Films of the 1990s: 1991 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 15th of September. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 1990 there's is still two weeks left to do it.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1991:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

A better year than 1990. I feel good down to #18. Several effective coming of age stories (My Girl, Dogfight, Man in the Moon). Three of the best action films of the decade (T2, Point Break, Last Boy Scout). And the second Naked Gun, which delivered nearly as many laughs as the first film.

1. The Silence of the Lambs
2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
3. Boyz n the Hood
4. Point Break
5. The Naked Gun 2.5: The Smell of Fear
6. The Last Boy Scout
7. JFK
8. New Jack City
9. Beauty and the Beast
10. My Girl

11. The Addams Family
12. City Slickers
13. The Prince of Tides
14. Dead Again
15. Cape Fear
16. Fried Green Tomatoes
17. Dogfight
18. The Man in the Moon
19. Grand Canyon
20. What About Bob?

Terminator 2 almost won. The Silence of the Lambs overrided it at the end when Michel gave 50 points to Lambs and none for Arnold. Raise the Red Lantern got the most #1 votes. Last times #5 Delicatessen just missed the final (and my personal top 20) and #3 of last time (Thelma and Louise) was #13. There's a quite big gap in points between #12 and #15.
Boyz n the Hood and Hearts of Darkness got much more points than last time (A Brighter Summer Day did much better too but that's because finally people have had chance to see it (not me yet).
Some surprises that missed the top 50: Fisher King (Terry Gilliam) and Europa (Lars von Trier) (both at #56)

Oh, it looks like I forgot to vote for 35 up. That's too bad, considering that it might have won had I voted. Well, will have to remember to vote for 42 up in 1998, now.

I truly adore that one - awesome cartoon (some reminiscences of Ozu (and Proust)) - My favourite Ghibli' by a hundred miles.
That would be my 50 points for 1991 - shame I discovered this forum a month later.
