Films of the 2000s: 2004 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

It's time for the 2004 movie poll.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 31st of March. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 2003 there's is still two weeks left to do it (the deadline of that poll is March 15.)

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 2004:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

1. A Very Long Engagement

I don't much like the other movies released this year, so this is it, my list.

Looks like there's very different opinions about how good year 2004 is in cinema. :) Very glad to see that animated movies are doing much better on this round (than in 2010).

Hmmm that's strange. If Crash is a 2004 movie, how come it won the best picture over Brokeback Mountain which is a 2005 movie?

It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004 so I guess technically that makes it a 2004 release. The film didn't get released everywhere else in the world until 2005.

It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004 so I guess technically that makes it a 2004 release. The film didn't get released everywhere else in the world until 2005.
Another example is The Hurt Locker that was screened at several festivals in 2008 (first in Venice and Toronto) but got its wide release in the most countries in (second half of) 2009 (looks like it was in normal distribution in Italy in 2008). Even Casablanca won the best picture of 1943 although it's a 1942 movie.
Bigger surprise for me was that Oldboy is a 2003 movie (it was in normal distribution in South Korea then) because it was competing for the Palme d'or in 2004 Cannes film festivals (and won the Grand Prix).

I want to, but I haven't been able to source a good copy of it. Plus it's the type of art-house film I'd like very much.

I haven't seen it either. I have had two opportunities to see it but both time I missed it (first time in Autumn of 2010 when they screened it in Helsinki Film Archive and the second time in Midnight Sun Film Festivals in Lapland ("Joe" was one of the guest directors and they showed most of his movies there (I watched Syndromes and Century) but there was probably some even more interesting movie at the same time with Tropical Malady so I missed it again.)

At least Greg has seen Tropical Malady and I expect to see it in his top 5 (last time it was his #3).

Here are the results. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind dominated (just like last time ). But then the results differ from 2010 poll (although 8 of last times's top 10 movies are in top 10 again). Two animated movies in top 3!
Bad Ecucation (last time #10) by Pedro Almodóvar collapsed to #75 (with only two votes and 8 points) and Napoleon Dynamite (last time #13 (but would have been in top 10 if Guy (his #1) had voted few hours earlier) was #80 with only seven points.)

Very glad that Nobody Knows and Mysterious Skin qualified. Suprised not to see House of Flying Daggers in top 10 considering how well Hero did in 2002 poll.

Rank. (rank in 2010 poll) Movie (director), points, votes, #1 votes
1. (1) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry), 470 points, 12 votes, 7 #1 votes
2. (8) The Incredibles (Brad Bird), 196 points, 10 votes, 0 #1 votes
3. (14) ハウルの動く城 [Howl's Moving Castle] (Hayao Miyazaki), 195 points, 7 votes, 2 #1 votes
4. (4) Before Sunset (Richard Linklater), 177 points, 8 votes, 0 #1 votes
5. (5) Der Untergang [Downfall] (Oliver Hirschbiegel), 174 points, 8 votes, 1 #1 vote
6. (6) Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Quentin Tarantino), 170 points, 8 votes, 1 #1 vote
7. (16) Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright), 159 points, 7 votes, 0 #1 votes
8. (3) Sideways (Alexander Payne), 155 points, 9 votes, 0 #1 votes
9. (2) 빈집 [3-Iron] (Kim Ki-duk), 143 points, 5 votes, 0 #1 votes
10. (9) Million Dollar Baby (Clint Eastwood), 123 points, 7 votes, 0 #1 votes
10. (46) Collateral (Michael Mann), 123 points, 6 votes, 1 #1 vote
12. (21) 誰も知らない [Nobody Knows] (Hirokazu Koreeda), 88 points, 5 votes, 0 #1 votes
13. (32) Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki), 85 points, 4 votes, 0 #1 votes
14. (29) Vera Drake (Mike Leigh), 73 points, 4 votes, 0 #1 votes
15. (17) สัตว์ประหลาด [Tropical Malady] (Apichatpong Weerasethakul), 70 points, 2 votes, 0 #1 votes

16. (7) Gegen die Wand (Fatih Akin), 65 points, 2 votes, 0 #1 votes
17. (80) Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow), 54 points, 2 votes, 0 #1 votes
18. (20) 十面埋伏 [House of Flying Daggers] (Zhang Yimou), 53 points, 4 votes, 0 #1 votes
