Films of the 2000s: 2003 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri » Mon Feb 15, 2016 8:01 am

It's time for the 2003 movie poll.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 15th of March. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 2002 there's is still two weeks left to do it (the deadline of that poll is Ferbruary 29.)

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 2003:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

I almost forgot my #31 film of all-time was 2003. I thought it was 2004!

1) Oldboy
2) Good Bye, Lenin!
3) Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
4) Finding Nemo
5) Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...And Spring
6) X2
7) Big Fish
8) Holes
9) The Animatrix

2001: Spirited Away (#9) and Waking Life (#91)
2002: None

According to IMDb and RYM it's a movie (it has been showed in many festivals and even in normal disribution in several countries). It's also eligible last time we had this poll (and nobody even questioned it then) and it's in the super final too (hosted by BleuPanda). So yes you can vote for it. (I will drop everything else one place.)

I will not be submitting a list, but may I recommend Thom Andersen's documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself? I find it an interesting exploration of movies' portrayal of his beloved city.

For some reason, my university's website has it on one of their library sites. I just noticed it there one day, but of course you have to be affiliated with the university to gain access.

13 of last times top 15 goes to the final. The missed ones were Barbarian Invasions at #16 (last time #7) and Love Actually that didn't gain a single point :o (last time #15). Three Korean movies in top 10 (Memories of Murder was definitely the greatest gainer (last time #82!)) but also Oldboy did much better this time. Dogville wasn't in top 5 in 2010 but now it won the poll by a quite big margin.
