. Also, I think we should follow the format in the book when it comes to those who acted with another like Abott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy but separate entries for those whose filmography can be differentiated from another like Astaire and Rogers.

Yep. It probably will and with good reason. I'm just hoping some older favorites make it their way in instead of more newer favorites. I honestly don't know how I could deal with life if Bradley Cooper made it in but not Gary Cooper.Dexter wrote:I expect the poll result will lean heavily towards Hollywood stars.bonnielaurel wrote:Thanks for taking the initiative, Dexter. I want to bring up an unorthodox choice that I hope a few people will consider:
Mel Blanc; though his works are limited to the voices in animated shorts, his roles should be immediately familiar to everyone. He was the voice for every male WB cartoon character beside Elmer Fudd; he is the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, etc. His vocal range is astounding; he's an actor everyone should be familiar with, though few give the credit he deserves. He has over 1000 credits on IMDB, as he played these characters for several decades. Though most of us are only considering live action actors (and for obvious reasons), Mel Blanc is a voice actor fully deserving of a spot.

This doesn't seem like my thing.
There are a lot of actors I respect and a lot of them I like in a lot of things, but very few who were consistently good in all the films I saw from them.
I could probably rank the greatest performances, but not the greatest actors overall. Would that be okay?

He would be on my list mostly for Bugs Bunny or Marvin the Martian. As would Frank Welker for being the G1 Megatron. He's mostly known as a sound effects guy but is worth just as much commendation. And he's still alive even!StevieFan13 wrote:Seconded! But this raises a question to poll eligibility? Are we limited to feature film actors? Or can we include those known mostly for TV roles? Video Game VAs even (Nolan North as Deadpool would certainly be a factor for great single performances)?
Since acting is so broad and nebulous, this makes me grapple even harder with this poll and my list.

Re: AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
There are a bunch of actors more famous for stage roles or TV roles that are either on my list or I considered putting on my list (Audra McDonald was my #2, and I almost put Neil Patrick Harris on). And voice actor-wise, I'd also make cases for Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille, Joe Alaskey (though his best voices were Mel Blanc imitations), pretty much anyone on The Simpsons, and Grey DeLisle.whuntva wrote:He would be on my list mostly for Bugs Bunny or Marvin the Martian. That's okay, as long as an actor does not appear twice in your list. In my roll-out of the result, I'll be listing the key movies of every ranked actor so if an actor in your list has 2 (or more) TV/film roles that count among the greatest performances for you please indicate them.whuntva wrote:I could probably rank the greatest performances, but not the greatest actors overall. My apologies, I did not expect this to be an issue as I was only thinking about movie and TV actors.whuntva wrote:Are we limited to feature film actors? Acting is indeed broad as it includes different mediums such as theater, film, television and even radio and different performances such as kabuki, mime, voice acting, CGI acting and technically even acting that is considered pornographic.
So, let's agree to limit the poll to TV and film actors (including voice actors and the Andy Serkis types)?

So, a film/TV actor who's also done B'way still counts? I don't really want to take Audra McDonald off my list.

Um, they're still film/TV actors. Laurence Olivier did a lot of West End, but he's still ranked as one of the greatest movie stars. If you want to vote for Audra McDonald - on the strength of her work and the greatness of her body of work (I think that's Dexter's rule) - do so.StevieFan13 wrote:So, a film/TV actor who's also done B'way still counts? Re: AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
Whelp, just submitted my list; I'm kind of disappointed by my gender ratio, but I don't want to force a change...I just need to work on watching more movies with female protagonists.
There's a really odd mix here. At the top are many actors who have managed strong careers playing a variety of roles, but as I got further down my list, reasons began to diverge. Some actors do a really good job playing one archetype (such as many comedians), some give one or two really phenomenal performances and are otherwise unwatched by me, others essentially got in for playing a single character really well in long-running franchises (at least two actors got in for their roles in the same movie series; they have other works, but it's definitely their recurring performances there that got them in). The funny thing about that last group is many of those are in movies I don't find notable for their performances; there's a certain quality to essentially defining a famous character in your image, and superhero movies especially have created this odd pairing of character and actor, even when the overall level of acting isn't strong.
The ultimate problem is I'm not much of a person for acting, so unless someone really stands out, there's a high chance I'll overlook them; someone can be really good in a bunch of movies I've seen and I might not realize their the same person unless I bother to look them up. I don't think I'm that good at recognizing people until I make a note to learn who they are...
After doing this, I'd be curious to see what we would come up with in a best character list. I think that could be just as interesting, as it's less reliant on seeing a large bodies of someone's work.

