Films of the '70s: 1974

Postby Stephan » Mon Apr 09, 2012 7:58 am

You can post a list of anywhere between 5 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. The deadline is April 29th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1974, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Haven't seen too much from this year besides the big four (Godfather, Chinatown, Conversation, Ali) and two Mel Brooks comedies that confirmed my dislike for Mel Brooks comedies (although Blazing Saddles was alright). I'm going to watch A Woman Under The Influence for sure, and perhaps The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but is there anything else I really should watch? It seems like a weak year.

Edit: Apparently Monty Python and the Holy Grail was released in 1974, or at least RYM lists it as such, so don't forget to vote for that one this year!

For the Monty Python, the question is important.

Here is my list for 1974 (the weakest year of the seventies for me). The films are very good...but they are few.
1. The Godfather, part II (Francis Ford Coppola)
2. Chinatown (Roman Polanski)
3. Vincent, François, Paul... et les autres (Claude Sautet)
4. Les Valseuses (Bertrand Blier)
5. C'eravamo tanto amati (Ettore Scola)
6. The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola)
7. L'Horloger de Saint-Paul (Bertrand avernier)
8. Lacombe lucien (louis Malle)

or

1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (God)
2. The Godfather, part II (Francis Ford Coppola)
3. Chinatown (Roman Polanski)
4. Vincent, François, Paul... et les autres (Claude Sautet)
5. Les Valseuses (Bertrand Blier)
6. C'eravamo tanto amati (Ettore Scola)
7. The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola)
8. L'Horloger de Saint-Paul (Bertrand avernier)
9. Lacombe lucien (louis Malle)

1. The Godfather, Part II
2. Chinatown
3. The Conversation
4. Young Frankenstein
5. A Woman Under the Influence
6. The Parallax View
7. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
8. Celine and Julie Go Boating
9. Blazing Saddles
10. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

If Holy Grail is determined to be a 1975 film:

7. Celine and Julie Go Boating
8. Blazing Saddles
9. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
10. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

"Gesundheit!"
-- In context, one of the greatest closing lines in movie history, from The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

I looked around the web, and it seems like Monty Python and the Holy Grail had its premiere on either April 03, 1974 or March 14, 1975, but I couldn't find any kind of comments that justify any of these dates. So different information for such a wellknown movie is really weird... How hard can it be, aren't the Python members themselves interested in documenting the history?

Yeah, it's weird. IMDb and TSPDT say 1975, but Allrovi, MovieDB, and RYM have 1974, with MovieDB saying Spain and the UK had the April 3rd release. RottenTomatoes says the premiere was January 1st 1975 but lists it as 1974, and the Monty Python page on wikipedia also has 1974, while the movie page itself says 1975.

Does anyone have any definitive evidence for either date? We're going to use 1974 for the competition, but it would be good to have it solved regardless.

English Wikipedia says 1974 on Monthy Python page and 1975 on movie page
German Wikipedia syas 1975 on Monthy Python page and 1974 on movie page

It all makes sense: It's as absurd as the movie itself.

According to one RYM contributor "there's an excerpt from Michael Palin's diary from early January talking about the first draft being screened and half the troupe hating it, followed by discussion about how it was re-cut a dozen or so times on its way to being funny".

That seems pretty conclusive. I'm unsure what to do here; I could simply remove all the votes for Monty Python from this year and ask everyone to vote for it again in a couple of weeks, or we could move ahead with the 1974 date for this competition. Let me know what you guys think is better.

It has always been a 1975 film in my book, but that doesn't really matter now.

I don't really care, but I do agree we have to choose one or the other year.

In this text about the film (I don't know if this is their official website) says:
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail was shown in theaters on 3 April 1975 in the UK, on 10 May 1975 in the US and on 14 August 1975 in Australia"

I think we'll stick to 1974 for the sake of this competition since everybody has already voted for it, and it seems a fairly weak year compared to 1975 anyway.

Michel, great call on The Man Who Sleeps, very impressive film!

This first time this decade we have four films with more than 300 points, and Chinatown becomes the second film (after A Clockwork Orange to get votes from all participants. It got first place only twice, but it did secure 11 top 3 placements.

#. Title (Director) - Points/Votes/#1s
1. Chinatown (Roman Polanski) - 473/13/2
2. The Godfather, Part II (Francis Ford Coppola) - 395/11/3
3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam / Terry Jones) - 323/11/3
4. The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola) - 302/11/1
5. Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle [The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser] (Werner Herzog) - 189/7/1
6. A Woman Under the Influence (John Cassavetes) - 178/7/0
7. Angst Essen Seele Auf [Ali: Fear Eats The Soul] (Rainer Werner Fassbinder) - 140/7/0
8. The Front Page (Billy Wilder) - 100/4/1
9. Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks) - 99/6/0
10. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Tobe Hooper) - 91/5/0

Herzog gets his second film through, while Coppola joins the leaders with three films.
