Films of the Early 20th Century: Final Results

Post by BleuPanda »

It's time to count down the top 100 films of the early 20th century as voted by AMFers!

Here are details on the details:

Fans section: You are a fan if a movie ranks in your top 20 (unless you voted for less than 40, then it's your upper half)

Haters section: This consists of the bottom 10% of votes.

Actually I'm just going to show everyone's votes from highest to lowest.

Points: I have adjusted the points so that #149 gets 0. Thus, the points show how much support they got above last place, eliminating the basic points that every film got.

Here are the voters:
Antonius (33)
BleuPanda (109)
bonnielaurel (134)
Gillingham (73)
Greg (143)
Michel (109)
Miguel (71)
Petri (115)

I'll reveal the bottom 49 after a few days, much like the decade polls on the music forum.

Note that we didn't get many comments, so please feel free to discuss as we go!

Great start.
Not huge surprises yet but maybe I would have expected to see Late Spring and The Wizard of Oz a bit higher.

I kind of missed this while it was going on, but sad to see My Darling Clementine and His Girl Friday so low. They both would be in my top 10 for the period.

Sorry for getting so few posts up last night. I love how I went from being the lowest rank for one Marx Brother film to the highest for the next.

Also, as a note for how small numbers affect theses results: if I remember correct, Un chien andalou was #148 without my vote (I added my list last). So my single #5 vote caused a 70 spot jump.

Great. I always enjoy these countdowns (I don't say anything because my english is too bad but I really enjoy that).

I noticed a couple of mistakes :
"A Night at the Opera" is not my #55, I have never seen it.
"Beauty and the Beast/La Belle et la Bete" is my #90.

Whoops. 55 is your default number so I probably just accidentally listed it.

For Beauty and the Beast I'll have to check when I get home. I don't have this automated so it's hopefully an error in presentation and not the file.

Double-checked those two now that I'm home. As I thought, it was simply my writing that was off, the file had the correct information.

A lot to catch up here. Nice new profile picture BleuPanda (although I loved the last one too). :)

Marx Brothers movies at #76 and #77. Night at the Opera was my first Marx Brothers movie (I saw it quite late in late teens). I knew the name of the group but nothing more and expected maybe something like Laurel & Hardy movies. I was totally blown away. Groucho's (pseudo) intellectual exchaging words, Chico's hoaxes, Harpo's mimic performance (and then there were Zeppo too in the movie), the musical parts and especially the Harpo's and Chico's music parts. It could be that if I had seen some other Marx bros movie first it would be my favorite and I'm pretty sure if I watched them all again (I have seen the movies once) Duck Soup would be my favorite but I haven't and the Night at the Opera is the Marx Brothers movie to me.

The group of #75-#71.
There's a lot of my pet hates according to my votes (I didn't really hate any of the finalists).
73. The Immigrant (last on my list and the biggest surprise in the top 100 (it was Miguel's #1 of the early films so it was expected he will give it a lot of points though)). I have said it before but ranking those early Chaplin sort films (only one was in the final) feels like comparing The Simpsons episodes to feature films. The Immigrant was fun but I have seen better Chaplin sorts so it was easy to put it last although I really liked to watch it. I understand if someone thinks same about Keaton sort One Week (my #9) but in my papers its in a league of its own comparing to his other sorts and even to his feature length movies.
L'atalante and Vampyr are the ones I want to watch again the most on the list. I was probably too young or in wrong mood when I saw them (comparing how much I have loved Dreyer's other works or just a feeling I would like L'atalante now.)

Why so little love for Bunuel? I was also sad to see Holy Motors so low in the 2010s ranking. Not enough love for surrealism.

It was good seeing that cluster of Hitchcock films barely miss the top 100. Hitchcock tends to get a ton of films simply from having more viewers.

Some really strong films have already fallen, but that also largely has to do with the breadth of this survey. There are less important films from the pre-1950s, but the ones that actually do stand out are pretty phenomenal.

Some remarks concerning the ranks 101-120:
- I agree with BleuPanda about the Hitchcock films. Of course he made some outstanding films, but not everything he touched turned into gold. The same is true for Welles, who is even more of a critics-darling, but he doesn't do so well here (see The Lady from Shanghai).
- I didn't expect Out of the Past this low. I enjoyed the film, although I was slightly underwelmed after all the positive critiques. Still, I would have thought it would make the top 100 easily.
- I really appreciate the drawings on this version of the poster of All Quiet on the Western Front. It pack the whole movie nicely in one simple image.

#149 doesn't surprise me (maybe would have guessed The Great Train Robbery though) but there are definetely some big surprises in bottom third (The Magnificent Ambersons and The Golem in bottom 5 (didn't Greg vote for Golem?) and many more. (On the other hand there are only few movies I wouldn't have expected to enter top 50.)

Looks like Way out West could have lost if more people have seen it (or maybe not considering Sons of the Desert is in top 50 :o ).

"The Birth of a Nation" loses its status as most overrated movie of the 1910s. "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "The Adventures of Robin Hood" are surprisingly low. Not many swashbuckle fans here. :violence-duel:

The Magnificent Ambersons was definitely surprising. While I see what it does, it's hard for me to rank it alongside completed films. It's also not a narrative I find myself caring about, even if I recognize the raw technical power. The other incomplete film also placed below 100...

It is a completed film. Just not completed in the way Welles wanted ;)

I didn't care much for The Magnificent Ambersons on first viewing, but it grew a lot on second viewing. It is indeed too much a compromised movie to really be a masterpiece, but for the most part it is pretty powerful.

I really don't like seeing Sons of the Desert that high, as it exposes the issue with our usual formula with such a low voter turnout. A film shouldn't end up in the top third of the list when it has only two votes and one of those is last place.

Great results. Although there were surprises lower in the list, top 30 is filled with movies you can find in every reasonable book or list that collects together the most essential movies. Kind of wished The Fall of the House of Usher would have been in top 30 (and in the grande finale) although I was a bigger fan of #30.
Very glad to see Children of the Paradise in top 5.

I haven't voted for City Lights? My mistake. Would probably have placed 30th to 40th.

Indeed nice to see Les Enfants du Paradis in the top five.

Casablanca wins by 80 points in game in which only eight people voted :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Looks like everyone is a fan of that movie but still wow the difference in points is bigger between #1 and #2 than #148 and #50. :o ;)

Thanks BleuPanda for hosting this! :)

I feel like Casablanca is more of an entertaining and likeable film than it is a competent film, because, unlike Citizen Kane, or Bicycle Thieves, it isn't bursting with ideas and meaning in every sequence. It has more entertainment value than actual merit, I feel.

But still, thanks for hosting, BleuPanda :D , as it was a lot of fun. I would've liked to have voted, but unfortunately, I hadn't seen a lot of movies from that period when the poll was going on.

The voters were biased for films beginning with C:

5. Children of Paradise
4. Citizen Kane
3. City Lights
2. Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times
1. Casablanca

Thanks for hosting, BleuPanda. Between "Casablanca" and "Citizen Kane" I prefer the first, because CK only has one fully developed character. The two Chaplin films have different supporters; only Michel had both in his top 5.

I still think Casablanca holds up as one of the greatest films from a narrative standpoint. The dialogue is phenomenal.