Update:
Sorry, I had an unexpected trip abroad and was not able to send private messages to the people here in the forum. I'll do it today.
There's only 12 days left to vote. So far I've received only three lists (from StevieFan13, bonnielaurel and BleuPanda). I'll extend the deadline if requested.

Re: AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
StevieFan13, I'm restricting my poll to an actor's work on film and/or TV because they are the mediums with the widest reach. I live in a place with no Broadway and recorded versions thereof are a rare find and I think some potential voters are similarly situated. Audra McDonald certainly worked on both mediums but is more renowned for her Broadway work (per wiki), so if you think she still deserves a place and a high rank on your list without accounting her Broadway work then go ahead put her there.StevieFan13 wrote:So, a film/TV actor who's also done B'way still counts? Hi everybody! One of my film school friends who posts here turned me onto this thread and asked if I wanted to vote in it. Hope nobody minds! Excited to see the results since my last attempt at a greatest all-time actors result ended inconclusively.
I think I got a list together, but it's really tough trying to parse out a livable top 100. Mel Blanc's a perfect example of an all-around talent that's easy to overlook. It took five rounds and additional editing but I'll save any other thoughts until after the final results are posted.

Thank you for turning Superpan onto this thread, acroamor! I really appreciate it. I personally like his/her selection and of course, yours too. So an update, so far there is a total of 6 submissions: StevieFan13, bonnielaurel, BleuPanda, Superpan, acroamor and me, and 2 who will definitely submit a list: Petri and notbrianeno. That makes it 8. It's still a long ways to go 'til the June 16 deadline so I'm confident that this poll could get at least twice the current submissions. Can't wait to see the results!
Re: AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
I'm halfway done with my list. I just need to add 50 more and finish writing up about them. (There's a few people I will definitely need to explain my reasoning for ranking them so high [i.e. Elizabeth Taylor] and so low [i.e. Meryl Streep].)Dexter wrote:Thank you for turning Superpan onto this thread, acroamor! I mean, I'd like to participate but my list would be really skewed towards modern Hollywood actors, with some Polish inclusions I guess, so it wouldn't be too worthwile. I'd much rather do a performances poll. It's not like I don't appreciate acting in the old era, I watched Suspicion by Hitchcook not long ago and was taken in by every Joan Fontaine reaction, it's just that, I've seen two films with her and how can I rank her appropriately versus De Niro for example.
Re: AMF All Time Actors/Actresses Poll (2017): Voting Thread
Lists skewed towards modern Hollywood actors is expected (given that this is an English site and the average AMFer, I assume, is below middle age and a casual movie viewer), and in fact have received one or two, but if there's hesitation on your part then I understand. I'm okay with conducting a performances poll next depending on how this poll turns out but I'll be on vacation in August and September.Depeche Mode wrote:I mean, I'd like to participate but my list would be really skewed towards modern Hollywood actors, with some Polish inclusions I guess, so it wouldn't be too worthwile. For an update, we have 7 lists in the poll with the addition of bootsy's. Around 2 more weeks to go till the deadline. Hopefully, more lists will be sent. So far there are no clear cut frontrunners.

Hi guys! There's one more week to go before the deadline of the Actors poll. I'd greatly appreciate it if you can submit a list, a minimum list of 30 film/TV actors/actresses will do. So far I have lists and 4 lists I'll be expecting (with the addition of JR).

Thank you Midaso! Very much appreciate it.Midaso wrote:Am putting a quick list together,it won't be any flashy and will be embarrassingly skewed towards modern stars, but it's better than nothing...
Michel, prosecutorgodot and babydoll submitted a list, bringing the total to 13 voters so I think it's a nice turnout.
Less than 24 hours to go. The roll-out will follow probably within a day after the deadline.

I hope you still plan to submit one. Anyway, I have lots to do today so I can't work on the results until midnight GMT so I'll still accept lists submitted today (U.S. time).Midaso wrote:Am putting a quick list together,it won't be any flashy and will be embarrassingly skewed towards modern stars, but it's better than nothing...
Right now I have 14 lists with JR submitting the last one, a game changer with a TV stars-heavy list.
edit: Got Midaso's list
